I ABSOLUTELY agree with you on this point..BUT,when I hear Sylvain playing I can't rule out the fact that is is the most COMPLETE guitarist I've ever hear:he got the technic, the soul, the melody, the virtuosity, the intensity and even the humor..So I can't help thinking that I have never heard something like that in the guitar history and I think sometimes in music there is some guys who are totally above the others (monk, bird, django, trane etc),Sylvain is one of them, and it is important to say.
This improvisation reminds me of being a child, summer days, first love and so many other things. Still remains as the most beautiful thing I've ever heard.
@mattdavgra Son... he is way way better than Bireli - Bireli is a shredder who sometimes forgets the musically because playing fast is more important to him. Sylvain is a lot more creative and makes Bireli's playing look two dimensional... some people don't see that because they are simply not ready to hear a guy play this way
Too bad he uses those Godin guitars.... the tone is awefull... they have good playability but the sound is like some plastic shit... he only plays with those because it's a rich company that gives him money for it. I would rather hear him on a real acoustic guitar.
I only said it because I have a rare live solo from Allan and he plays a bunch of wild chords with interspersed lines. I think the parallel is that in both cases I don't know what the F is going on. Sylvain is a masterful player and of course stands as a genius in his own right.
What do you mean by 'here we have beauty'? Holdsworth's music doesn't move you? I'll upload a ballad from him that may change your mind pascal. I hope it does anyways.
I listened again to Holdworth, and I feel the same way as I did 30 years ago: he is a monster, his music is interesting, musically speaking; it's worth studying, but to me it's definitely cold.
The only context where I liked him was the first UK album.
So tasteful, so pure ..He is not trying to show his amazing technic but he is only playing with his heart, as well he is probably one the best guitarist ever , maybe the best of all time..I'm serious.
@remijazz I have never felt so amazed by a jazz guitarist and I am sure he has much broader shoulders than I can imagine. He is the best I have every heard. Here is the first guitarist that has stopped me in my tracks in over 50 years of being a guitarist or have I grown up at the hands of his genius.
Totally agree with you! Those tones from him goes straight to my heart, it just feel so good listening to him. I've been playing for 30+ years and he is such a inspiration.. I was so lucky to see Luc, Bona & Gadd when they played at Cosmopolite in Oslo last year.. Oh my...
@remijazz I think everyone should just drop the whole "He/She is the best" attitude. He plays great things his own way, you can't gauge that and you shouldn't. Music at its core is not a competition, maybe trying to get that next gig is, but not music overall.

@florianocoelho I wouldnt say that Sylvain is "way better than bireli". I agree that Sylvain is more creative and bireli cares more about shredding.
Sylvain is one of the top guitarrists but his is not way better than bireli, he migth be bettert but not waaay better.

Guitar Godin = 2000 euro
patatra 2 years ago 3
@hideare It's a Godin Multiac. There is a version with nylon strings, and Sylvain Luc plays both, and regularly _has_ both, during his concerts.
I'd say he plays the one with steel strings on this video, but that's just me. The sound is just not good enough to judge.

Nothing to see with Holdsworth...here we have beauty.
I think this impro is based on a basque tune (Sylvain is basque).
