I don't think anybody's mistaking him for George Jones, dude. This tune cleverly combines elements of different musical styles, with Country being the most difficult to predict, yet obviously present, element. It's not straight Country music- it's Cool As F**k music.
Who would've guessed that when two of the greatest r?&b/funk singers and minds of all time got together that they'd make a country song? Well, country/funk hybrid to be exact but still.
I was the soul brother, but when Mike and Mike,my rock and roll friends, and me drove their pick up to a local park off of Lawrence Expwy in Santa Clara one night, just south of Pruneridge, this song was on the radio. As Stevie sang those opening verses,I remember I just stared at the plumed roach clip hanging from the back of Woodfork's straw cowboy hat!-That was late 1980.
This song is still HOT! Charlie Wilson singing in the background...makes this song even more phenomenal. However, I do think they were playing around in the studio when they had the idea to record this song.
Yeah,@HARMONY7100, U can hear Charlie real strong on the choruses & on the bridge of this KILLER funk/country/hard rock hybrid jam. I remember this when i was 6 yrs. old. GOOD QUALITY music. One of my favorite tunes from "WONDERMAN".& u know where Charlie got his FUNK from....STEVIE. That had to be a dream come true for Charlie, 'cause Stevie was/is his idol. They BOTH made that cut funky. A CLASSIC !!!!
This is how a country song should sound. My favorite song from this album and this is coming from somebody that use to hate country music. Stevie is simply proving he's the greatest. Ronnie and Charlie Wilson backup (Gap Band), makes sense, they're from Oklahoma. The first cowboys were Black.
Stevie hit #11 in Billboard, 3-7-81. Featurin' backup vocals by Charlie and Ronnie Wilson, of the Gap Band. Love Hank Devito's steel guitar on it. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!
yep i remember this song.. that'z just how amazin artistz can be even in RARE FORM..... Stevie got it goin on even doin a country accent..lol.. someone else who soundz great doin the country accent is Lionel Richie.. when they can step a little outside the norm of what how theyre use to singn and pull it off, just meanz they can really SANG.. Love it..
Wow, thank you so much for posting this song. "Country funk"...that's how I described it to everyone when I told them it was Stevie Wonder, but they didn't believe me until I showed them the yellow and brown "Tamla" 45 rpm I had of this song and they read it for themselves. It's just another example of his genius!
Wow! I almost forgot about this song by Stevie Wonder. I was in high school when this was released. I thought it was released in the spring of 1981, but I guess I was wrong if it was released ini 1980. Great video! Thanks for uploading it here!

Either way, my Stevie is the only person who can fuse soul and country so well!
I ain't gonna stand for the fact that there are 3 dislikers of this song. Love Hank DeVito's steel guitar on it. Billboard's #73 hit of '81. God bless ya, Ronnie and Charlie Wilson. Hugs to ya both!
RFEEDIFY, ME TOO THAT'S WHERE I HEARD THE SONG. I'M A STEVIE WONDER FAN AND NEVER KNEW STEVIE WONDER SANG THIS SONG. I FOUND OUT LAST NIGHT WHEN I HEARD IT ON THE RADIO.(103.5)

