I may be taking a stab here and stepping outside my area of expertise but I believe what makes these so good is that most of the actors are stage actors. thus they need presence to be good and have learnt it via actual acting not just from sitcoms and movies. For one to act on stage I think it requires far more skill than prerecorded movie,

@GameMusicCompiIation You know what the main problem is? it's like Blackadder I. When they are let loose on sets a locations they lose all direction and focus. If they were on one or two sets in the studio (like blackadder II, III and forth), they focus more on the characters and the dialog and thus have made a better special.
