I think Zooropa was their last great album...it was a postcard from the ZOOTV tour and a continuation of what they started on Achtung Baby in much the same way that Rattle and Hum was a continuation of The Joshua Tree.
Alas, I fear that Achtung Baby was their last great album. I really wish the band would have forgot about Zooropa and just focused on recording at least one more album of Achtung's caliber for the 90's. After Achtung/Zoo TV I think the band got a little diluted and power-hungry: i.e. "WOW, every time we make ourselves over and take on a new sound everyone will just eat it up!" Oh well, still a great band, maybe they have one more classic left in em'?
@thesacredmongoose i understand your sentiment about Zooropa, and i would never say it is better than Achtung Baby. however, songs like Zooropa, Lemon, Stay, and The Wanderer are special. i wasn't especially enthusiastic about it for years, but i'm glad they worked as hard as they did to get it out as quickly as they did. Pop is another matter! instead of recording/touring Pop, i think a record with songs like MIss Sarajevo and Your BLue Room, If GOd WIll Send...would have been a nicer option.
i at first hated this cd because i refused to believe that it was U2 but then i started listening to it and loved every nook and cranny of tghis album. this is one of my fav albums of all time. i love UI2 and all but i do hate pop and zooropa.
How come of 1833 viewers none left a comment? Sure the quality of the video might not be the greatest, but we can still appreciate the content. Oh, and how "hard" the boys worked on the album :)

this period of the group was a huge shock that i grew to love.
definitely an important piece of my adolescence.
the Bill Flanagan book U2 At The End Of The World really brought it all back in the best way.
