  • This is just mind blowing. I mean look at his legs. They are skinny for an Oly lifter yet he puts up Kgs that even 105s would do well to get. Amazing athlete.

  • greatest lifter for sure, there are some great ones over the years !

  • One of, if not the greatest lifter of all time in my opinion. Lucky enough to see him lift at the 1981 world Championships in Lile. Superb athlete.

  • i think he is the only lifter who didnt drive hips into the bar in second pull yes?

  • @atgcuz and yo the difference in height of weightlifters in between weight class is very marginal. Give or take a few inches here and there. Do you know a good lifter who is tall? Hossein Rezazadeh is still only 6'1

  • @asianstrength 6'1 is considered tall in nearly every country.

  • @EndlersaurusRex for someone who weigh 152 kg, 6'1 is short. People with that kind of weight would have to be at least 7'0. For someone who doesn't know weightlifting they would just look at Rezazadeth and think he's an obese, fat lazy shit.

  • @asianstrength Point is 6'1 is not short compared to normal people...7 feet is also a gross exaggeration since I've seen people around 6'4-6'5 at that weight who don't look fat at all.

  • @EndlersaurusRex a normal person who is 6'1 would weigh significantly less than rezazadeth. You don't undertsand my point. Tell me someone who is around 6'4 6'5 that is 152 kg and doesn't look fat. Arnold Schwarzenegger at 6'2 who has the best body genetic ever has an off-season weight at 120 kg and competition weight at 110 kg.

  • @asianstrength See watch?v=BHONLnf85BY. This is my brother, and he doesn't look fat to me. In this video he was 6'4, ~152 kg, and you couldn't see a belly unless he was shirtless. He's a thrower, not an Oly lifter, nor a BBer. Many throwers and strongmen weigh similarly and just look huge (some do look fat, though). Genetics play a big role.

I understand you point; mine is that no matter what weight, 6'1" is not short compared to the average of nearly every country.

  • @EndlersaurusRex that dude is a fat fuck! even at 6'4 152kg is still fat. 6'1 is not short for normal people but I'm talking about weightlifting stupid american.

  • @asianstrength You sound upset. You asked for someone who doesn't "look" fat at 152 kg. I gave you someone. You used all these examples for weight that don't have to do with weightlifting. Me being American has nothing to do with this; I'm not being arrogant. I'm not ignorant. I know Rezazadeh is fat and someone of that weight that isn't fat is taller, but he is above the average height for both the average population, and the average height of SHW (184 cm 6'), you tool.

  • @EndlersaurusRex you are the most stupid bitch ever. I'm saying 6'1 is short for Rezazadeth's weight class. Nobody is talking about the general population. Do you often see people 6'5 or above that succeed in olympic weightlifting? fuck your stupid discuss throwing. this is Olympic weightlifting. don't bother reply to this.

  • @asianstrength It's funny you generalize me as a dumbass American when you yourself cannot even have a conversation without getting frustrated and swearing. I gave you the actually averages for Rezazadeh's weight class. He's taller than them, which would mean he's "tall".

Such a pitiful, little, angry person you are.

  • @atgcuz There are other deciding factors in a good weightlifter not just the length of one's limb. I guess we need to be scientist with phd to figure out that only tall people do well in basketball and volley ball too right?

  • @atgcuz Any weightlifting coach or strength coach for that matter will tell you that having short limbs are a good genetical factor for strength related events. Why do you think powerlifters have short limbs? Why do they squeeze their shoulders and raise their lower back for the bench press? It's to reduce the distance that bar has to travel.

  • Comment removed

  • how the hell did he do that.. has anyone else ever cleaned 230kg in his weightclass? i wonder if his body shape had anything to do with it. he had such long limbs and seemed to have really flexible legs/hips

  • @atgcuz having long limbs would be a disadvantage in weightlifting. That's why many weightlifters are short.

  • Comment removed

  • @atgcuz Obviously weightlifters in the higher weight class is gonna be taller because they're heavier. Look at Halil Mutlu, Liao Hui and other weightlifters in the lighter weight class. Having long arms would mean a longer travel distance when doing the jerk. having long legs mean you have to pull the weight higher in the power clean. DUH!

  • Molodec Յուրի Վարդանյան:

  • As impressive now as it was when I first saw the photos of these lifts back in the 80s.Boy was he ripped. His quads are amazing.

  • @shark1806 Its a 405kg total. !82.5 KILO snatch and 224 Kg clean and jerk.

  • @vardank1987 Doesn't 182.5+224= 406.5?

