The BEST way to recycle plastics, is to AVOID consuming plastic products. Usually they constitute the recipients of such products. There are alternatives as glass, metal and bio-degradable materials. ALSO, to better RECYCLE one can decrease the consuming level from EXAGGERATED and FUTILE to NECESSARY and PRAGMATIC.

We can all start by never using another shampoo bottle again. Use no-poo. Google it for more info. Basically, you dissolve 1 Tbsp of baking soda in 1 cup water, massage it into your scalp for 1 minute, rinse, repeat with the baking soda replaced by vinegar. Better for your hair, and cheap, too!
Next, stop smoking. Save money, your health, and the Earth!
Also, there are biodegradable "plastics" made from corn. Look at Stalkmarket, for example. Check out alternatives!
Why dont the Large corporations like Pepsi/Coca-Cola/Disney pitch in and start trying to clean it up,,,,?? Sure would be a nice gesture....I bet the Japanese might like to help too..:-P

@thea682 Exactly, I am in shock that previous generations have let this happen, why the whole "green trend" now? Why did the masses not do these things before? Was it ignorance or just sheer greed and materialism?
People where kept in the dark about stuff like this and nowadays we get to see this because we have the internet. But i'll bet my head on it that the most gross industrial crimes are still not known and maybe our children will say the same about us.
I'm really sick of how people have reached some sort of consensus on, "Well, there's no point in cleaning it up now..." I understand that the main focus should be further prevention, and I understand that it's a LOT of trash. No, it probably won't be able to be cleaned up in my lifetime, BUT to write it off completely (and for the last ten years even) and not even make an attempt to clean it up is just ignorant IMO. I'm so sick of humanity's apathy, ugh.
Nobody enjoys shitting on Americans more than me but this is a global problem. This whole 'out of sight out of mind' mentality exists in Canada and all over the world and is at the root of the problem here. In regards to a clean up effort can it even be done? The smaller estimates put this thing at twice the size of Texas it would take decades, not taking into account the amount of new trash that arrives there every day.
@NibiruGroup that's not fair and I don't think it is true. I am from the Netherlands and I am amazed about the amount of plastic garbage that is lying around everywhere and washed ashore on our beaches. It is a global waste problem. The use of biodegradable plastics would be a good start to overcome this problem but I'm afraid at lot of irreversible harm has already been done.
this is why we hate Americans, fuck you all and don't try ti blame your bullshit on the 'rest' of the world, with comments like "the whole world over" it is YOUR rubbish. YOURS. You are complete a-holes. How dare you blame the rest of the world for you shit.
like your "World" Series Baseball. It's all American Rubbish.
YOU are not the entire world, but oh how you like to think you are.
@t0n3s1 Dude, calm down. As for all the garbage we, the human race, are all to blame. I understand you dont like Americans, I'm American and I dont really like it...
@t0n3s1 I have to agree with everyone else. You can blame America for a lot of things, but this is not one of them. Pollution as a general is a problem every single person on this planet is contributing to. Your correlation to the "World Series" is a poor example for your point. Baseball is a sport, and something people can voluntarily participate in. Littering however, is something that almost everyone has done at some point or another in their life, voluntary and involuntary alike.
Tht poor turtle an all those other animals they are the ones really suffering frm this not us not yet anyway but considering tht before long the ocean will be our only source of water thn I think we can fully understand how badly we really fuked up here
This life style is part of the Pagans life style that GOD warren is about and now look at the results. When I see this it makes me sick because it's horrible, why did man discover plastic knew it would become a problem in the future for us humans. Mans GREED has the control of his livelihood, all he think of is how to make more money and dont care about distroying this earth and the people in it. We must clean this mess up and it will take forever to do it so we can continue living here.
Just think we paid BIG companies to do away our trash from our homes and this is what they had done with it. I thought they had some kind of resource of some kind to dissolve it and I never gave it a thought because it was someone else job to take care of these type of things. Now that I seen this I will buy more in cartons, I buy milk, eggs in a carton or box now but there are other things like can goods and you can buy the in cartons also I seen it in WalMart. Man in the mirror is me. PEACE!
