Is this the same airport that that IL-76 (a.k.a. the Vodka-burner) almost ran out of runway at? I LMAO every time I see that video. I love the tower controllers' commentary! Gotta love Aussie humor!!!
@busman0204 well the background convo's should have being nil if not very minimal as it was only supposed to be me and a mate up there, not 6-8 of us..... Also I had camera at extreme zoom in hence why very shaky plus windy day as well as my shaking hands from the excitement of the day. got a heap of photos on facebook from before this vid :)
@336kgf if its what im thinking im looking at, its actually an airport operations vehicle. i do have a photo from when this big guy waiting to get on runway and a little cessna taking off....
@cintish yeah i know. was only supposed to be 2 of us on the tower balcony but 3-4 other people followed it, grrrrr. this was first visit to Alice by the C5M
On it's way back to Richmond and then pago / Hickam, Travis. I did that mission 3 times during my career. We have somekind of listening post at Alice Springs. I remember what we hauled---it was like water filtration equipment.
My Dad was stationed at Pine Gap in the 1970's and we would occasionally go out to the airport to visit with the air crews on their weekly visits. Those days they were flying mostly C-141's on that route, though I had heard they had flown a C-5 into Alice even back then. I'm curious if these days they fly the fives in regularly or is it mostly C-17's or both? Cool vid. Thanks!
yeah i remember bout 8 years ago i think we still had the c-141's coming in, dec 2008, which was when this vid was taken, we had this new C5M come to alice for hot weather testing. and mid last year we had exact same C5M come back as normal. The plane that comes in every week now for Pine Gap is the C17 though most of 2008 and jan-feb 2009 we had the KC10 come in but not any more, just the C17 now. saw her take off today, never get tired of it.
@proudalice I flew on a C141 when my dad was stationed south of you in Woomera. Now THAT was an adventure. From California to Woomera=somewhere around a week. We got stuck in NZ for a few days because the landing gear had problems.
@proudalice My dad was stationed at Woomera in the late 70s. We never saw a C-5 come through, only C-141s. Looking back at it now, it's disappointing.
30 second take off... He must have have been very heavy. A lightly loaded C5M can do a 20 second take off when the wheel start rolling. Plus they did a Static Run up, yeah.. he was heavy. Prolly about 800,000pounds +/- a few tons.
she was fully loaded with fuel but very light on cargo, prob a 1000 pounds if that, i got photos of inside of cargo hold with cargo, no higher then foot and a half if that and they were going to do a rolling start, but as you can see they didnt
I've been to Alice. I didn't realize there was that big of a runway there. Then again, I was only 10 when I was at the place. It's all a blur. Don't sweat the swearing, mate. It's all good.
yeah alice runway isnt all that big, he was lightly loaded, 35 crew roughly and less then 1000 pounds of gear id say. we can handle 747 ops just not fully laden otherwise they run into the dirt.... Alice Airport is actually the biggest airport in australia by means of landmass/land area.
Its still pretty darn loud but the Super Galaxy doesn't have the whine that you typically hear from the older model C-5's. I still can't fathom 200,000 total pounds of thrust from those engines....
i got inside the C5 in vid but only APU was running.... check out my other c5 vids, even up in control tower still was bloody loud and still got hit with jet blast
Was this a re-engined C-5? It's not as loud as I'm used to hearing. These perform touch and goes here routinely and you can always tell it's a C-5 from how loud it is.
I did not think the Alice had a solid enough runway to handle that mighty beast

He did alot better than the "vodka burner".

Look at that wing droop. Must be a long flight ahead.
ViperFace 8 months ago
@ViperFace sure was. Going from Alice Springs to Osaka Japan. They only had minimal cargo inside the hold as it was a test evaluation flight.
proudalice 7 months ago
@proudalice Wow, that's one hell of a stretch for the C-5. I see the -M variant has significantly increased range.
ViperFace 7 months ago
@ViperFace Its too bad the engines dont sound the same on the M variant as the older ones. Ill miss that sound when they are all gone.

The small plane waiting to taxi at 1:18 looks like a freaking toy when the C5 rolls by.

its split evenly pretty much, the 17s are newer so they see a tiny bit more action

I can say as an American, I have been to Alice Springs. I didn't get the chance to crawl up Ayers Rock. I was a kid and afraid of heights.

yeah, i like the sound of a C5, nice and loud

I used to live right by a c-5 base.
Loud isn't so nice that close.
Then again, its better than the sound INSIDE them.
GAAAAAAWD.

I meant to say I lived ON a military base, near the flight line.

lucky you. i would love to get on a C5 for a flight, bit hard for me though, i a baggage handler for qantas....

It messed me up as far as relative size.
I look at other planes and I just don't feel safe in them anymore.
They look so small and easily moved by wind now.

yeah its the newest model C5, engines rated at 50,000lbs. it was very loud, videos dont quite convey it. it was in alice for hot weather testing.
