hey, great documentary using it for a downfall of thatcher piece of coursework, could you tell me the original air date of the show and who it was by (bbc, itv etc)
IMHO the Poll Tax was an insult to most people's inteliigence and designed to screw as much money out of everyone as possible. To this day, I still don't know what made Thatcher think she could've got away with it?
@Paulwherrell I think a mixture of hubris and the fact that it was initially a very popular policy with the Tory party faithful (whom of course do not represent wider public opinion). Some of the principle elements of the policy were OK, but the implementation of the thing was very shoddy and the package as a whole was completely politically untenable. A grave political mistake - up there with Brown's "election that never was" and 10p Tax cock-up!
Why is charging everyone an equal share unfair? Because whingers are too comfortable in their socialist indulgences to realise that there's only so long you can redistribute the wealth of others to you. Eventually, there will be no more pie to slice.
You seem to be a very well educated fool like most of your torie heroes like Thatcher.
Sorry about the spelling and grammer I went to school in thatcher Britain so while you saved money on your taxes I had about 40 people in my class and teachers that never came in.
If you believe in the individual why dont you simply become a criminal.
Snobbery and elitism how funny you should say that when you worship the most stuck up bitch in recent history who sold our country out for a few votes from people like you who cant see how she helped create the mess we are in now.
You explain to me how lowering taxes is gonna help society as a whole long term.
You believe the aspiration of the working classes is to be given the opportunity to buy a home that was created by the state for poor people to live in forever.
Those houses are now rented to the same people by private landlords for ridiculous sums of money.
I probably am a bit cretinous mainly because I went to school in Thatcher Brittania. But unlike selfish people like you my family refused to by their council homes out of moral principal. Mainly because they were designed to help people on low income wages like me.
By the way I'm currently renting one from a landlord due to your Bitch Idol.
@doublaar What gives you some divine right to ridicule the hopes and aspirations of the millions of ordinary, working class people who did benefit from the Right to Buy Council House policy and reduced taxes on their income? Don't you believe in the rights and liberty of the individual to do with the proceeds of their own efforts as they see fit? Why do you despise aspiration?
Your snobbery and elitism is exposed with cretinous comments like "I always thought she was a bitch".
@UnitedBritannia My friend, the truth is people never really saw that. To many the capitalism that Tathcherism so greatly aspired to, didnt help the people, it served on false aspirations that everyone would be better. In the end the poor got poorer and the wealthy with tax cuts got wealthier. And when that wealth went down, deregulation allowed them to cut the working classes wages and fire them to get back the money they lost, that is why today the middle class is dwindeling.
@UnitedBritannia The right to be scheme was a double sided coin in my opinion (and please, feel free to disagree with me if you like) yes it did give ordinary working class council tenants the opportunity to buy their own homes, however, we all know that thatchers main aim was almost complete privitisation (straying away from the original ideals of the beveridge report in 1942) What she wanted, was for business owners to get their grubby mits on these houses, and be able to charge MORE.
It annoyed Thatcher that local councils continually voted Labour or Liberal. The poll tax was designed to discredit local councils -Thatcher thought they spent too much on schools, housing, services, roads.
She also ruthlessly represented the rich. "She wanted to alleviate the burden on home owners". FFS How about alleviating the burden of pensioners & the poor?
The legacy of Thatcher is Anti-social behaviour. Drugs (she slashed Customs jobs) and a fuck you attitude.
There's been worse ideas than poll tax

Mrs Thatcher thought the system was unfair and unconservative. So they come up with a system that was even less fair, but conservative as all hell.

Yeah but as I seem to recall Patten was quite in favour of the poll tax. Once he implemented it he realised what a disaster it was!
