  • At this point, I'm so afraid of losing it all. I don't know whether to cut it or let it go. When I pull my hair back, despite a little teasing, it shows my scalp. I usually wear my hair in a side braid and incorporate a pretty scarf in a long braid This makes my braid look like a normal braid. I shouldn't be so sensitive about this. There are so many people who are far worse than my condition, but it does worry me. My hair is everywhere & I treat it like precious gold! lol I really admire you!!!

  • @Truckstopbetty Visit/join a website called AlopeciaWorld. (YouTube won't let me post the ending of the website address, but it's the usual.) It's a wonderful online community for people with alopecia areata and other forms of hair loss. Lots of great people, videos, blogs, photos. Tons of support from women going through just what you are.

  • You are a real dear to respond to my comment. I have been recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism and I have enormous stress! My hair is actually past my waist in length and I've been losing my hair like crazy!!! Pictures from Christmas a yr ago show the difference that were shocking to me. I don't have actual bald spots, but thinning is all over. I almost lost my hair when I went thru chemo/radiation in 2004, cut it collar length & I've been growing it ever since. .

  • Thank you for sharing this video. I think you are just gorgeous! The scarves are lovely, as well. I haven't thought about wearing scarves like this and it's surely an alternative to balding or thinning hair. So many other women are going to benefit from watching your courageous video. Keep on getting out just as you are... you are beautiful!!!

  • @Truckstopbetty Thanks for your wonderful comments! Since making this video in 2008, I've completely adjusted to going out in public bald. It's just the way I am, and life is too short to be bothered by it. I think that if more women with hair loss just did the same, bald women would become less of an "oddity" and we'd have more freedom to be who we are. It worked for bald men, who are now considered sexy.

  • your much more beautiful without your wig! you've got a gorgeous head and face!

  • Thanks for posting. You are beautiful!

  • you are gorgeous

i wish i was as brave as you are

  • Grazie Mary!

    Daniele

  • You are amazing! I don't know what i'd do if I lost my hair. but knowing that theres people like you out these gives a girl hope if this was ever to happen <3

  • @Bunnylikescandy Thanks!

  • I love the scarves you are showing. Thanks for sharing how to wear them. I am not having much luck finding them online. Would it be possible for you to share the site that you found yours? thanks

  • Thank you so much for posting this video. You have made my day,I'm going on-line right now to find those scarves. xx

  • Mary - I'm going to be going through chemo and your video makes me feel so much better about losing my hair. Can I ask you where you get your scarves. I've tried googling Turkish Scarves and not having much luck. Thanks! - Elaine

  • I love your video! I'm going to be going through chemo and your video made me feel so much better about losing my hair. I'm really getting excited about wearing scarves. Do mind telling me where, online, you are buying your scarves. I'm not having much luck with googling Turkish Scarves.

  • Oh my gosh :( im very sad of the illness u have. :( but why u dare to walk out of the door with nothing on yr head? anyway, *wish u to grow hair faster* :)

  • I enjoyed this video. You are beautiful with or without the `hair' or scarf. I do notice that carrying off a feminine look would require the woman to wear attractive make-up and/or accessories (well that's what I think). And I think a great attitude about self and life will also shine through. Would you say that?

  • @andieph Thank you very much - I'm glad you enjoyed it. Since making this video almost two years ago, I've given up totally on trying to wear a wig...they're just too hot for me. Yes, I'm wearing more eye makeup now (tattoos) and always feel better in earrings. It helps me feel better. I think you're right, attitude is a big part of it, and accepting who we are.

  • thank you for this video; I'm going through chemo, and this has made me feel much better. You are beautiful bald, and the scarves are a lovely way to have an alternative.

    again, thank you.

    A.

  • @adiegrey Thank you. I'm so glad you like the video. Best wishes on your treatment. Last year, I gave away the wig shown in this video to a dear friend who was undergoing chemo. She wore it for a year and now she's doing great. Because I get asked all the time what kind of cancer I have, I've come to feel a special kinship with women who do have cancer...if that makes sense. Mary

  • I much prefer baldness to wigs. so beautiful

  • I love your bald look

  • I have alopecia as well... I am looking into getting a wig. I am not brave enought to go out without "covering up"

  • wonderful, Mary....as others have said what really shines through is your joy and your attitude...i have had hair loss for 45 years! acceptance is my goal but it's still seems so elusive some days...love the scarf idea and your tutorial is absolutely perfect for explaining it. you're right, too, more bald women in public would reduce the "weirdness" factor ..how courageous you are to start the trend! thanks again.

