  • Kirsty Anna MacColl 10 October 1959 – 18 December 2000

  • Thanks for info on Kristy: I did not know her father was so famous. I know those whom she left behind, shall never forget her.

  • I bought two of her albums after listening to a story about her life on NPR several years ago. She was amazingly talented.

And in this song her accent could have easily passed for an American one (perhaps it's easier for the British to emulate American speech than Americans the British) . Great band here as well.

    RIP, Ms. MacColl.

  • @shaunthebeastgoneast SHAUNY!!! IN THESE SHOES????

    ;)

  • she was lovely.

  • A lovely lady, brilliant lyricist and singer. IBadly missed - I'll be there in Soho Sq on the 9th xx

  • With this ass?...I don't think so,...(honey)....

  • @TubeSecurity LOL. Dude, that's cold.

    :)

  • @TheBornPoet Thank you very much.

  • @TubeSecurity Don't mention it. :)

  • @TheBornPoet Too late.

  • @TubeSecurity Well, no... not too late for the ASS that I got.

    ;-o

  • @TheBornPoet hahaha, let me hear a poem.

  • i miss her so much...

    most people won't understand.

  • great music great heart. why do peolpe like her go. :*(

  • does nyone notice that every now and then theirs a noise that sounds like a speeboat revving up

  • As a American, I hadn't had the pleasure of hearing much Kirsty MacColl growing up, but she was featured on a Talking Heads album (along with Jonny Marr!) and I had to track her down. I ate up whatever I could and truly fell in love with her lyrics, her bright optimistic style, and, ... not to say least... her duet with The Pogues on the best Xmas song ever written. I was totally in love. It was then I had heard that she had died in 2000, about two years after I "discovered" her.

  • really fun song, thanks for this...

  • I've loved this song from the first hearing. Kirsty's version is the only one really worth listening to (imo)

    :0)

  • Wow love this voice

  • Great Tune.....Whats the story behind Kirsty MacColl?

  • @TheCornCobbers check our kirstymaccoll-dot-com.

Poor Kirsty: eleven years gone, and still loved.

  • Carlos Santana has done a lot of songs with various lyrcists & voalists. I'm wondering how it would have come out had he teamed up with ms McColl on this one :)

  • @CarlSchwamberger I just hope he never reads your comment ha,ha,ha!!

  • Caliente!

  • I feel like lassoing somebody! Yihaa!

  • This performance needs more men being walked on. :)

  • only know it from catherine tate :)

  • Please google Justice for Kirsty.

  • dint she get chopped up by a jet ski

  • @4thand6 Yes and no. She was actually hit by a full-sized speedboat while scuba diving in Cozumel. The boat had crossed into a roped off area. It was owned by a local multimillionaire who was on the boat, but one of his employees was allowed to pay a small fine based on his income in exchange for pleading guilty. Many think the millionaire was actually driving and paid off the employee to take the rap.

Her last action before she died was to push her son away from the boat,

  • @eauhomme It´s too embarrasing to know it all happened in my country.

  • @eauhomme That's a tragic story....I just found out about her music when this song came out in 2000, I think? I since bought every CD I could find by her. She's a great talent and I like her style...

  • 10 years on, RIP Kirsty.

One of my alltime favorite singer/songwriters.

  • 10 years on, RIP Kirsty.

  • As she wrote it she sang it her wayxx

  • Just like her da brave and funny...

  • @Kenentigern7" No way Jose" I like Camille.....then , the espanol' is very cool. :)

  • KIrsty wrote it and recorded it first, it's from an album called "Tropical Brainstorm"

  • I just discovered this singer. Who did this song first, she or Bette Midler? Thanks - DAVEDJ

  • @Multi1628 KIrsty did it first before bette midler got her claws into it and drained it of very ounce of irony.

  • @vermonttenor MUSIC REALLY DOES BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER. Had it not been for Bette Midler, I would probably not have "discovered" this great U.K. singer (R.I.P. KM). DAVEDJ

  • Catchy. Cool cat.

  • Thanx so much for posting wonderful performance

  • Miss you! Fantastic voice!

  • never enough of kirsty. she is beautiful and talented. i am so sad we have lost her on this planet....i am sure she is giving so much joy with her talent in another place. we play red shoes regularly at our dances and people love it. god bless !

  • @peck8ble

Or maybe she's in hell, suffering. I agree about her talent though.

  • You are totally wrong,

Kirsty was never an in your face performer, she was a great lyricist and used irony and understatement to tell the story.

  • @123ruffy I miss her so much..what a talent..wow!

  • @123ruffy Yes, I suppose you may be correct, I'm not familiar with Kristy MacColl's style. Thanks for the heads up...

  • Look at the eyes of the performers!

I like this song but they display in their eyes that they are sick and tired of performing this song.

Too bad, it robs the song of it's full value.

  • @TubeSecurity I understand that. I look to that in all of the great songs that have come from my favorite performers. But, really sometimes it was that one song that made them great...brought them to the place where they are now. I think that basically it's the price of fame.

Only some leave that place and go on, never returning. A favorite of mine in this place is the Pat Metheny Group, and the song "Are You Going With Me?"

  • @Elin48 Makes sense, and I'll check out the song.

  • @TubeSecurity - The looks on their faces are similar to those performing a tango, and just as appropriate! Besides, this was a new song, so how could they have been sick and tired of it already?

  • @judyahuffman I am wrong, and I love you!

  • @TubeSecurity Uh-oh! Did you see my silly, personal videos?!