  • @shark1806 do you understand something from weightlifting??? It's total of 405kg

  • @Ponomarev666 ye i know that ,bye now and stop spam idiot.

  • @shark1806 idiot

  • @gevo4258 you are dumb moron fuck off

  • Singularly the most impressive athletic accomplishment ever. Cleaning and nearly jerking 230 at 82.5 kg.! The 105s barely do more than than. He looks so strong he might explode.

  • @zenstoic He made a mistake trying to go 6 for 6 if he'd taken the 230 on his 2nd jerk attempt I feel he would have held the weight! However, I favor Asen Zlatev, because he snatched 183 and jerked 225 at 82.5 and was two inches taller than Vardanian--more height in bone, less in muscle. Height to weight ratio favored Vardanian yet Zlatev was his equal! Again, the 230 if taken as a 2nd attempt probably would have succeeded, which would even have been more than Ken Patera did.

  • If he squats more in the split jerk, he woud have got under the bar for the 230 KG and made it

  • For the benefit of those who may not know, Vardanian 400 KG total in 1980 Olympics would have won him three medals in weight catagories above his weight group of 82.5, he would won the gold the 90 KG where the gold medalist totaled 377.5, the 100 KG where the gold medalist totaled 395, would wina bronze in the 110 where the bronze medalist totaled 390 and would have finished fifth in the unlimted catagory 110+ which is very respectful. So three golds and a bronze, not bad

  • @khonfosh When you put in context like that, people might get it into their head the awesominity of the man!

  • Armenia...........

  • HE WAS BEST!!!

  • 224kg @ 85 !! damn

  • @illouie 82.5 KG not 85 KG

  • @khonfosh Well excuse me..

  • uraaaaaaaaa

  • They should bring back the old weight catagories, my understanding none of the new records for the new weight catagories are higher than the old record despite the fact, the new catagories are higher in weight in most classes. 85KG record is below the old 82.5 KG, 94 KG record is below 90 KG, 62 KG record is below 60 KG, 105 KG record is below 100 KG, 77 KG is below 75 KG.

  • recordsmen

  • I just read YV's height was 5'7" I knew Zlatev was 5'9" so for me it settles the question--which was the superior lifter? YV got more attention, but Zlatev was superior--taller in same weight class = more merit--height to weight ratio favors shorter lifter. Zlatev's 2 best comp lifts were 183 and 225! Too bad V didn't take the 230 as 2nd attempt I think it would have succeeded (and maybe edged past Zlatev. I said "maybe.")

  • @skirts365 ACHIEVMENTS ARE N0T MEASURED BY HEIGHT DUMB FUCK BUT BY T0TAL KGS.

  • @asborisov1 Screw you for screaming at me! Screw you for cussing me! Plenty of people have the same view I expressed. And screw you again, dumb fuck.

  • @asborisov1 Does anyone believe there was no relationship between the FACT of Pocket Hercules being 3 & a half inches SHORTER than Ike Berger, and the matter of Pocket adding 37.5KG to Berger's 152.5 world record, set in 1960? Less height = more weight in muscle, less in bone only muscle moves weight. Unofficially at least such differences merit consideration and in no way is it wrong to point such matters out. Had Pocket been Berger's height that 190 could NOT have been done!!!

  • In another contest he weighed 85.5 kilos and snatched 190---equal to Alexeev's competition best.

  • Carryin a 15" log, 15 K's, (1/3 marathon in 3 hours), works your whole body, mind,/ soul as well. Click on, (the walking log), on youtube videos.

  • im pretty sure thats not 405 kilos. Over 800 lb snatch? He''d be superman...

  • @toolong46

dude 405 kg TOTAL offcourse.....weird jerk indead. his legs are a little bit small for a weightlifter.

  • This is a very interesting jerk style. The right foot does not split forward very far so that when receiving the bar, the right knee is not vertical but in a quarter squat like a power jerk. Yet the left leg is split behind. Obviously VERY effective.

Huge thanks to Nork and Patrick for allowing weight lifters and fans to enjoy this absolutely amazing video!

  • ARMENIAN POWERRRRR.

  • I wonder what his vertical jump would've been.

  • @speshalsauz i think there is a picture of him jumping over a bar thats his height. he didnt even have to tuck in much

  • @jakebrigand Where is this picture?

  • @ArtjomGlad just search "yurik vardanyan" on google images and it pops up on the second row

  • I saw Yurik lift in person several times. The 1978 World's were held in, of all places, Gettysburg, PA. The most outstanding performances were by Bulgarian 67.5 Yanko Rusev and Vardanian at 82.5. World records fell like rain. I captured all of their great lifts on my Super 8 movie camera. Afterwards I shook Yurik's hand. I was amazed at his seemingly slight build and small hands. His chief rival in those days, Bulgarian Asen Zlatev, was cut from the same mold. Astounding. Stupifyingly strong.

