I'd like to see, just once, a day without officials. All games scheduled for that day are purely one team against the other and each team calls its own plays and the other teams plays at the same time.
See how much fun it is to watch that game, or if there is any game to have fun watching.
@depant77 And what's your point? Is anyone advocating not using officials? Or are you advocating never calling officials up on crap calls and poor behavior?
Well first Dave Pallone u blew call u know and u did hit rose first should u had over would u had said safe if could reverse it.... as for replacein strikin Umps well i agree some were threatin n called scabs . And other who walk in replacement Made good umpires also...But rose deserve be in Hall of fame anyway.
Aren't you the one that refused to award first base to Bill Russell after he had his finger broke by a wild pitch? They didn't fire you because you were gay but because you were blind. Not your fault they hadn't invented Lasik surgery yet.
Great video, and great quality of human being for Mr Pallone to let the whole world about his sexual preferences (I saw the message too); completely agree he made the right call; fans will ever be obnoxious, specially when a call (regardless if it was the right one, like this case) does affect the local team.
What a wild scene that was! I think I was watching that game live when this went down. I do admit that a player should never put their hands on an umpire, but I think he may have been provoked a little. But that crowd went absolutely nuts after Rose was ejected. I can see why you left the game though.
Dave, you are to be applauded for your decision to come out. That said, you're still a scab. Sorry.
You talk in your video about having to make decisions and living with them. You decided to be in the closet while you pursued an umpiring career. That wasn't a decision you should have had to make, but an understandable one.
But you also crossed the picket line to further that career. You have to live with that, too, Dave.
In the end, being gay was not a choice. But being a scab was.
You blew the call by delaying it. You can act as a martyr and pretend to be concerned with "fairness", but you still blew it. And it looks like you touched him. "He actually use a finger nail clipper to scratch his face after the game so it would look like I did!!" Yeah, I'm sure you were right there when he did, so of course you're not lying.
With all due respect, I read your book. What you did was a moral sin by crossing picket lines. Did you think you and Fred Brocklander were goign to be treated nicely for what you two did? I was a former umpire on the Division I college level and was approached to be a replacement umpire in the past. I had to refuse, especially being a union worker, myself.
Did you deserve to get shoved by Pete Rose? But crossing picket lines, one should expect tp be ostracized and treated poorly.
you think it was moral for them to give me an ultimatium...take the job now or you will never make it, after spending 8years making basically no money and trying to get to the top...no way...
@iflyacrj why do you blindly follow a union are you not able to stand on your own or do you need to hide behind mama's apron. Unions were needed about 50-75 years ago but today they have died. I have seen unions do more harm to the workers and the company than I have any good thing come from them.
p.s. I think you mean mortal sin and crossing a picket line is a freedom of choice.
@iflyacrj While this may not be the right forum, if people are willing to strike and risk losing their jobs then replacements should be allowed to earn a living - albeit temporarily. To ostracize someone because they seek a job and you choose (operative word) to strike then look in the mirror.
@iflyacrj This ridiculous notion that anyone should walk the picket line because some corrupted bought and sold union rep tells them to is beyond ignorant and plain stupid. I remember a friend of mine who worked a supermarket went on strike over whatever the issues were. The best his union would give him were daily supplies of 'Dunkin Donuts' and hot cocoa. Meanwhile, teh union putzed around over a year and because of dopes like you buying into the "scab" logic, he lost his home. Get a brain!
*all* fans are obnoxious. it's mob mentality at any stadium. this same thing happened at Wrigley in '91; look up Andre Dawson/Joe West bat incident and you watch the fans do the same thing with their cups and whatnot.
See, this is where I have a problem with umpires. He made the right call, yes. He probably didn't scratch Rose, and he did the right thing by not shoving him back. However, this video and the description is obviously him milking it for all he can. Sure, Rose was fined $10,000, but he's a millionaire and legend; I doubt he cared. The game is not and has never been about the umpires. Umpires constantly do things, as if it's about them, for attention. Thanks for uploading nonetheless.
The fans were only unruly because the ump failed on two different calls. 1) He did not make the call till super late. 2) He did not call interference on the first base coach. I think any true fan would be upset in this situation. I don't blame Pallone for leaving. I would have gotten outta there myself. And I don't blame Pete for being as mad as he was.
@Andy4Cincy Andy, since you have never umpired before, you have a very bias opinion about what really happened. Also it sounds to me that you were listening to the broadcasters about the interference call...also what do you mean by super late...was it a minute two minutes or was it really a second or two, and do you know if i was yelling something about the play...answer those ?s for me...thanks
@davepallonedotcom Are you sure I have never umpired before? You never asked, and I never said. I'll answer my own question. I have never umpired before (though I would like to). HOWEVER, I have refereed before, which is basically another name for an umpire. So I do know what it is like to make the decisions and face scrutiny at times. And by late I mean 1 or 2 seconds, but in baseball, sometimes 1 or 2 seconds is all that it takes. I'm not quite sure what the second question you asked has to...
@davepallonedotcom ...do with my original comment. And I'm also not sure why you are getting all defensive. I didn't disagree with the call (and I'm a Reds fan.) I simply said you made the call late and missed the interference call (which, yes, the announcers said that, but that is because it interference.) I also said I don't blame Pete for being upset (he deserved to be tossed) and I don't blame you for leaving. That is all I said.
@Andy4Cincy the question was do you know if i was yelling something during the play....and the answer would be no you don't because it would be hard for you to know...and if you think it was interference please explain the rule for me.... and fyi, it was NOT interference.... and i am not getting defensive however i am befuddled how most fans tend to know more about rules and what really happens on the field than those of us who are trained to know
@drugssuck1991 It was a very unusual game. He actually should have been thrown out of the game sometime in the 6 inning by Eric Greg...guess it wasn't meant to be..
Just curious, have you ever talked to Pete since this event took place? I always wondered if you both had a chance to discuss it. Why did you decide to quit umpiring? Do you miss it?
Actually we did speak..it was on the anniversary of the game, 10 years later on my radio show...had a huge audience..I do miss umpiring but love my life now. Baseball didn't have room for an umpire who was gay at the time. thanks for your comment
Thats great that he came on your radio show. How did it go? Did you guys get along? Do you have an audio of it that you can post? Glad you are enjoying your life. You were a good umpire. Any chance of coming back?
Dave made the right call. He had to wait until Wilson got to first before he called him safe. He had to wait until Esasky touched first before calling an out. until one of those things happen, there's no call to be made. It's Esasky's fault the runner scored. He should have thrown home.
I've been watching baseball for as long as I can remember and McCarver is a complete idiot.
Umpires are trained to pause to process what they saw before making a signal. Hard to tell from this video, but it doesn't appear this was overly late. It's Esasky's job to go ahead and make the play at home, not wait around to see what the umpire will call.
Hey Pallone, you're a piece of work.........try humbling YOURSELF

He made a very late call, and he poked Pete Rose's face. These two things are crystal clear. Oh, and he crossed picket lines too.