This song is very high on my list of best songs ever written and performed. Very few songs can combine the individual elements like this one, yet have the feel of this song. Even Clapton recognized the genius of this song as he did a remake. I remember seeing an interview with Eric and he said his band couldn't get the song to feel right. We're talking about Clapton's band! Finally, they got it down and did the remake, which is good too.
Awesome, Awesome job Stevie! Thanks for posting this.
The word genius is banded around these days like confetti. But real genius is the man you are listening to, how one man can deliver the kind of excellence over such a long period of time for us all to enjoy beggers belief. A true great in the history of modern music.
The first time I heard this song, I was WTH!!!! Has Stevie gone country on us. But the more I listened to it, I love it. I love the country music that is integrated into this song. This goes to show how much creativity Stevie had and STILL HAS!!!!!!
@RSSFeedify LMAO! I just saw that same episode a few days ago....the part when Bernie was in the shower. I heard the song in the background and thought it was kinda funky! So I looked it up!!
@rawmac7 Yes this is the whole song. The end of "I Ain't Gonna Stand For It" on the "Hotter Than July" album ends with an abrupt cut right into the next track "As If You Read My Mind"
@AceWand Nice to know I'm not the only one who didn't like that song. Luckily, Stevie is good enough to evercome that song - but I still have the bad flashbacks! lol
Country and R&B in the same song , only 2 people in the world can pull that off. That would be Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles. And both of them are bilnd. How Ironic/coincadintal?
@sesamestreet2 I just never really got into his music. I only actually like 3 or 4 songs of his enough to want to own them. But, I do think he is incredibly talented. I think "I just called to say I love you" was a bad song that was overplayed--it sort of ruined him for me. No offense intended to anyone. I still can admit he is great, though.
@vsbp Am I understanding you? Are U saying this piece of classic music is trash?? You have got to be kidding me!! This man never makes anything bad!! This is classic Stevie!! You can't get any better than this because he can sing any genre and still make it look good, Okaaaay!!!!!
@noonic23 Charlie Wilson isn't on the backgrounds for "All I Do". This was the only song on the album he did sing on with his brother Ronnie. The other singers who backed Stevie on "All I Do" besides Michael Jackson included Eddie Levert and Walter Williams from The O'Jays and Betty Wright.
@blackwaxjh I saw this on wikipedia that he did backgrounding for stevie on a couple of songs including this one and All I do. but wikipedia might be wrong who's knows? but I know for a fact about Michael because he talked about it in a interview clip..But thanks for clearing that one up..
I didn't know Charlie Wilson was in this until I saw this on youtube. Interesting. I always wondered who backed him up in this song. Now that I know this, I can hear it and listen for him. It's definitely Uncle Charlie
i use 2 love this song when i was in the 6th grade and when i read the credits 4 the album i noticed the gap band charlie wilson and his brothers were on the background of this song and if u blast it u can hear charlie wilson good
man i remember this jam when i was like 8 yrs old. now that im older and hear the mix of country and soul this shit is like brilliant. stevie way out there a head of his time. nobody dont even try stuff like this no more.
just bought this album on vinyl. Everyone should do that, it brings the summer into your speakers. An amazing album, included one of the best songs written by stevie wonder, love the funky base.
It just proves that musical genius is present in every genre---I wish he had gone a bit further and done an album of country-soul tunes, ala Ray Charles---his already-stellar reputation would have been evern greater!
Hit #4 soul, #11 pop, #20 AC in Billboard. Charlie AND Ronnie Wilson of the Gap Band sang backup on it. In return, Stevie sang background on the Gap's song 'Someday', a tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. God bless!
Qu'est CE Que J'Ai ECRI, Qui si mal fel Vous, hommes si, C'Est CE Québec enttendès Vous Pas n'est CE! Afraid qu'aient c'eux qu'ont éspérent, BABY, Alors Que maha s'est meme!
Sometimes this song gets played on The Bernie Mac Show, I never would have guessed in a million years that it belonged to Stevie Wonder! Awesome song.
Why are people arguing about whether there's a country vibe or not?
It's totally obvious in the verses Stevie is paying a nod to country music. There's a pedal steel, country piano licks and Stevie signing in a southern drawl, but it's still done in his own inimitable way. Like someone else says, just shows his genius.
Remember that Ray Charles once did a country western album. People are so quick to pigeonhole and stay closed-minded.
This is a great song about standing up for what you believe in. By the way, nothing wrong with country music. What's promoted by the corporate world doesn't touch the heart of true country, just the same as rap and r&b categories.
man..this song brings back so many memories...me and my brother thought this song was so funny...we used to just run around the house singing...we couldn't really understand the versus..but when the part "i ain't gonna stand for it" we just start screaming that part..lol good times....
My aunt played this song when I was little and I heard this song on The Bernie Mac Show and I forgot what episode lol

@RSSFeedify LMAO! I just saw that same episode a few days ago....the part when Bernie was in the shower. I heard the song in the background and thought it was kinda funky! So I looked it up!!

Is this the whole song? thx

@rawmac7 Yes this is the whole song. The end of "I Ain't Gonna Stand For It" on the "Hotter Than July" album ends with an abrupt cut right into the next track "As If You Read My Mind"

@LawnboyBaker Man you are right! "Music of My Mind" is incredible. Superwoman is Stevie's Best song in my opinion. It blows my mind for real.

@AceWand Nice to know I'm not the only one who didn't like that song. Luckily, Stevie is good enough to evercome that song - but I still have the bad flashbacks! lol

A very versatile singer Stevie is!
MariaGarcia281 1 year ago
Country and R&B in the same song , only 2 people in the world can pull that off. That would be Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles. And both of them are bilnd. How Ironic/coincadintal?
MississippiRed1 1 year ago
I'm not a Stevie fan. But I did (do) love this song.
peeje852 1 year ago
@peeje852 Just out of curiosity...how are you not a Stevie fan?
sesamestreet2 1 year ago
@sesamestreet2 I just never really got into his music. I only actually like 3 or 4 songs of his enough to want to own them. But, I do think he is incredibly talented. I think "I just called to say I love you" was a bad song that was overplayed--it sort of ruined him for me. No offense intended to anyone. I still can admit he is great, though.
peeje852 1 year ago
@vsbp Am I understanding you? Are U saying this piece of classic music is trash?? You have got to be kidding me!! This man never makes anything bad!! This is classic Stevie!! You can't get any better than this because he can sing any genre and still make it look good, Okaaaay!!!!!

And Charlie Wilson and Michael Jackson did the background for all I do
noonic23 1 year ago 5
@noonic23 where did you get that info from
MrLAEL36 1 year ago
@noonic23 Charlie Wilson isn't on the backgrounds for "All I Do". This was the only song on the album he did sing on with his brother Ronnie. The other singers who backed Stevie on "All I Do" besides Michael Jackson included Eddie Levert and Walter Williams from The O'Jays and Betty Wright.
blackwaxjh 1 year ago
@blackwaxjh I saw this on wikipedia that he did backgrounding for stevie on a couple of songs including this one and All I do. but wikipedia might be wrong who's knows? but I know for a fact about Michael because he talked about it in a interview clip..But thanks for clearing that one up..
noonic23 1 year ago
@vsbp we obviously dont listen to the same music ;)

How do you mix country and funk? this dont make no sense how creative stevie is lol

I didn't know Charlie Wilson was in this until I saw this on youtube. Interesting. I always wondered who backed him up in this song. Now that I know this, I can hear it and listen for him. It's definitely Uncle Charlie

God bless!

That is actually Charlie Wilson (of the Gap Band) singing background.

Sometimes this song gets played on The Bernie Mac Show, I never would have guessed in a million years that it belonged to Stevie Wonder! Awesome song.
MrsGuevara 1 year ago