  • Great album 'Tropical Brainstorm'. Her loss was so sad

  • Love it

  • Great song

  • Great song

  • Fantastic! One of the best.

  • I got this from The Catherine Tate Show, love it!

  • Well done Kirsty. You saved (some of) the best til last. Burn brightly ...

  • She got hit by a boat while swimming in Mexico on vacation with her family. Very tragic.

  • don't quite understand why my comment was removed. The Englishman is the weird masochist of the song, and , speaking as an English woman, it's bloody funny.

  • what year was this performance

  • It's so sad that she didn't live longer... her work was Tropical Brainstorm was excellent.

  • Comment removed

  • Whoa man! All hell's a poppin' on this tune! Fabulouso!

  • What a talent - she was unbelievable.

  • Great. She should have dueted with Gloria Estefan at least once. Since music brings peoples together, be they as politically opposed as one can imagine.

  • @pinkcookie1969 I were not insulting ANYONE. Before you go insulting me, learn English at a level to understand my post completely Thank you.

Plus, if I'm a "judgemental pee-brain" you're a fucking coward aren't you? Otherwise it would be possible to send you a PM in order to explain the matter to you. But I get "channel not available". Ahah. Block all communication that people cannot give you a decent telling-off huh? Now that's the way to go!

  • The Best !!

  • 2000 !!! Exactly that very year when she passed. That must've been shortly before...THAT fatal event.

  • The bravest and most dedicated woman ever.

There's one more angel in Heaven.

  • R.I.P. Kirsty ...

Fab track, fab voice & now voice of an angel.

    God bless.

    X

  • Wow! I'm a 40yr old music lover and this is the 1st time I've even heard of this beautiful singer/songwriter. RIP.

  • r.i.p kirsty macoll.

  • Does anyone know what song is in the background?? Cos there's like an instrumental version on this is football 2003, and it says it contains segments from another song??

  • There's a track by Willie Bobo called Spanish Grease that was used in the soundtrack for 'Out Of Sight' - too similar to be coincidence.

  • nice one, thanks

  • xxxxxx to kirsty

  • She was swimming near the beach on holiday and a speeding motorboat hit her.

  • @BladeCPL wot year was it ?????

  • wow i love this band and lady..fantastic i have never heard her before great!!

  • Lousy shoes chosen for this video, oddly,

    Great, sinuous number, though.

(Someone needs to motion-photoshop in some ruby stilettos.)

    A poignant loss.

    Kirsty MacColl 1959-2000

  • He is the man to the right (our right) of Kirsty, playing the trumpet.

  • Thank you

  • i remember this song being played after an episode of the catherine tate show.

  • Im called Kirsty...was named after her

  • Noooo! Really???

  • hehe my name is kirsty too! but its fully kirstyn.

  • did Kirsty play guitar at all? I'd imagine as a songwriter she didn't *just* sing...

  • yeah she plays guitar in "15 minutes"

  • Kirsty once commented in an interview that she could "play everything pretty badly". But many of her instrumentalist collaborators (e.g. Johny Marr, The Pogues) have commented on how musically literate she was.

  • yeah. this makes me happy in many ways.

  • this is awesome...like a mix of Bette Midler (who covered this) and Mae West. Brilliant!!!

  • What a fantastic Band. The way the bass player goes off for a dance then comes back slides one note then hits the beat with the whole band absolutely together is fantastic. Oh and of Kirsty sings like an angel as always

  • Chuco is an Artist !! a great bass player too

  • Just scored this on the wireless, R2. and it reminded me to break out Tropical Brainstorm again. What a great album.

  • Just completely brilliant!

  • wow. you can hear the Cuban influence. What an incredible lady.

  • no, plus she's English to begin with so it wouldn't mean anything...

  • I love her she was excellent..

  • When did she record this?

  • It was on her last album "Tropical Brainstorm" on V2 records, it was recorded in 1999, the year before she sadly passed away......

  • @123ruffy pass away?? how old was she??

  • Great Version,

The music is from Spanish Grease by Willie Bobo. Killer tune.

  • your an asshole, grow up.

  • Geez you're a dumb ass...

  • Gee, I had no idea she is dead. What a loss. She looks so young and brilliant. Looks like I became a fan too late, but I can still enjoy what she produced. Thanks for posting the song

  • luv u kirsty x x

  • Great song, thanks for uploading.

    Kirsty died too young.

  • How did she die ???? I just discovered her...sob !

  • @pocomamma In December 2000 singer Kirsty MacColl was killed in front of her two children by a speed boat belonging to one of Mexico's wealthiest businessmen. The boat was also travelling very fast and in waters that it shouldn't have been in. Although the boat owners said that they were travelling at one to two knots in an area that they were allowed in, there are so many witnesses that say it was travelling between 15-20 knots and directly on the reef. The driver was never prosecuted.

  • @ernieernie Thank you for this heartbreaking news. How dare "they" not jail someone for muerte (death and murder!!) Espanol mi abla perfecto but South American Justice, especially Mexico are known to be easily bribed. One Perfect reason that I frequent Cuba or Spain, Europe. I just discovered this wonderful singer and was she Scottish, perhaps English..? Do you know ? It is just that her name is so very common in Scotland..large Clan of MacColl's..also in Eire.

  • @pocomamma Kirsty was English, born in Croydon, south of London. Her father was Ewan MacColl, one of England's most famous folk singers. Born Jimmy Miller, he claimed to be Scottish (and adopted a Scottish name) but was in fact born in Salford. She was a national treasure.
