2001 was a terrible year for cinema...Hannah was great, and I thought The Hangover Part II was reasonably enjoyable even though it was incredibly crass...But that's it. At least Django Unchained is coming out this year...in December...Guess I'll have to wait for another year of boring, uninteresting movies just to see something actually good for a change.
@jamesthemod it was a pretty bad year for movies. source code was kind of that mid year hold you over til the real good movies come along movie. but the real good movies were sparse this year.
I'm pretty sure that Kermode had seen Submarine by this point. His failure to include that and his decision instead to include the pointlessly convoluted and highly contrived Julia's Eyes seems like a big mistake.
Senna is my favourite film is years and the best F1 driver ever and I'm sure he would be so proud of Burno right now after his excellent performance in the Italian GP adeus Ayrton
i really liked Source Code too, it was a cracking film and i also thought Senna was incredible, that was dramatic and emotional and very informative :D
13 Assassins, Tree of Life, Source Code, Senna, and RotPotA. I imagine Drive and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy will mix up the list. Both look like high class thrillers that I'd immensely enjoy.
liked source code, but the ending spoilt it for me. Felt like the natural ending was the freeze frame bit, but that when it got shown to test audiences, it was seen as too much of a bitter bittersweet ending, so they changed it to suit mainstream taste. Not that the ending they've got now is a completely happy one, but it still feels tacked on rather than a natural conclusion to the film.
I have seen number 1, 2 and 4 on this list, haven't heard of the other two but I'll go looking for them. I also saw Staff Benda Bilili live on stage a few months ago.
Apart from the award season movies (127 Hours, Somewhere, Black Swan, The King's Speech, Biutiful and True Grit), my favourite "mainstream" movies so far were X-Men First Class, Kung Fu Panda 2, Harry Potter 7b, Bridesmaids, Captain America and Super 8.
My favourites outside the main stream will be in my next post.
@TheInfinityParadox nah - wasn't that great - visually ok but hated the ending. Not enough story in it. I too however its not in Mark's top 5. Super 8 i'm surprised is not there.
@TheUltimoLee How can I judge them against each other? The same way it's possible to judge animated kids films against foreign arthouse films or sci-fi blockbusters against indie dramas. It doesn't matter if it's fiction or non-fiction, a film is judged on its own merits. Tell me this - would Waltz With Bashir be excluded from your lists because it's a documentary even though it has flights of fancy and is animated?
A Separation is definitely a candidate for becoming my movie of the year, I just haven't seen it yet. It was only released last Thursday in the Netherlands (to many five-star reviews, I might add).
since you liked "Le Quattro Volte", do you know of an independent low-budget "silent" horror-thriller called "Soft For Digging". You should look it up.
Woah, you're so wrong about Source Code, it was SO bad. Engaging for the first hour, then it deteriorates into predictability and had a happy ending which made me cringe. Shame, I had high hopes for it as I had enjoyed Moon.
@Neonman78 Oh yeah, I said last decade because I named it as an honourable mention in Mark's blog where he names his favourite 10 films in the past 10 years, while he's been doing the show. I forgot we're in a new decade! Aha.

It's not clever AT ALL? It is borderline interesting with SUCH a bad ending.

Not Sauce Code (as funny as that would be, djeremybolton) or Souce Code as the video puts it.
My top film so far is Senna so its good to see MK choose it!

What confuses me is why Black Swan wasn't in the list. It was released this year. Why is he ignoring it?

And here are the best ones you haven't seen yet :-)
The Tree of Life: meditative and deeply personal, but definitely not for everyone.
Arrietty: another great anime from the Ghibli studio.
Bull Head ("Rundskop"): great Belgian drama/thriller: see it!
Three ("Drei"): funny and entertaining German movie about a "menage à trois", directed by Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run, Perfume).
In a Better World: another stunning drama by Susanne Bier.
Rabat: nice Dutch road movie about 3 guys and a taxi.