Why do you think the american indians (only true americans) where trying to kill and run off all those euro-trash immigrants from THERE land?.... NOW YOU GET IT?
mrsmelzbad - Im Native Cherokee/Comanche Indian...you have a point here. Im also a fan of Michael Jackson most Native are, he speaks of human nature and how it would never mix with mother earth. We as humans must return back to living from the earth, she is our mother and what comes from her is good for us to live healthier. Man poison her with his chemicals, ideas and very soon she will speak out across this planet. When she cant stomche anymore she will reject it and cause problems
Even if you recycle that doesn't guarantee it is actually being recycled. It might be just thrown in a land fill. These hypocrits are drinking bottled water on this little field trip. LOL
You can make a difference. Recycle EVERYTHING! Use recyclable grocery bags. Refuse plastic whenever possible and demand that retailers find alternative ways to package and bag our goods. This can be done and the damage can be undone but it is ALL of our responsibilty. It is humanity that made this mess and it must be humanity that fixes it, or there will someday be no humanity, just a dead planet.
Thanx TWB56. I have re-cycled for years, and now we can recycle plastics. The HEMP industry was suashed by DuPont! One can manufacture anything from hemp, which is bio-degradable! It is up to us!!!
Hempen plastics are 100% biodegradable whilst being less harmful to the environment to grow and harvest compared to the extraction and refining process of oil.
if cannabis was legalized then we would see the emergence of a multi-billion dollar hemp industry that would play an vital role in transitioning from hydrocarbon based economy to a self-sustaining and ecologically restorative carbohydrate economy.
Till then, i wouldn't count on our current neocorporate government paving the way to restore our economy.
@vujade1 The entities who CONtrol the planet are not benevolent towards anything. They rip and tear to remain on top. They are very sick mfers. But the problem is most of the sheeple worship them b/c that is what they have been taught in JEW-SKOOL, and by the Jew-CONtrolled media. When you begin to understand mind control, you will begin to see how we have given away all of our power....and SOULS!
@nickatnoon61 You can't use hemp you hippie weirdo!! Then the kids will realize that you can smoke the pot and be less aggressive, and not have a rely on pharmaceutical companies to make them feel better, and the lumber industry will lose money cause you can make more paper with less hemp. Then where will all those billionaires get their money huh hippie?! They DESERVE to be RICH BEYOND POUR WILDEST DREAMS!! (dripping in sarcasm)
@samuelgordn21 No shit guy. That is why I said (dripping in sarcasm) because all the people that oppose hemp try to pull the mary-ja-wanna card. dummy.
This is absolute proof that we are destroying the eco-system with the unbelievable amount of packaging we deal with in everything we buy. It is unconscionable to continue using the amount and types of plastics that are our mainstay in todays retail environment. It is incumbent upon ALL of us to do something about this.
There actually has been a break through in biodegradable plastic that is made from corn oils. The significance of this is that sugars in the oil are able to be eaten by bacteria making it last only about 1/4 as long as traditional plastic packaging and far less toxic too. Hopefully they start using it soon.
Bill you are completely wrong about that, Illegal dumping goes on all the time. But a large part of the floating plastic is from litter the way you said. If you go on NJDEP web site you will see all the citations issued in just the past year for every form of water pollution you can imagine. Many ships constantly dump all kinds of chemical, hydrocarbons, and solid wastes all over the Oceans. Had a friend who used to work at a factory ordered to dump industrial wastes at night into the river.
There is no better place for industry, corporations, governments and businesses to dump it,s free no one will catch you and profits will increase. Why pay dumping fee,s.
No amount of education will stop this it is all about profits. Recycling is something industry hates. The nice thing is someday we will be able to walk across the ocean on a plastic
matt. Some states require core exchange for glass and plastic bottles but most industry lobbies against this.
People can't change unless they reach a certain point meaning where it is almost to late to save anything...how sad this species is...how unfortune and grateful I am to be apart of this.

