gilliam is a dick i would bash his teeth in if i ever saw him. he's just dying to suck spielberg's cock because every word out of gilliams mouth is spielberg. funny i never see the guy who created ET talking about this loser
Dude, no kidding. Emmerich contributes nothing artistically or creatively to films - he just uses proven popular ideas. And Spielberg might be the most imitated, and has directed mostly good movies, but he is seriously deficient in *great* movies to be considered "the greatest filmmaker."
Terry Gilliam is jealous of every director in Hollywood. Now he is jealous of Roland Emmerich. LOL
But I am glad he gives some props to Spielberg with the shot stuff. But Spielberg, like I said before, is the most influencial and greatest filmmaker of all time.
(continued) There were three major SF virtual reality pictures released in 98-99, and Emmerich's was the worst of the three -- The 13th Floor isn't even as good as Dark City, much less as amazing as The Matrix. Emmerich blows chunks. He IS derivative. Never had an original concept for a movie or a scene in his entire film career
@IAmTDurden If Emmerich blows chunks, why is his movies always successful? And I would never say that the 13th Floor was better than Dark City. That would be insane. Dark City is a good sci fi film. Terry Gilliam has a few good films, but he looks like a jealous prick here talking down on good filmmakers. Is he this jealous?
@ARepublicanVictory Great. One more idiot who thinks the only standard of quality in art is the amount of money it generates. If there were fewer people like you, film studios would actually take risks on better movies.
@Salguine Great. One more idiot who thinks that what a jealous director says about another financial and critically acclaimed director matters. Studios do take risks. Ever read Hollywood Babylon? Stupid airhead, shut the fuck up and get lost.
@ARepublicanVictory Jealous? Are you joking? Jealous of what? Financial Emmerich is; critically acclaimed he is most definitely not. Gilliam enjoys far greater critical esteem; most critics also see Emmerich for the hack that he is.
"Ever read 'Hollywood Babylon'." Yes, I re-read it after every viewing of one of Roland Emmerich's cietmatic triumphs.
@Salguine Originally it this started off with the lame-brain Gilliam talking down on Spielberg. He is my favorite director, not Emmerich. Now Emmerich is ok, but Spielberg is the greatest director of all time in the U.S. I do of course have a listing which has Ford, Hitchook, Chaplin, Zinneman, Kubrick, Wells, Hawks, Curtiz and Stevens.
@ARepublicanVictory I don't really think he's jealous. He is a WORKING director. What is there to be jealous of. He is merely stating his opinion. It's not even like he is announcing to his crew what an awful director Emmerich is. It's a conversation he is having with an actor.
I think that excited "oh!" wasn't because be was praising her, it was her sudden ACTUAL understanding of the word, when he finally managed to define it. "The opposite of original." Y'know, after the requisite couple minutes of him being so far up his own rectum he couldn't manage to talk to a child without being an ass. Well done, Terry!
Gilliam is right,Emmerich is an imitator but at least that's something.
But what about Marcus Nispel,John Moore or Bret Ratter?those guys are drones, soulless whores, they will make anything for a good check and hollywood is full of them.I just can't visualize them reading scripts ,they just shoot them if the price is right.
I need to stop watching these Gilliam interview sequences on YouTube. I love the man's movies, but the more I hear from HIM, the bigger and more obnoxious his ego.
I love Gilliam's films, I don't know why he feels the need to seem so insecure when it comes to directors who audiences have prove they love, like Spielberg. I wonder if Gilliam had been around in the forties, whether he would have also derided Capra or Hitchcock?
@bastardo2000 Why does it make him insecure to dislike the works of other directors? I really don't see the correlation at all. It's quite possible that someone can resent something or someone without being insecure you know.
@bastardo2000 If he does it alot I don't know why. On the other hand that doesn't matter here. Everyone knows Roland Emmerich's films are bad. They're worse than the worse Lucas/Spielberg movies.
i watched this movie when i was very depressed... after all the hateful reviews i thoght it would be a drag, but i found gilliam's message at the end to be surprisingly upbeat.
haha that's great. It's odd although python is so long ago, it seems like thy've got the same kind of humor still. I can totally imagine John Cleese saying all this.

Why the eph would Gilliam be "jealous" of other directors? He's one of the better ones out there. As for Emmerich, what PLANET are you on?

"Do you know what derivative means?"
"No."
"Why not? Get out...(mumble...)"
"Because you haven't told me yet."
Brilliant.