  • Something near perfect was going on with his nervous system. That could be more important than optimized hormone level.

  • @skirts365 yeah his son is a lifter to there is a vid of him doinga 210 C&J, they definitely have the genetics for the sport. So much more than just roids

  • WOW!

  • SUPPER

  • He had somewhat slender build. No one looking at his build would believe he could negotiate such loads. This is a great case study in nervous system efficiency. His lifts suggest an off racks front squat of 600+ pounds, as lifters can usually do 20% more than best clean and jerk. How many larger power lifters could do a bottoming out front squat with 600+? Maybe a few supers---if they have any strength that far down, that is. He could have done well at strength gymnastics moves on rings.

  • @skirts365 he could have done well at anything athletic I'd bet!

  • @tombennettpiano One of the top supers said he was "exceptionally weak without the restoratives." Interesting. But rumors abound, like the one as to the alleged weakness of Pisarenko's legs. With a 606 training clean and jerk, I'd give half my life savings to have such weak legs.

  • @skirts365 I'd say he would have been good at anything he tried with those genetics...just amazing.

  • Eastern Europeans trump all others in strength training.

  • PS: he was known in the sport for pulling with high hips. Watch you'll see!

  • One of the greatest. Insanely strong.

  • 400+ for an 82.5kg man is mind fuckin blowing. I mean, he lifts almost 3 times his own weight over his head in clean and jerk. He s in the same category as Pyrros Dimas is, yet for all I know, Dimas had a record c&j of 215 and snatch of 178. Nowhere near 224-182.5. THAT IS CRAZY SHIT. Why I never heard of this guy...?

  • @bpmelo dude, i aint stupid, and I know something about weightlifting. Read again.

  • @bpmelo man, i have read my first post again, AND SERIOUSLY YOU ARE FUCKIN STUPID TO UNDERSTAND IT THE WAY YOU DID. GO FUCKIN DIE.

  • haha too many idiots in the comment section. Do there people believe their own stupid shit? If it was simply a case of doing a few cycles of gear then BOOM automatic world champion we would have more champs than average joes!! Seriously, get your head out your arse. Yes they used gear but so what, they would still be 1000 times better than you even if you were given free steroids for life!! Stop hating and being jealous, it's pathetic.

  • du legendes

  • Who cares if steroids were used.I started lifting in1983 and these guys were like gods to everyone at the gym.We read about their records in awe and we never felt any animosity to them because of roid use.All top lifters in the 80s used them but guys like Yuri and Asen Zlatev were in a league of their own. This sort of lifting won't be repeated, because wealth and fame can be more easily achieved these days with less strenuous methods in the former Soviet republics.Eg The Mafia.

  • absolutely incredible. possibly the most athletic human ever

  • классная техника

  • just to be clear, I was referring to Tarranenko at the end of previous post!! Drugs or no drugs, Mr. Vardanian is my new Hero!

  • Why is this guy not as world renowned as Naim, Kurlovich etc.?!!! I've known of them since I was a kid, yet I'm ashamed to admit this is the first I've seen of Vardanian. I'm struggling to pick my jaw up from the floor here lol, that's the coolest thing I've ever seen!! I'm in awe of this man.

Ps. Judging by previous posts, Tarranenko had some bitterness about Vardanyan's achievements and felt the need to insinuate it was just the drugs that did it. If so he sounds a bit of a bitch to me.

  • 224kg cj is sooo impressive for a 82,5 bw. Dimas record was 215kg cj at 85 bw...

  • 80's were all about the roids, the reason this has not been touched since is because they actually get tested these days lol

  • 224 c&j at 82.5 is so absurd i can't even comprehend it with my human brain

  • but urik vardanyan have a olimpic record 240kg.where is it?

  • Urik Vardanian is the Best because he is Armenian

  • i will be the next urik vardanian

  • One of the Russian/Soviet supers said Vardanian was "exceptionally weak without the restoratives." I have my suspicions, but those who've been closer to international events---in your view, what specific substances was he talking about? It may have been Taranenko.

  • according to the screen its 182.5 snatch and 224 clean and jerk which gives him a 406.5kg total.