Zoloft61 1 year ago
this is why we hate Americans, fuck you all and don't try ti blame your bullshit on the 'rest' of the world, with comments like "the whole world over" it is YOUR rubbish. YOURS. You are complete a-holes. How dare you blame the rest of the world for you shit.
like your "World" Series Baseball. It's all American Rubbish.
YOU are not the entire world, but oh how you like to think you are.
t0n3s1 1 year ago
@t0n3s1 Dude, calm down. As for all the garbage we, the human race, are all to blame. I understand you dont like Americans, I'm American and I dont really like it...
whiteblazejunky 1 year ago
@t0n3s1 I have to agree with everyone else. You can blame America for a lot of things, but this is not one of them. Pollution as a general is a problem every single person on this planet is contributing to. Your correlation to the "World Series" is a poor example for your point. Baseball is a sport, and something people can voluntarily participate in. Littering however, is something that almost everyone has done at some point or another in their life, voluntary and involuntary alike.

NOW YOU GET IT?
mrsmelzbad 2 years ago
mrsmelzbad - Im Native Cherokee/Comanche Indian...you have a point here.

LOL

lewisbail01 2 years ago
You can make a difference. Recycle EVERYTHING! Use recyclable grocery bags. Refuse plastic whenever possible and demand that retailers find alternative ways to package and bag our goods. This can be done and the damage can be undone but it is ALL of our responsibilty. It is humanity that made this mess and it must be humanity that fixes it, or there will someday be no humanity, just a dead planet.
TWB56 2 years ago
Thanx TWB56. I have re-cycled for years, and now we can recycle plastics. The HEMP industry was suashed by DuPont! One can manufacture anything from hemp, which is bio-degradable! It is up to us!!!
nickatnoon61 2 years ago 26
That's right!
Hempen plastics are 100% biodegradable whilst being less harmful to the environment to grow and harvest compared to the extraction and refining process of oil.
ReallyPsilly 2 years ago
@nickatnoon61,
if cannabis was legalized then we would see the emergence of a multi-billion dollar hemp industry that would play an vital role in transitioning from hydrocarbon based economy to a self-sustaining and ecologically restorative carbohydrate economy.

This is absolute proof that we are destroying the eco-system with the unbelievable amount of packaging we deal with in everything we buy. It is unconscionable to continue using the amount and types of plastics that are our mainstay in todays retail environment. It is incumbent upon ALL of us to do something about this.
TWB56 2 years ago
There actually has been a break through in biodegradable plastic that is made from corn oils. The significance of this is that sugars in the oil are able to be eaten by bacteria making it last only about 1/4 as long as traditional plastic packaging and far less toxic too. Hopefully they start using it soon.

more biodegradable plastics? is that possible due to its complex structure?

laraemeadows 2 years ago
Bill you are completely wrong about that, Illegal dumping goes on all the time. But a large part of the floating plastic is from litter the way you said. If you go on NJDEP web site you will see all the citations issued in just the past year for every form of water pollution you can imagine. Many ships constantly dump all kinds of chemical, hydrocarbons, and solid wastes all over the Oceans. Had a friend who used to work at a factory ordered to dump industrial wastes at night into the river.

typical americans
MsWithnail 2 years ago
There is no better place for industry, corporations, governments and businesses to dump it,s free no one will catch you and profits will increase. Why pay dumping fee,s.
No amount of education will stop this it is all about profits. Recycling is something industry hates. The nice thing is someday we will be able to walk across the ocean on a plastic
matt. Some states require core exchange for glass and plastic bottles but most industry lobbies against this.
jobedied 2 years ago
Garbage is not being dumped in the ocean on purpose.
People either throw it on the ground or in a garbage container..
On the ground it gets picked up by the rain and ends up in the sewer.
Eventually this garbage ends up in a lake or river which leads to the ocean.