  • Thanks!

  • Thank you for your kind words.

If you haven't seen my videos about the holiday I started last year, please watch "Announcing the National Bald Out!".

    Mary

  • I've had alopecia areata on and off since I was in kinder garden, but I've never lost ALL of my hair before and I admire you. I had about a 5 year period where all of my hair grew back, but it's recently started falling out again.

I've probably lost about 65-70 percent of my hair. Some of it is coming back, some of it is still slowly falling out. But I'm able to hide it with this product called ShaBo... which is scalp make up that makes ur scalp less noticable

  • Thanks for the Video. I have also lost ninety percent of my hair due to Alopecia. Iv brough wigs but boy do they itch.

I have found the scarves are much better, and have got lots of ways to tie them. I will look up the Turkish Oya Scarves.

My policy is, look at the money Im saving in Shampoos and Conditioners.

I still have a little hair, but shave it off, it feels so much nicer not having straggy hair.

  • Glad you like it! Since making this video in August 2008 (when I'd been bald for only 8 months), I've gotten to the point that I ONLY wear a scarf or hat when I'm chilly, or need sun protection. This bald look has simply become who I am.

  • Thanks for the video,I'm a fifteen your old girl who recently found out i have alopecia areta,my condition is getting worse and worse. I really admire you and think your gorgeous no matter what you have on your head.

  • That scarf sure looks beautiful on you. I'm looking on line for a video to send a friend of mine who is losing her hair due chemo. In the video, it says 31-33" works best. Is that 31" x 33"? Also, would you mind saying where you get your scarves? I can't find any on line that size. Thank you so much.

  • Thanks! What I meant to say is that the scarf size that works for me is square - i.e., the same measurement on all sides, and that anywhere from 31" on each side, to 33" on each side seems best. The woman I bought these scarves from online seems to have moved....I can't contact her anymore. You can find scarves like these on eBay - search for "Turkish oya scarves". Good luck! Many of them are too large for me, so just be sure to ask what they measure.

  • this woman has a fantastic attitude. no one should care that she or anyone else is bald.

  • I decided to start going around without a wig as of next school year to avoid completely scaring my classmates. i consulted my gran and was told to rather keep it on.i'm 16 and i feel so demotivated.

  • you do whatever you want and don't listen to anyone. your gran probably didn't realize the effect that she was having on you so don't beat yourself up over it.

  • you are pretty with the wig.

  • Thanks very much...I just wish I could tolerate wigs! I really tried to wear them for about a year, but they were always too hot for me. If they work for you, I'm happy for you.

  • Mary, your such a great person! You are a great role model to other people surrounding you! Yo have such a great heart and you are confident and courageous! Thanks for sharing! By the way, your beautiful inside and out!

  • Thank you.

  • Just keep on smiling!

  • I love the look but i don't think my employers would like the idea of me wearing one of those... i just brave it and go out bald.

  • Thanks! Since making this video, I now go out bald all the time - check out my "Announcing the National Bald Out!" video if you haven't seen it. Mary

  • your absoultely gorgeous.

I suffer from Alopecia Universall, and i have learnt if you believe that your hair will grow back, you will achieve it, Good Luck.

  • i have your kind of alopecia too.

  • Mary, you are one courageous and beautiful woman.

    Thank you for sharing.

  • Thanks so much! I am so tired of wigs but haven't got as courgeous as you (partly due to my young daughter) to go out bald. I didn't know any alternative. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. I'm crying watching this because its so liberating.

  • You are so beautiful, inside and out! Thank you for your courage, your good heart and you down to earth common sense. I love you!

  • Very interesting -- in Iraq, the crossover is placed on the side of the head instead of the back. Your method is definitely more symmetrical. By the way, please try not to lament the loss of your hair too much; you look very pretty regardless.

  • wow :) i really like this :) u re pretty both ways :)

  • oh wow you u look good! thank you for the scarf tips, they were soo helpful. :)

  • Thank you!

  • Wow i love the turkish scarf on you! Looks beautiful. I wear scarves all the time so thanks for giving me a new way to wear them!

