eh no that was a reply to a guy/gal who claimed it was an old american war song but actually its an old irish rebel song(in which the irish fought many battles/wars against colonial rule not unlike americans....except the french got fucked over in their attempt to intervene in the irish up-rising). i was not claiming that america isnt built on other cultures i was just correcting the fact that he/she was wrong, and it is infact irish. thanks for the feedback
old american war song my ass, ehh sorry but its from an irish song....hence the lyrics.."while going the road to sweet athy"...are americans just compelled to take credit for the work of other cultures or just plain stupid? id say both
Hey, um, you do know that America is made up of tens if not hundreds of other cultures? The fact is the Irish WENT to America and they fought in the AMERICAN civil war. Why don't you find your own war and sing in that. Bloody self righteous Irish at it again.
America is made up of many different cultures including the Irish, English, Dutch, German, Italian etc etc. So people migrating to America is Americans stealing other peoples culture? Right...
Well it's not an old American war song if it's originally from the Irish culture. They adapted it from the Irish in the civil war, it was not however American in the first place.
(1) The tune is an Irish folk song, Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye, which dealt with the forced conscription of the Irish to serve the East India Company, early 19th c.
(2) Patrick Gilmore adapted this during the Civil War, which became When Johnny Comes Marching Home.
(3) Later (we're talking late 19th-early 20th c.), this was adapted as a childrens' song/sunday school rhyme, Ants Go Marching/Animals Went In &c.
Jeez, Americans these days. Think they invented everything.
Lets use logic here people. Noahs Ark is religious. Religion has been around a lot longer then wars. The Johnny comes marching home song is obvious a war refrence, and such a song only comes from recent wars, ie. WW1 etc.
Therefore it's fairly obvious Noahs Ark came around before that. I don't doubt Wiki would also agree with me ;)
Ok, so war is just a recent thing then? I'm sorry to say that the song is as has already been said an Irish folk song which then crossed the Atlantic to become When Johnny Comes Marching Home. This is a few hundred years ago when the colonials were fighting each other about who owned what in the land of the free you see. Its only recently, say in the last 100 years that the song has been adapted to Noahs Ark. If you believe the bible though then feel free to disagree because its the gospel truth

Right - to clear up the confusion about the song.
Hope that gets it straight for you.
oxuuniv2320 3 years ago 4
mate you got that information from wiki and they say osmething like it not definately the irish folk song that came first...
hularuns 3 years ago
In which case the wiki is wrong. If you correlate it to the historic events, you'll see.