  • In those days, while records in the snatch and jerk could increase by half a kilo at a time, the official TOTAL was only allowed to be recorded in WHOLE NUMBER multiples of 2.5 kg, so that here, even though the jerk is 224 kg, only 222.5 kg can be applied to the official total. That's because 222.5 = 2.5 X 89 (a whole number) but 224 = 2.5 X 89.6 (not a whole number). A weird rule that lifting had for decades, but was finally eliminated.

  • @finrod55 wow. that is a strange rule, but i suppose there have been stranger. still an epic lifter.

  • I was just wondering about the plates. Was that two red and two blue (and then the smaller ones)...?

  • Vardanian was a legendary lifter :) Very strong man.

  • i weigh exactly 82.5 and do just over half of this legends total

  • 506 clean @ 181 body weight is FKN GOD LIKE! JUICE OR NO JUICE I DONT CARE!

  • the 80s= the steroids era in east-Europe

  • @italokid80

    clean, potential, AWESOME steroids :)

  • @italokid80

but it was so in the states aswell... steroid era... now steroids are very rarely even sued, they use some real cartoon shit now days

  • amazing

  • true hero.God bless Armenians

  • Amazing nervous system connective tissue & metabolism. IMO role of drugs may be overrated and role of nutrition partially forgotten. What is most important "nutrient?" Oxygen--death in minutes without it. I continue to wonder if lifters like him were on hyperbaric oxygen before and after sessions also the electric nerve stimulating machines then there are adaptogenic substances that aren't banned drugs.

  • @skirts365 Interesting points! However, the energy systems involved in during the lift are largely anaeroibic (ie oxygen delivery is not a limiting factor in the ability to complete the lift). At atmospheric pressures, a normal person is able to achieve near complete saturation of the haemoglobin in their blood on room air; any additional added oxygen is unlikely to be of any benefit. Hypobaric training (ie at altitude) may be of benefit in sports where endurance is more important,

  • the best wheightlifter all time . the best vertical jump all time

  • dam... thats like lifting a small car.

  • if that's really 405kg, i will shit my pants!! thats crazy

  • actually 405kg ws his total... meaning his clean and jerk weight plus his snatch weight

  • @50dragonhawk77 and 405kg, isnt that like almost 900 pounds?

  • Yuri Vardanian is a legend of weightlifting.. probably the best ever

  • OEDBrowser i agree with those picks but i might include zackarevich in the list also. Definitely suleymanoglu and vardanian are in a league of their own

  • @acehead0987 - Zacharevich , David Rigert ; Vasiliy Alekseyev ; Norayr Nurikyan ; Janko Rusev and some others were excellent - but as you metnioned Yurik Vardanian and Naim Shuleimanoglu were simply the best - just outstanding

  • Zlatev of Bulgaria equalled Urik's 400kg and 405kg totals and set the all-time record for the light-heavyweight clean and jerk at 225kg This was the only C&J record @82.5 he managed to make because Urik had set the bar pretty high but it has never been equalled or beaten. It's a shame that these two did not face off at the summer olympics in top shape.

  • The camera work is really bad in this clip.

  • I would rate Vardanian along with Sulamologlu( taking the particular culture in vogue at the time into consideration !!) to to be ! pound for pound ! the greatest lifters to date !!. I am well aware of the controversy surrounding all power sports and the widespread use of drugs, allegedly !!!!!

  • 230 kg c+j !! Thats elite in todays 105 kg class!!

  • He still had 2 mins on the clock at his last lift. I wonder if he had taken a longer rest....

  • @weightliftingisgreat Well he had 3min and I think his rest was about 1min

  • Whatever he did in his training, this is awesome.

  • Face it - most elite athletes use doping. But that doesn't really discredit their achievements, most people can not achieve their level even if they bathe in steroids for their whole lives.

  • I love to bathe in stereoids ...

  • @npacebg

    +100000 fir me !!

Correct point of view dear friend !!

  • @npacebg thats not fair, that was then. Now many legitimate lifters are clean. Unless your from china, then thats a dif. story

  • @PilarskysPlayhouse69 There's nothing shameful in using steroids, really. The fact is that anyone who gets these numbers clean is probably one in a billion. Just check out the list of suspended competitors at iwf.net - most people use roids, it's just that some don't get caught during their career.

  • @npacebg im not undermining there accomplishments. But it's not fair to have that prejudice because there are also those who follow the rules and dont juice. Steroids make a huge difference. Now for all the people who are not lifters and are judging these guys thats one thing. However, for those who know the dedication that clean lifters do, you will understand how much of an advantage any illegal substance can make. I think today lifters (every1 juiced in past) are innocent until proven guilty

  • @npacebg make them work a full time job like me and get them off the roids, the playing field will be much more even son, you have no fucking idea !

