Well, it sort of did become it's own genre... and that genre is called "dubstep", or "grime", which has become hugely popular in the UK these last few years. Quite a few dubstep/grime musicians have cited Streets of Rage as an influence on the genre.
While BK3 is the better version, some critics are overly harsh on this game, it's still one of the best beat em ups on the Genesis, and no matter which version you have, the soundtrack is a work of genius.
I like how SOR3 had a whole bunch of diverse levels. It wasn't the traditonal street levels like SOR1 and 2. Though not as good as it's predicesors, SOR3 is different and thats what attracts me to it.
I'm glad this game had balls to incorporate the use more enemies with projectile weapons besides knives. The agents, always firing at you, made an interesting challenge, and the ninjas in this game were much harder, they threw more shurikens than they did in SOR 2. Add to that you had Zan who could convert weapons into energy shots,
I remember the first time I played this, thinkin "This stage is too perfect for one of those clowns from SoR 1.." Lo and behold at the end, Bruce the ringleader clown, and his minion, Roo.
THERE WAS A CODE IN THIS GAME WHERE U COULD UNKOCK THE KANGAROO OR SHIVA ONCE U BEAT THEM USE THESE TWO WELL REALLY SHIVA TO HELP U END THIS CLASSIC GAME
Instead of doing the title screen cheat, I always did the codes while I was progressing. Hold B after fighting Shiva until the next stage starts up and when fighting Roo, don't kill him. As long as you kill his trainer and keep Roo alive, you get to play as both.
It's annoying when Roo can't hold weapons (because of his gloves) but his dash attack move is pretty powerful if you know how to use it well. :)
@mistertitanic You are in the extreme minority. Most people think SoR2 is far superior. Superior graphics, music, gameplay, everthing. SOR3 looks rushed and grainy.. SOR2 is polished as hell.
@ojideagu I've updated that comment. I like Rage 2 the best. But don't insult rage 3 either. I love them both. I don't think rage 3 is rushed, in fact, it has my favorite gameplay, and graphics are every bit as great as Rage 2.
@mistertitanic IMO if you study the backgrounds and sprites of SOR3, they are grainy and flat with an ugly palette, especially the Greens. SOR2 looks so smooth and shaded it sparkles. The only area SOR3 is possibly better is speed.
@ojideagu Yes the speed is what makes it the most fun. and IMO, Graphics don't make a game. Graphics are the least important aspect of a videogame to me. Can't we just agree that all 3 Streets of Rages are great?
@mistertitanic Yeh they are all good games, I just feel SOR3 was a bit of a slack sequel but I like the big sprites and its still fun and the second best SOR game, with a few good tracks like this one.
@ojideagu I'd probably say all 3 are equal. Rage 2 might have an ever so light edge. but it seems that 1 game will have something the other 2 don't, and Btw, I love the music in all 3. Yes, even the 3rd :) I love it!
@mistertitanic One of my biggest gripes is the western version with the horrific colour change of the main characters and altering some of the enemies and story! It made it look even less like streets of rage with Axels stained brown clothes and blazes faded grey outfit etc! I think that contributed to it flopping in the west
@ojideagu Yes the story is strange, I had a lot of questions but no where in the game were they answered. and the yellow shirt and grew clothes just got me mad too. There was NO reason for them to change it.
@ojideagu I am most certainly aware of that :) I have never once beaten Streets of Rage 3. If I'm correct, your not allowed to beat the game on easy mode. only normal or hard. because the game ends on level 5 on easy. Damn, great game, but HARD AS HELL. I've beaten a lot of hard games (just read my channel description) but I still can't beat this game!!
I'm like this... I went straight from 1 to 3, never played 2 until VERY recently... I think 3 is the better of the series simply because when I played 2, it really didnt hit as hard for me as 3 did.
Idk... maybe its that whole "I grew up with this" mentality lol.. But this was my fav track nxt to the character select
@ojideagu I think it's a hate it or love it thing. SOR2's controls seemed tense to me compared to 3. Granted I havent played either in a while, but I still remember that.
i gotta say, the music for SORF 1&2 was much better. I always thought the soundtrack for this game was kind of messed-up and annoying. The actual gameplay itself wasn't bad, I liked the fact that each player had weapon specials. Still, no 2 is the best of the lot.
Um, yeah... delay? Between attacks and moving? An overpowered Grand Upper? Gee, that's definitely crisp! And it still makes no sense that Skate was the only one able to run! And add to that, there truly is NO need for that 99 second timer if you're fast enough! Which is like 99% of the time!
if we're debating strictly the fighting engine then I'd go with SOR3 but 2 had cleaner graphics, waaay better music and far more polished presentation. Despite the flaws in the gameplay you've mentioned it was still tricky to beat.
Nay, man. It was the flaws that MADE it tricky to beat. And, being serious for a moment... it WASN'T that tricky to beat. None of them were, really. The graphics definitely were more colorful, and energetic. The music? Of course you like it. Because there's probably a part of you that likes House beats. This is some serious techno right here. JUNGLE-LIKE techno. Far too intense for your tastes.
what u call flaws i'd call part of the games charm. the action did seem kind of jerky, the controls unresponsive to button mashing yes, but it made the game more about timing.
SR 3 had some terrible sfx, and music in general? although I'd tip my hat to koshiro's bold effort to be innovative, and intense as you say, I think most would agree the end result was weak compared to previous efforts.
p.s.I always played it on the hardest setting and it was more than challenging.
'Kay, now I'm at a point of agreement. Last note...
The sound effects, I felt, were actually more realistic, sans the screams. SOR2 like Renegade said, hits and BAM! But if that's what you actually did to someone IRL, that sound wouldn't happen.
look. in real life, one person cannot beat up 2000 gangsters. and fat guys don't blow fireballs at you in a fight. and in real crime-land it's not only the final boss who has an AK47.
the sfx sound cool for what it is, a GAME.
it'd be pretty damn traumatic wouldn't it..copying real life...someones guts hanging out after you'd just knifed them or someones skull caving-in after a vicious jumping headstomp.lol. how accurate does it need to be?
Wow, you're totally going overboard with the realism thing, man. I, for one, like sor2's visceral comic book-type sfx. But I don't think that a healthy dose of realistic SFX hurts matters either. Look at most realistic kung-fu films. There's hardly any impact sound on that, but noone complains about it either.
that is so wrong what you said about SOR2. Evilkris is right the gameplay of SOR2 feels MUCH more crisp and well refined than SOR3. the only bad thing I can say about SOR2s gameplay is its a bit too slow. a run move isnt necessary for a good game but it wouldve been cool
@Renegade466isback i totally agree with you on the sound effects. that was a big turn off for me back then. i didn't want to play the game because of that. i thought the music wuz tight though but thats about it.
