The wood you are thinking of is Balsa, not Pine, by the way (And even then, you can't really 'cut' Balsa with a BUTTER KNIFE). Pine (depending on the specific type) a soft wood, yes, but nowhere near as soft as you seem to think it is.

While I know one cannot go out killing with it, Practicing with it suffices. If one does not have the proper trianing and instruction, then owning A Katana is a gross insult to Japanese custom, traditions and honor.

Now that Samurai is extinct, I say only those with the PROPER instruction should be allowed to own one. But, I recognize that I do not have the right to dictate such things, that they are really not to blame, but Japan itself is for allowing foreigners without The Proper trianing to simply BUY their greatest treasure.