  • How the heck did Yurik get away with his grip and rip foolhardiness? Doesn't it require quite a bit of set up to get the hook grip in place? Or did this guy have iron clamps in place of hands?

  • I think it's called the modified dive style where you just quickly sit down, grip the bar and go. Not sure of the reason behind it but I saw some other lifter doing it, Ivan Chakarov .

  • dimas' best clean was 230, and this guy almost c&j it? it is pretty hard to believe these guys were natural

  • I really hope you don't think Dimas is "natural".

  • to be honest i dont think anyone at this level is natural, maybe the americans

  • And why would you think that Americans are clean? Because they didn't win anything in this sport? Their training methods sucked and that's all. Americans are not different than any nation when it comes to doping. Carl Lewis wasn't clean, Michael Johnson is connected to Balco affair, not to mention the ones that confessed like Marion Jones, etc...

  • @ytubeserb

I agree. Americans have the biggest drug culture of any nation, because of bodybuilding and fitness industry. So to say the top athletes don't use is crazy.

  • yeh and they're shite

  • vardanian was allegedly very weak off the drugs according to taranenko

  • @Myself0101 source please

  • @dan7edan7e

B.C. I've heard the Khristov and Vardanyan were not very strong when not using restoratives?

Taranenko: I've heard that about Khristov too. Vardanyan was incredibly weak, without them.

  • dimas' best clean is 230? where did you read that? I've seen vids of him front squatting 230 easy but I've the heaviest lift he did in comp was 215 and an attempt at 217.5, I'm assuming that was a training lift while on a cycle?

  • no one like him has come to the sport not yet!

  • e Yurik djan eranek ne jamanaknere

  • He also has a cadence and rhythm like a golfer putting, or a basketball player shooting a free throw. He has a distinct routine which is an advantage and he was way ahead of his time with this.

  • I remember in 1980 when he blew away the records, I wrote a letter to Sports Illustrated which they published. Of course the US boycotted those games so little coverage was given overall, but I am glad my letter made it.

I never saw him live, but I did see David Rigert set a WR and it was electrifying. This was the golden age.

  • How much is he Clean jerking here?

  • In fact, Zlatev's best comp snatch & jerk would give him a 408 total. Vardanian would have made the 230 had he taken it on 2nd attempt---6 for 6 is too taxing. Pervy stood SO easily with 493 when he did it for a record. Since them was Dimas, who weighed more and lifted less, but his manner of putting weight from shoulders to locked arms was more difficult--more merit--but not for official tally purposes. Zlatev definitely could have done a 230 and I think Pervy too.

  • such great lirting...so inspiring!!!

  • YURIK djigyart ytem,dy voch miain Lennakani gerbn es ail amboxj HAY azgi, astvac kez kadj aroxdjytiyun ta

  • Jan!!!

  • he has a strange form, almost like good a.m.'ing the weight. yet it works for him though

  • Armenian power what else................

  • For these lifts: BEAST MODE [ON] - OFF

  • Get crunk Urik.

  • 20 million steroid users worldwide. But his records are not even approached. The reason is: He has 20 million times more class than you jealous wannabes. :)

  • That´s true , he was great !

  • @wolfgangle didnt arsen zlatev do 405?

  • @wolfgangle Right on!

  • @wolfgangle Higher level of desire does not explain his ability. Genetics, possibly his is very exceptional. Substances, which are no longer in use or not available? His Bulgarian competitor Zlatev was equally amazing and deserves more notice than he gets. If we could know all of their training and recovery methods I feel there would be eyebrow raisers.

  • @wolfgangle Yihaa dead on man!! Nicely put!

  • Amazing.

I'm very surprised that his split is so short, and unstable looking, yet he's able to set world records.

  • Пиздетс сила.

  • Times are difficult (or even impossible) to compare but a fact is, that in these times he certainly did one of the most amazing lifts.

    Great

  • Великий Юрий Варданян и его непревзойденная сумма 405

  • ARMENIAN PRIDE

  • This is lifting from the Golden Age of Eastern Bloc lifting.Let's be blunt here.Everyone at the time was on steroids. But the Soviet and Bulgarian lifters were still so far ahead of everyone else.I still remember thinking as to what weights these supermen were capable of.Then it it all imploded and weightlifting is now seen as a tarnished sport. They kept changing the weight classes, and as a final abomination, allowed women into what was the ultimate male sport.Blasphemy!

  • what the hell is the matter with you? Women are better built for the sport than men are.

  • Are you you aware of something called "humour"?

  • how on earth did you come to that conclusion?

  • what conclusion are you referring to?
