  • 2001 was a terrible year for cinema...Hannah was great, and I thought The Hangover Part II was reasonably enjoyable even though it was incredibly crass...But that's it. At least Django Unchained is coming out this year...in December...Guess I'll have to wait for another year of boring, uninteresting movies just to see something actually good for a change.

  • I love Kermode, but Source Code?

It's not clever AT ALL? It is borderline interesting with SUCH a bad ending.

  • @jamesthemod it was a pretty bad year for movies. source code was kind of that mid year hold you over til the real good movies come along movie. but the real good movies were sparse this year.

  • Souce code?

  • I'm pretty sure that Kermode had seen Submarine by this point. His failure to include that and his decision instead to include the pointlessly convoluted and highly contrived Julia's Eyes seems like a big mistake.

  • I loved source code. I watched it twice in a row non stop.

  • Benda Bilili is an astonishing story, but I think Senna is a better film

  • Senna is my favourite film is years and the best F1 driver ever and I'm sure he would be so proud of Burno right now after his excellent performance in the Italian GP adeus Ayrton

  • Senna should be #1 :3

  • it's Benda Bilili it's in the tags

  • I loved Source Code.

  • they meant to spell it: sauce code. hehehe

  • nvm, found the title of #1 in the kermode uncut blog comments, its "Benda bilili'"

  • Comment removed

  • that's mediocre

  • Hey all

This is how you spell Source Code <<.

Not Sauce Code (as funny as that would be, djeremybolton) or Souce Code as the video puts it.

My top film so far is Senna so its good to see MK choose it!

  • Senna was AMAZING :) also really enjoyed Source Code and Julia's Eyes

  • 1. Submarine

    2. HP 7 Part 2

    3. Super 8

    4. The adjustment bureau

    5. Kung fu panda 2

  • Who else thought Julia's Eyes was utter nonsense?

  • i really liked Source Code too, it was a cracking film and i also thought Senna was incredible, that was dramatic and emotional and very informative :D

  • Oh I know he hates it - a bit of sarcasm. I am surprised he rated it number 2 on his bottom 5 films so far

  • Where's Harry Potter on your list?

  • Submarine film of the year for me

  • Sauce Code was great. I loved the lemon twist at the end.

  • source code? seriously? that was such a disappointment :S

  • 1. The Tree Of Life

    2. Everything else

  • 13 Assassins, Tree of Life, Source Code, Senna, and RotPotA. I imagine Drive and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy will mix up the list. Both look like high class thrillers that I'd immensely enjoy.

  • Not everyone will agree that Source Code is one of the best movies this year? You kidding?

What confuses me is why Black Swan wasn't in the list. It was released this year. Why is he ignoring it?

  • @Fatpie42 He says at the start that he's not listing "Award Season Movies"

  • limitless is worth a watch if anyones interested

  • liked source code, but the ending spoilt it for me. Felt like the natural ending was the freeze frame bit, but that when it got shown to test audiences, it was seen as too much of a bitter bittersweet ending, so they changed it to suit mainstream taste. Not that the ending they've got now is a completely happy one, but it still feels tacked on rather than a natural conclusion to the film.

  • 1. Midnight In Paris

    2. Super 8

    3. 13 Assassins

    4. Source Code

    5. Beginners

  • I can't wait for his worst 5 of the year.

  • And here are the best ones you haven't seen yet :-)

The Tree of Life: meditative and deeply personal, but definitely not for everyone.

Arrietty: another great anime from the Ghibli studio.

Bull Head ("Rundskop"): great Belgian drama/thriller: see it!

Three ("Drei"): funny and entertaining German movie about a "menage à trois", directed by Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run, Perfume).

In a Better World: another stunning drama by Susanne Bier.

Rabat: nice Dutch road movie about 3 guys and a taxi.

  • I have seen number 1, 2 and 4 on this list, haven't heard of the other two but I'll go looking for them. I also saw Staff Benda Bilili live on stage a few months ago.

Apart from the award season movies (127 Hours, Somewhere, Black Swan, The King's Speech, Biutiful and True Grit), my favourite "mainstream" movies so far were X-Men First Class, Kung Fu Panda 2, Harry Potter 7b, Bridesmaids, Captain America and Super 8.

My favourites outside the main stream will be in my next post.

  • my top 5 so far...

    1. Rango

    2. Source Code

    3. Bridesmaids

    4. Adele Blanc-Sec

    5. Limitless

coming in closely at 6... animal kingdom

  • Source Code yea but pft the others.Source Code,Tree of Life,Rise of the Planet of the Apes,Kings Speech and Super 8.

  • The Fighter and Super 8 are the joint films of the year for 2011, with Insidious at 2nd and Source Code 3rd.

    Just my opinion!

  • HP 7B... :|

  • @TheInfinityParadox nah - wasn't that great - visually ok but hated the ending. Not enough story in it. I too however its not in Mark's top 5. Super 8 i'm surprised is not there.

  • Great choices Mark, you have chosen two of my favourites Senna and Source Code.

  • It looks like you're doing this video on the toilet.

  • hot sauce code?

  • Source Code above Super 8? Hrms... I don't know, man.

  • No love for Project Nim?

  • Best : Submarine and Hanna. Worst : Hangover Part 2 and Paul

  • ... Submarine?... although maybe that doesn't count - as it was shown at festivals in late 2010.

