So capitalism, a society based on the self interest of certain individuals is a good thing? I have to disagree with that. You are aware the government protects capitalism, so what you are criticising is essentially what you are in favour of, so your argument is void.

@kellybear53 Another point is that government programs don't work. So however much someone thinks that socialism helps people. It really just ends up wasting money on bureaucracy more then it ends up helping people. Look up mutual aid societies. They provided well fare unemployment and medical care to people privately before the government regulated them out of existence. They also cut out about half of the medical schools that existed at the time, even shut down entire hospitals.

@ttaaddoo111 That is the initial intention. But what is the result? Utopias do not exist. Every communist experiment has ended in totalitarianism. Think of all of the people who starved under it. Capitalism gets blamed but the government is already involved. Its not capitalism we live under its socialism. Before welfare we had mutual aid societies that provided healthcare as well as social welfare. The government took over and phased it out.

I know what Hong Kong was. I was alive when it was still under British rule. It's now under Chinese rule as was agreed upon a long long time ago. It was not apart of China until 1997. After that the Chinese kind of kept it separate economically, but it is under Chinese jurisdiction.
If Taiwan rejoined China you could not count on what happened in Hong Kong. China feels differently about Taiwan. They don't recognize Taiwan as separate.

Some have called it the best example of free market capitalism in the world. But like I said I am not completely familiar with the whole story. But if true I think that after seeing how successful Hong Kong is with the free market it will likely be emulated to some degree by China.

Both Adam Smith and Milton Frieman warned us against the rich and government working together against the interest of regular consumer and the free market, and that's what's happening right now.

Merchants have existed for thousands of years, sure! but the cycle of non-royal people owning industrial property, hiring workers who suffer neither risk nor reward based on performance, earning a profit, and then reinvesting that profit back into the business--that process is very new.

But those societies which moved closer to capitalism were usually better because of it. Of course it wasnt until the industrial revolution when society moved far closer to capitalism.

I had an extensive debate about monopolies where I was trying to say the government is needed to prevent monopolies. By the end of the debate I realized I could not come up with one example of a monopoly where the government was not involved to some degree. In fact I would go as far to say that communism is basically a government monopoly when you think about it.

Capitalism was able to support 5million poor Europeans coming to the US, and raise them into the middle class. Capitalism also stopped the US from having massive famines, war and rebellion. I was reading an article about Bangladesh textile industry using child labor&paying way below minimum wage and police committing violence to break up the protest. The government worked in favor of textile company, and not the people because they didn't want to lose profit.

It really just ends up wasting money on bureaucracy more then it ends up helping people. Look up mutual aid societies. They provided well fare unemployment and medical care to people privately before the government regulated them out of existence. They also cut out about half of the medical schools that existed at the time, even shut down entire hospitals.

I know what Hong Kong was. I was alive when it was still under British rule. It's now under Chinese rule as was agreed upon a long long time ago. It was not apart of China until 1997. After that the Chinese kind of kept it separate economically, but it is under Chinese jurisdiction.
If Taiwan rejoined China you could not count on what happened in Hong Kong. China feels differently about Taiwan. They don't recognize Taiwan as separate.

Some have called it the best example of free market capitalism in the world. But like I said I am not completely familiar with the whole story. But if true I think that after seeing how successful Hong Kong is with the free market it will likely be emulated to some degree by China.

Merchants have existed for thousands of years, sure! but the cycle of non-royal people owning industrial property, hiring workers who suffer neither risk nor reward based on performance, earning a profit, and then reinvesting that profit back into the business--that process is very new.
I'm sorry, I don't agree that this is an age-old struggle.

But those societies which moved closer to capitalism were usually better because of it. Of course it wasnt until the industrial revolution when society moved far closer to capitalism.

I had an extensive debate about monopolies where I was trying to say the government is needed to prevent monopolies. By the end of the debate I realized I could not come up with one example of a monopoly where the government was not involved to some degree. In fact I would go as far to say that communism is basically a government monopoly when you think about it.

What factory work? The US barely manafactures anything anymore. Apple & Nike for example, two of Americas most iconic brands, don't have a single factory in the US. I think you are thinking about making a profit the wrong way. If the product benefits the people they will buy it which will give the company profit. Capitalism was able to support 5million poor Europeans coming to the US, and raise them into the middle class. Capitalism also stopped the US from having massive famines, war and rebellion. I was reading an article about Bangladesh textile industry using child labor&paying way below minimum wage and police committing violence to break up the protest. The government worked in favor of textile company, and not the people because they didn't want to lose profit.
