This is amazing, nice to see some digital footage with subtle tone, and something that doesn't feel hyper real. Tell's you a lot how much computer nerds know about creating cinematic imagery if they don't know how impressive this is.
to anyone who thinks this doesn't look impressive, or that it even looks bad, i can guarantee you, this is awesome.
with a normal camera, you'd get all those small lights way too exposured and covering much of the frame, or you'd have the people be completely black due to the focus on the light.
it's not impressively looking, but just think of how precise and beautiful you can make color correction.
Amazing footage. The dynamic range is Huge. Highlights are perfectly exposed and also shadows. This is something I never have seen. This is footage for those who Know obviously. I think this is something that we all dreamed before but could do it only after hard post.
Not sure what the point of posting this on Youtube - which handles HD appallingly badly. Should be posted on Vimeo (and it still would be missing a lot of information since the Red EPIC 5K shoots in ... 5K). That said, to all those losers who think this isn't special: ever wondered what this scene would like like in almost any other digital camera, including high end (non-65mm) cameras? The brightness of the neon lights above would almost completely wash out the darker crowd and surface colors!
@wpromo Thats the point!!!!!! The flatter the better. The flater the gamma curve is the more information is captured. Then you add contrast in post. Thats how cinematic movies are made.
Looks nice, the trouble with these videos is that we can't appreciate the image quality of a camera whose image is massively scaled down to fit a low-detail window. Presenters should try the opposite... post a small portion of video scaled-up so that the target video has more than twice the DPI of the original footage.
RED EPIC 006 camera was STOLEN from Mark Pederson's chalet in France. It is the only one in the world outside of RED. Its likely the thieves don't know what they have and how useless it is to them. Every image shot is logged that it was shot from that camera. Everyone who knows about RED will know this and they so far unreleased.
Keep ur ears and eyes open. If you hear anything contact the police or RED directly.
@culturebloc 100k Reward is what I just read for the return and arrest/conviction of those responsible....wonder if Dog the Bounty Hunter is interested.
@culturebloc Those thieves are absolutely stupid! There's a million to one chance they'll get away with it! Does anyone know how much the EPIC will cost when it's released?
@mikeyw02 Pay attention to NAB on the 11th or look at Reduser. A lot of information is due to be released. There has been some hold ups as with pretty much every other technical firm due to the Japanese crisis. Although the EPIC is built in the US some very minor but very important elements are made in Japan.
@frezeoboy I believe this camera (epic) is around 30,000 dollars (at least somewhere around that). That's not including lenses and all the other needbe's you need to go with it. If you're on a budget (me too, I can NEVER afford a camera with an end cost of 50k) you should wait for the red one SCARLET. It's supposed to be under 3000 with almost everything included (lenses and what-have-nots)
@HabeKeinMitleid: Well, how does it, the Red Epic, compare to a Canon Mark II 5D Camera? They are running for 2,500 dollars, on average, with 2 hours plus running-time, per memory card.
@HabeKeinMitleid: Thanks for answering. The Canon Mark II 5D has some impressive visuals. It is broadcast quality, and looks like film. Many video production companies, film students, and pro-commercial makers, and using these cameras. Canon is suppose to be releasing the Canon Mark III 5D by July of 2011. It is said to be great, but so far, there are only rumors. I have seen visuals from said cameras that are as good as MTV quality music videos. I have not seen it A/B'd against Red Cam, though.
@Swagaization The MarkII is a fantastic camera, and like you said is great for starting out and then some, but for those who are really serious about film and quality, then you cant campare a markII with a red. The red scarlett will probably be the next choice for enthusiast because of its price. It would be like having the chance to own a hasselblad for the price of a canon 1d. So totally worth the expense.
@ktayor1: Thank you for the tip. As I said, I never saw anyone A/B them...or give any other technical comparison...other than when I came across an online posting that stated the two cameras were comparable. Clearly, the listing price says it all--that, and the tremendous use of the Red Cam in professional film productions.
Thank you once again, for your help!!! Happy Holidays, my friend!!!!
@temsi: I have since learned about the pixelation differences, but I did not know about the recording limits of the 5D. The 5D and 7D were used, in part, to film "Black Swan" and both looked impressive. If shown in a theater, I'd have to A/B them to compare with other cameras. I, however, have noticed the high-noise issues with 5Ds & 7Ds. While in an editing suite, I saw Red Cam footage...shot with a nice lens; it was mind-blowing! I hear that the RED Epic has zero rendering time? Is that true?
Social Network was shot on RED One MX. Upcoming Pirates 4 too, in 3D. It's clean stuff.
In Black Swan, the only 7D shots were the ones on the subway, where it allowed a more cramped style of shooting and didn't require a huge production around the camera. But they suffer from jello and high light issues that kinda make them stand out from the rest of the film, which was shot on 16mm film.
@temsi: Yes, I have heard about the shutter issue, although I didn't know it....under that name, "moire". An editor I know...often complains about it. The rest I'll look-up. Thank you again for your guidance!!! This is very enlightening.

@Swagaization 5D Mk2 craps out at 12 minutes worth of recording.
That's the maximum length of a take, at which point the camera simply stops.
It is in no way comparable to an Epic.
Epic shoots 16 bit 5K RAW that measures a full 4K.
5D shoots moire'd 1080p into 8-bit 4:2:0 H264 that measures around 1.2K at best.
One is a professional movie making tool, the other is a professional stills camera with a video mode
Comparing a 5Dmk2 to a RED Epic, is like comparing a DV camera to a Sony F35.

Moire is Canon's biggest drawback, next to jello.

"moire" : watch ? v = IrLQ4n85seE
"jello" a.k.a. "skew" a.k.a. "rolling shutter effect":
watch ? v = UEaDrS-yzIE
and
watch ? v = 0qC0_nIUq9s
also, google is your friend
