The only Roy Rogers I ever ate at was located on Route 20 in Westfield MA, near the Westfield/West Springfield town line. It wasn't bad. I'm not sure if that restaurant is even there anymore, or even if there's a building there (I haven't been to Westfield since 2000; I live in Rhode Island now).
I live in NC, we used to have Hardee's fried chicken too in the 1990s, but then they stopped selling it here in this state because of a place called Bojangles, They sell fried chicken too. Both Cajun and Southern, and Roasted too. I always thought Hardees sold good chicken and the cole slaw was just as good as KFC.
Bojangles is the bomb in the mountains...but i went to a hardees in morganton looking to get some chicken on the weekend of the Bristol Race in March, and all they had was they're usual stuff. Plus some new freaky mexican food chain called Jose's Tacos or somethin. I got a burger tho, it was good.
We HATE Hardees! This company ruined The ROY ROGERS Company. Now they have the nerve to call ROYS fried chicken--Hardees fried chicken! They should have changed all the Hardees restaurants to ROY ROGERS Family Restaurants. The american people would have accepted this change.
@jfountaine67 Some of the Hardees here in NC have Mexican food, Those have a big Star on the sign. The only thing Hardees really sells well are their breakfast biscuits. Plus all the old people go there for senoir citizens coffee. They used to could smoke in the restaurants too but they banned smoking an all hardees in 2000. Then at the beginning of this year 2010 they banned smoking from ALL restaurants and bars. I can't get around smoke so I didn't care
Man,i miss this restaurant.I used to live walking distance from the nearest Roy Rogers till it was converted to a McDonalds restaurant.I haven't ate from RR in Maryland or anywhere since the 90s.
Wow really? So they're disappearing even in NYC too eh? Yeah I could've sworn that in 2007 there were more Roy Rogers locations in NYC than now as I always happen to end up in the one at 401 7th Ave nowadays.
Here in the Philadelphia area, Hardee's bought out Roy Rogers and changed them all to the Hardee's brand.
In less than a year, they had to change all of them back to Roy Rogers restaurants, because business went down the tubes due to Hardee's reputation for poor-tasting food.
roys is legendary in this area. eastern/souther pa. i drive to the turnpike to get it, but it's closed down for now. There arent any roy's still in philly right?
Hardee's also took Burger Chef away from us - and still owns the rights to the BC trademarks. Roy Rogers restaurants are still around, but mainly in DE & MD, and on the PA & NJ Turnpikes.
I forgot to mention that I contacted Hardee's with the idea to resurrect the Burger Chef chain in the Philly area where there are no Hardee's anymore. They weren't the slight bit interested, but their rights expire in 2008. Hope they don't renew!
Yeah, and Hardee's added an impostor Big Shef burger to their menu in select markets in order to retain those rights. I too hope those rights are allowed to lapse; as someone who never got to experience Burger Chef, I'd love to see it make a healthy comeback. Competition is a good thing, both for businesses and consumers.
Hardee's also assimilated Carl's Jr. as well.

It's a shame Roy Rogers can really only be found at freeway rest stops now.

Well, I went down to see the Rio Grande Airshow in August (which was awesome) and I ate at the Roy's on the GSP. It was pretty good.

I make a point of having lunch at Roy Rogers whenever I visit NYC (I am in Philly so a 2-hour bus ride is not bad if you ask me).

Only one left, sadly, right outside the 7th Avenue exit of Penn Station. The one inside Penn is being converted to KFC.

My closest Roy's fix was closed down in October 2007, but is expected to reopen in May 2008.
It was at the Allentown rest stop on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
The entire rest stop (which was built in 1955) was torn down and is in the process of being completely rebuilt.
Can't wait!
OldsVistaCruiser 4 years ago
They used to have HoJo's at those stops, but I don't suppose people today like sitting around for a half hour waiting for their food.
