This helped me alot with more of an understanding of the poem itself, I got bits and pieces of it but its always good to get more input and ideas of this poem Thank you so much :) <3
i like your thoughts on it pretty much the same as mine, i really identify with prufrock and i like stuff we used to learn about in school about ten years ago too :D
being your own enemy sux hard ^^ good job mate cheers!
Don't take em' down!!! Your videos are amazing!! I'm in modern lit. now and it's a relief to hear others read and comment. I love your insight and your accent and you're sincere enough not to make yourself sound stuffy or didactic so it really works for me.
Well I'm glad you decided to eat the peach and not take down your videos. I recall reading T.S Elliot's poetry back during my undergrad but I don't throughly remember his poems in detail. You gave me reason to go back and re-read his poems and remind myself why he is such a wonderful American poet. Thank you!
wow. i cant tell you how much this made my day. i have "do i dare disturb the universe?" tattooed on my inner arm. this is by far my all time favorite poem and you put into words exactly how i felt about it when i first cam across it as well. i guess literature really is universal.
I've read this poem only recently and loved it :) However, as I'm not a native speaker, I had problems understanding the meaning of some of the verses etc and your interpretation really helped me! :) So thank you :)

dude i love this , you mentioned when prufrock debates whether he should talk of the men smoking pipe or of being a crab and if you identify with this characters psyche you may think that these things are so random and also so interesting and are great ways to presume or begin a conversation with these women, that section was great for me.
Thank you so much for your interpretation! I was really struggling to understand this piece & you have brought a lot of clarity to my mind. Please keep doing these videos! Do you take requests? Haha! It is so cool to have someone actually being helpful on Youtube, instead of people just making videos of themselves for the heck of it.
Very interesting to hear your thoughts on one of my favourite poems. I think that you should definitely keep putting these videos out. Help make youtube a place of enlightenment not flamewars. Also, please do the Hollowmen! Would be fascinating to hear what you take from it.
I never comment on videos, but this was fantastic. I'm doing a literature degree & have chosen to write about Prufrock (it's absolutely my favourite poem), so stumbled upon this when looking for Eliot's reading. Never take down your videos! I so wish I actually knew you now, so we could chat about the poem in more detail over a cup of tea! But yes, v interesting thoughts to come out of that - I'm subscribing...
This has been fabulous. Prufrock is a brilliant poem. Got an exam on modernist poetry on Monday and am throwing myself into Prufrock today in a big old revision effort. Would be great to have the opportunity to talk with u in greater depth about poetry, I enjoy your interpretations. x
Thought this was great! I'm way past the teenage angst stage being a mature age student, but I can still relate to this issues you are talking about. In the midst of serious study headache, I really enjoyed your thoughts.
Yet Prufrock does not make an attempt to communicate ("And would it have been worth it") because of his insecurities and his anticipation of failure so he "drowns". I guess I am suggesting that unlike Prufrock the reason you got over that phase might be because you made an attempt at communication. Perhaps, you realized that language is not your worst enemy. On another note, I also really enjoy sharing thoughts on poetry so I am very glad I came across this video.
What I found most interesting about your interpretation is how you related the last line of the poem "Till human voices wake us and we drown" to Prufrock's inability to communicate and connect with others ("It is impossible to say just what I mean!"). As you say "language will kill you because it will be misunderstood and misinterpreted".
Thank you enormously for this. It was not only informative but also highly entertaining. I cannot say how glad I am you didn't take these videos down. They are incredibly enlightening. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and I look forward to your next videos.
Though many consider THE WASTE LAND as Eliot's masterpiece, I relate better to PRUFROCK for some reason. I perfectly agree with you; the sense of disconnection and alienation that Eliot evokes in the poem is something that pretty much sums up the modern condition. Your commentary is very useful to me as I am going through a Prufrockian phase right now. Thank you very much!
Your an excellent speaker, dont think for a second what your doing is not interesting or watchable. i would have tuned in for 30 min. The accent helps out alot to, its makes you sound sincere and like an intellectual. i need to get me one! haha j/k
Good commentary!!! I love the poem too. Read it first when I was 18 now I'm 36. I'm a woman aswell, and I love Michelangelo too, though I don't talk about him particularly. I think he's a symbol in the poem of the beauty and artistic achievement of the Italian Renaissance!
Good commentary! Love the poem. It's the first poem that really spoke to me and stuck with me and went under my skin. I'm not sure I'll ever grow out of it!! But it doesn't worry me! I read it when I was about 18. I'm now 36. Great explanation about the obscene mess yet sweet taste of eating a peach! Great example of the base connotations of eating a banana indeed!
To me though, cause I love Michelangelo, I feel that J Alfred Prufrock loves Michelangelo too.
He is not a happy person; he never really is. He spends much of his life, trying to reach a higher being, a higher position, to feel the closer presence of God.
I think, that that is why his poems relate so much to persons when they are depressed, narcissistic, or just lonely.
I studied the several trends of American poetry for a project last year, and I read an essay stating that much of T. S. Eliot's poetry is related to by the adolescent because his poems are about a contradictory character, a man who wants to be one way, but doesn't understand how, a man who feels isolated in both a superior and inferior way simultaneously.
It seems almost insulting, but if you study Eliot's writing closely, it seems to reflect his inner turmoil he's faced his entire life.
he has aspirations to being superior to who he is (hence his fascist sympathies) on a spiritual level, yet also inferior on a human level("...mermaids singing, each to each /I do not think they will sing to me")...this isolates him on both fronts, leaving him both lonely and spiritually devoid. He lacks both bravery and intimacy.