  • You look beautiful bald "-) Thanx for sharing

  • Thank you xo

  • Thank you so much for sharing your "expert" experience. My 14-yr-old dau just started w the diagnosis and is v anxious, understandable. This will help me cope and help me help her.

....I hope for the best and prepare for the worst. God bless--ic

  • Great video, many thanks for this, I was just thinking what to do in summer, instead of using the wig... eh, yes, I have joined the wonderful world of the alopecia areata. I am happy to see people like you coping like this... it cheers me up. Thanks!

  • A Very courageous woman are you are still a beautiful woman without the hair!,

  • Mary, you are a wonderful example & woman! So glad to have made your acquaintance in Winslow. All the best,

    Val

  • Mary, you are an incredible example & woman! So glad to have made your acquaintance in Winslow. All the best,

    Val

  • your such an inspiration, iam a 16 year old boy and iam startin to thin around my hairline, i really hate it and i feel less of a person , i really want to like wear a wig or something to build my confidence but iam scared of what might happen, i feel gulity and selfish though what should i do please help me, and i loved you in sheer ginius that must of been AWSOME!!!

  • Have you ever tryed full lace wigs? I believe it gis you a completely 24 hour hair back.

  • Thanks for the suggestion! I haven't tried full lace wigs and will check them out. How are they as far as warmth? My main problem with wigs is how they keep heat into your scalp and make you feel too warm.

  • Welll I live in Costa Rica so we have these tropic hot and humid weather, and I could say I can pretty much handle it, It is pretty much like having your own hair back and if you get hot you just wear a high pony tail! Cause with regular wigs you just can't Maybe you have became a bit to used of no having hair ah? Hope you have give it a try they can be expensive but for me they are worth it. just try to find out on different websites and if you have the chance try them before buying

    Love Grace

  • Wonderful Mary!!! And I couldn't agree more. Once people get over the initial shock of it, they begin to accept it and then no longer even notice it as strange. I lost my hair at 11 and wore wigs for 19 (pretty miserable years). I've been The Bald Chick for 10 years now and love it! You look beautiful! It's really an unexpected beauty...that I think makes it even more profound!

Have a bright and blessed lifetime!

    Keep Shining!

  • Thanks, Laura! You're such a role model for all of us bald gals! Keep up your wonderful work.

I will keep shining (but now use a product on my head to reduce THAT particular kind of shine.) (;-)

  • Thanks, Georgia! I look forward to seeing your film.

    All the best,

  • Hi Mary

You have a very positive attitude.

    David

  • Mary, I'm so proud of you. You are very courageous to share such a creative and comfortable solution to wearing a wig or proposing to go bald. Whether you choose to wear the Turkish scarf, a wig or go bald, you have demonstrated both inner and outer beauty. You have shown that hair or no hair, you are beautiful because you have been created in God's image. May you go from strength to strengh.

    Judy

  • i actually thought it was something to do with regrowing the hair back. Disappointing.

  • how can you say such a thing....

  • You're amazing!

  • Hey there, Mary. Well done video. You're a terrific spokesperson! You go, girl!

  • When you make a broad statement like "instead of enduring the discomfort of a wig" it's very frustrating for people llike me who wear wigs and know how comfortable and beautiful they are.

Not everyone is blessed with a beautiful face like yours that looks good without hair.

I've been wearing wigs full time for 5 yrs, some have been uncomfortable b/c they didn't fit right, but most look great and I feel good about myself again.

  • If you find wigs comfortable and they're working for you, that's wonderful. It's an individual choice. I agree that the most important thing is feeling good about yourself! I just want to encourage women to consider this as an option.

I'd be happy to find a wig as comfortable as going bald or wearing a scarf, but haven't. I said "enduring the discomfort" b/c that's my experience, and what I've heard from other women. Your experience is obviously different and I appreciate your comment.

  • You look good with a wig, without, and with the really awesome scarf.

You are beautifull, and I would as a man be proud of walk down the street with a woman as beautiful as you, wig,no wig,or scarf..you are just so lovely.

  • Hi Mary! With or without your hair, you are a brave and beautiful woman and an inspiration.

  • Go Mary! You are brave, courageous, and beautiful. Loved seeing you on Shear Genius.

  • The best alternative seems to be without wig or scarf. Believe me, you are gorgeous.

    Warmest regards.

  • Beautiful woman and a wonderful video! Keep up the great work!
