i wander if they got the idea for mannequins coming to life for this video was from the Twilight Zone episode when the girl was turned into a mannequin?
This reminds me of a book I read recently, "Kongo Days" by Lord Rutherford-Banks (London, 1900) "I noticed one of the bearers chewing meditatively on an oddly coloured meat. I asked my guide Ouloo what he was eating.
"It is flesh of White man. Chango (the bearer) says the White was high in schooling and therefore his flesh is very high in antioxidants."
My wife pointed out to me it can also pay homage to Dr. Who, specifically the Nestenes who brought plastic to life and used mannequins. The episodes I'm thinking of are the first Jon Pertwee story "Spearhead from Space," "Terror of the Autons," which was also the first episode to feature The Master, and the first episode of the revived Dr. Who "Rose" which featured Christopher Eccleston as The Doctor.
lets not forgedt that back in 1984 the late, great Malcolm, The X Man, invented Hip hop in Youngstown, Ohio. It was at a nite spot called PRIME TIME and many famed singers appeared there like Elvis, Elton and Cher. I was there recently with my group Congo Conga for a tribute to these wonderful stars who b rought so much pleasing to all the music-loving people in Youngstown and cities al;l over the great state of
Truly a very underestimated band. Amonia Ave is my favorite APP album... Eric Woolfson will be missed by all the fans. What a haunting video,I LOVE IT!
@garebear1015 No, though I'm sure they were influenced by it. It's also a bit like the 1978 film "Tourist Trap", where a demented man turns living people into mannequins in a rather ghastly way...
@shmuli9 I remember that film too, but didn't relate it to this video. It reminds me of a cross between a Twilight Zone episode and an episode of Boris Karloff's Thriller. The Twilight Zone episode features a department store dummy that comes to life and lives in the real world for a month, then goes back to the store and another goes out for a month. The Thriller episode featured a woman who was married to an abusive tailor and had dressed up a dummy and named it Hans. Creepy.
@RedStickHam Yes... they did TWO episodes of the Mannequin in the department store thing. In the first one (1963), the mannequins were actually fairly nice; in the remake (in the mid-80s) they were kind of menacing...
@shmuli9 I've seen both versions of this episode, which was called "The After Hours." It also reminds me of the second story in the Peter Cushing film "Asylum", which deals with a tailor who makes a suit that can bring a dead man back to life, similar to the episode of "Thriller" I mentioned. Twilight Zone, Thriller, they don't make TV like that anymore, and they don't make music like this anymore either.
@RedStickHam I'll have to look up "the Asylum"... I used to LOVE Hammer films, as did my mother. (My dad andmy sister didn't particularly care for horror movies.)
APP is hands down one of the best bands ever in rock history! Kudos to the Woolfson & Parsons duo for giving us such great music that will always live on!
Btw, I don't mean to sound like an idiot, but could someone please explain the concept of the video to me? :D
I remember this on MTV!!..I really liked the video..didn't care much for the elevator music..I do like APP..he pretty much made the kind of music he felt like making at the time and this song must have been a boring time in his life..still great video
As a kid when I first popped Amonia Ave ony turntable, the subtle start of the songans then the layering of all the remaining sound that came in had me snared and I knew APP had me for life, but what kills me is those dark menacing pictures of Alan Parsons himself, kinda like Jesus with a chip on his shoulder! I like that!
@nic01944 eric woolfson was a wonderful lyricist writer though according to parsons he would agonize when it came to writing them well as people know writers are perfectionists i understand your comment it has happened before where people are moved the late princess diana a prime example understand me i'm not belittling an event that obviously struck a strong emotinal chord but maybe thats the point the loss of people not because of what was achieved but what was left not done.
Certainly a good reason of getting a bit older, is that we can turn back on some great songs that really have placed a mark in our head. With almost everything that APP has produced I can recall a thing in my life when just buying the albums. That means APP was a super band!! And timeless to me! Thx for sharing!
Very rare that a song hits on so many truths about this world as a whole, and our lives. Alan Parsons song's are extremely underrated, and speak so much truth. My guess is that people don't like it, because they can't handle it. I can attribute this songs, and these lyrics to MANY situations in my life.
