You got to remember this. 99% of British people, and I include myself, never wanted the army in Northern Ireland. We had no problem with the people of Ireland. It was just consecutive British Governments could not be seen to be defeated by the IRA. So the IRA didn't grind the Government down, just made the whole mess last about 20 years longer than it needed to!