  • I don't think SC was very complex. I found it predictable. Well made, decent entertainment, but not top chart material.

  • 1) 13 assassins

the other four Los ojos de Julia, Source Code, Thor, Harry Potter 7.1

  • For me Docs shouldn't be included with Films.

    My top 5

    13 Assassins

    Confessions

    Animal Kingdom

    Mammuth

    Cell 211

Mentions: Mammuth, Neds, Hobo With A Shotgun, Source Code

  • @TheUltimoLee documentaries ARE films

  • @drplbiftin Their a separate entity, how can you judge non-fiction against fiction? completely different beast.

It's like comparing BBC news to Eastenders

  • @TheUltimoLee How can I judge them against each other? The same way it's possible to judge animated kids films against foreign arthouse films or sci-fi blockbusters against indie dramas. It doesn't matter if it's fiction or non-fiction, a film is judged on its own merits. Tell me this - would Waltz With Bashir be excluded from your lists because it's a documentary even though it has flights of fancy and is animated?

  • 1. Source Code

    2. Senna

    3. Thor

    4. Rise of the planet of the Apes

    5. Limitless

  • 1. Senna

    1-13 Assassins

As for others 127 hours,Rango,Arriety,Meeks Cutoff,Le quattro Volte,Love like posion

  • @Thecriticwithamouth

A Separation is definitely a candidate for becoming my movie of the year, I just haven't seen it yet. It was only released last Thursday in the Netherlands (to many five-star reviews, I might add).

  • Source Code was great! I don't get why not many would agree.

  • Hey Doc,

since you liked "Le Quattro Volte", do you know of an independent low-budget "silent" horror-thriller called "Soft For Digging". You should look it up.

  • Scouse Code.

  • 5. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2

    4. Bridesmaids

    3. Rise of the Planet of the Apes

    2. Senna

    1. Countdown to Zero

  • Thirteen Assassins was pretty much the only recent movie I saw which I thought was worth anything.

  • I haven't seen too many films this year, but so far Submarine is my favorite.

  • 5. 13 Assassins

    4. Win Win

    3. Rango

    2. Rise Of The Planet of The Apes

    1. Senna

  • Totally agree re: Le Quattro Volte.

Also agree with Senna. In fact, I'd also include TT3D and Life In A Day in my top 5.

    This year, documentary features FTW.

  • 5. Hobo With A Shotgun.

    4. Evangelion 2.0

    3. THOR.

    2. Deathly Hollows Part 2.

    1. 13 Assassins.

Got lots to see! I hope to see The Tree of Life and Don't Be Afriad of the Dark this month and a whole slew of good and bad things to watch.

  • X-Men First Class

    Thor

    Paul

i've not seen much else of note to be honest =/

still need to see tree of life and source code

  • I wonder what Mark's worst film of the year is so far???

  • This was recorded in june i take it?

  • julias eyes was great!

  • You spelled Source code wrong

  • Aw, no Submarine?

  • Woah, you're so wrong about Source Code, it was SO bad. Engaging for the first hour, then it deteriorates into predictability and had a happy ending which made me cringe. Shame, I had high hopes for it as I had enjoyed Moon.

  • 1. trust

    2. the beaver

    3. super 8

    4. x-men: first class

    5. hanna

  • Source Code

    Paul

    Fast Five

    The Mechanic

    Limitless

Probably my favourites of the year so far.

  • What, no Transformers 3? :)

  • @mrmitchell78 That will be in next weeks. :D

  • @mrmitchell78 & no HP spoilers either!

Oh well....There's a new Twiglet coming soon right? Should end up with a dozen Kermode awards or so!

  • @mrmitchell78 it's coming next week ;)

  • @mrmitchell78

Kermode hates Transformers, so no. It's one of my favorites though.

  • Wait, the actress from Julia's Eyes is called Bellend?

  • Why kermode always wears the same suit, same shirt and same tie?

  • 1. The Tree of Life

    2. 13 Assassins

    3. Poetry (was disappointed that the good doctor failed to review this on its release)

    4. Cold Fish

    5. Cave of Forgotten Dreams

  • Comment removed

  • hmm..I wonder if The Hangover Part Deux and The industrial point will be on his top 5 worst of the year so far...

  • My Top 5:

    1. Super 8

    2. X-Men: First Class

    3. Insidious

    4. The Beaver

    5. Source Code

  • Submarine

    Senna

    Bridesmaids

    Super 8

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2

But I really wanted to see Julia's Eyes; but only having one eye myself, I'm just not sure I could have got through it.

  • Needs more 13 Assassins.

  • LOVE Source Code!

  • Loving the Pan's Labyrinth poster. :-)

  • I had the biggest sigh of relief the moment you mentioned Source Code.

  • Seeing as I put Source Code in my top 20 favourite films of the last decade, I'm not surprised to see it in this list. Brilliant film!

  • @HotDogMarchant Last decade??

  • @Neonman78 Oh yeah, I said last decade because I named it as an honourable mention in Mark's blog where he names his favourite 10 films in the past 10 years, while he's been doing the show. I forgot we're in a new decade! Aha.

  • The best film of the year is "The Beaver"

  • ok, i haven't seen one of those, but I will

  • i was really surprised by source code. i expected it to be cliche and something id seen before, but it was actually really intense and well done

  • the quality of the videos is getting better and better...
