Out of all their great albums, this one is my sentimental favorite. It played as I readied myself for college each morning. Such high vibration. No wonder my mind wandered at school. I had this stuff, Fragile/CTTE, Foxtrot and Selling England by the Pound bouncing around in there. As the decades fly by, this early 70's prog only grows in stature.
GG were years ahead oftheir time and when I fist heard them I was blown away. Octopus was, sorry, IS a classic Album. Saw them live at Leeds Uni in the 70s. I went back and bought old material and it was just as good. Fresh, innovative and the guys are still involved in the business - Would love to see them again!
@davidhwalton this is their ''simplest'' album too in many ways, or a little more, say, diluted (unless you count 'The Missing Piece' onwards, which to be honest were a different band) - check out the albums 'Free Hand' , 'Octopus' and 'In a Glass House' ; true musical masterpieces. Welcome to the glorious world of GG.

nothing like this has come out before or since...sometimes gentle giant makes me sad because there will never be anything like them ever again...but then i put on "octopus" and feel better again
And don't forget, Gary Green, Malcolm Mortimer, and Kerry Minnear--Three Friends (the band)--are coming back to America soon. Go see them when they're in your town.
I saw G.G. in the mid seventies with Yes, I love Yes but they outshined them, by a good margin, at least at this particular show. Frampton and Gary Wright were also at this show.
well,i don't hear neither mahavishnu nor king crimson in this music, but GG are the most original band i have ever heard, too bad they , had only 10 years of active performance, thanks for posting, great album!
the first gentle giant song i ever heard --age 15 or so. Bought 3 friends on a lark. Had no idea what I was in for. My first thoughts: an odd combo of Zappa, T. Monk, and Yes --but of course, as we all know, they are true originals and one makes comparisons in vain! Vivas los Gigantes!
I saw "the three friends" last night in Gothenburg, Sweden. it was truly awsome. They had the singer from 10cc and a whole lot of great preformers! It's a shame that the schulman brothers couldnt make it.
They have partly reformed with 3 members from this era (Minnear, Green, Mortimore) and are performing as "Three Friends" with a vocalist plus 1 other musician and doing Gentle Giant material.
O som que é produzido pelo Gentle Giant é inconfundivel, sem similar na cena rock progressivo. São geniais, gostaria de saber se esta banda ainda esta na ativa ou não?
Start...middle...finish. Superb!!! I've listened to many a song over the years and this truly is perfection.

I am new to Gentle Giant, but this is some good stuff..Reminds me of Yes a bit, but even more going on than in a Yes song. Wow.

This album is a classic. It's simply amazing, and I love the band!
A quick question, though. Was this transferred from a Cassette or an LP?
The fidelity is relatively low, and the playback speed is s little too fast. No offense at all, but I'm curious.

Free Hand as an album goes to the same level as such "giants" as
Yes: Going for the one
RUSH: 2112 (& Hemispheres)
really, really progressive!

@winstonac9 Rush? Are you joking? Going for the One? Pure garbage.

something about this song reminds me of the mahavishnu orchestra ''birds of fire song'' or a king crimson song i cant remember which it resembles.

This was the opening act when I saw GG for the first time in Montreal in the early 1970s. The live performence was identical to that of the studio.

@Characters1984 has there been a rift between the brothers and the others? (unintentional rhyme, there:)
a shame Giant music will be performed without what I've always felt was the signature element: Derek's powerful voice