@22RZE maybe thats the point the honesty in erics lyrics to prime time was to hard for people to hear.frank honesty even partially hidden can scare people and people do irrational things when confronted with truth.
It's amazing that you can still love a song like this after so many years. I bought the LP in 1984 and I still think its a great album. Trouble is, not many of my friends have heard of any or the APP tracks so they dismiss the music straight away. Fortunately my wife likes the APP music. Particularly Limelight, there is another classic. RIP Eric
First heard this tune on a magical train journey through the southern deserts in Arizona. Was in a dreamy 1940s restored train car with only two or three other folks. This nice guy in the car loaned me his head set which was this recording and others by APP. The stars were bright out in the sky as this classic train chugged along and I went into an alternate reality as I listened. Magic!
Never seen this before. thank you. I thought Ammonia Avenue was a one of their best, though my favourite is Vulture Culture. I do think that this is a little fast though compared to the original
One of my Favorite songs by the project. This video is so true! We ALL need our PRIME TIME in life just once. Great song, Great video, Great Song, GREAT BAND! Juniquejulie
I don't remember this song, but I remember the video.I had forgotten about it, but it reminds me of an episode of the old black & white Twilight Zone. Not a specific episode, I just mean it's as if it were an unfinished script that was made into a video instead.
Every time I listen to this song I am reminded of my childhood - it takes me back and I am able to relax. It's too bad Eric Woolfson passed away , he will be missed.
@mountaindewfanHD I don't know what has offended you my friend because I don't consider I made any remarks that could have offended anyone. Always reminds me of "The After Hours" episode of The Twilight Zone series... surely an inspriation for the video? Love this video!! (And the TZ episode)
los vi en Tenerife 2 veces..nunca pense que veria a uno de mis idolos en directo ..y menos que le fuera a estrechar la mano... son un icono de la musica y a la vez son muy humildes...algunos deberian de aprender
There's something about shop window dummies, isn't there. An episode of Doctor Who in1970 (an another in 2005) used them as killing machines, prompting a spate of complaints from the public. I love the laughing one in this video - perfect nightmare material.
I really do not think the video/song resembles the Twilight Zone. The one you're thinking of, "The After Hours."
The plot consists of a mannequin named, "Marsha White"...
taking an Express elevator to the ninth floor of a department store--an elevator carrying Miss Marsha White on a most prosaic, ordinary, run-of-the-mill errand. She's looking for a gold thimble...in the Twilight Zone. :-) I love that episode tremendously! You must see the end! It's can't miss! :D
I think this is the last lp that has the original APP sound, the songs I have heard from Vulture Culture sound too synthesized which came out after Amonnia Avenue ,by that time in 85 music had a overdone electronic sound ,and some artist were thinking that the guitar had seen its better days ,yea great thinking
I notice the chorus has the same chords as the Transformers theme. Considering their relative release dates, I think Prime Time influenced the Transformers theme - also 'Prime Time' is too good a TF joke to pass up.
considering Alan did some engineering work on 2 PInk Floyd albums (Atom Heart Mother and Dark Side Of The Moon), then this would be Alan's tip of the hat to them.
@kronik191 Eric sounds a little like Rick and Dave singing. He definately sing better than Roger.I used to think Eric sang the part on the song Time that Rick sang.Because Alan engineered DSOTM
Played this song in my ensamble group in school, was awesome.

Isn't the video based on an old Twilight Zone episode?

I really do not think the video/song resembles the Twilight Zone. The one you're thinking of, "The After Hours."
The plot consists of a mannequin named, "Marsha White"...
taking an Express elevator to the ninth floor of a department store--an elevator carrying Miss Marsha White on a most prosaic, ordinary, run-of-the-mill errand. She's looking for a gold thimble...in the Twilight Zone. :-) I love that episode tremendously! You must see the end! It's can't miss! :D

Thanks for posting this song. I searched for three days through all the Alan Parsons material for this one.
Great to hear it again after twenty five years.

The repeated "Maybe the stars were right" line makes me think of the Call of Cthulhu.

I'm not sure where the chords match up but if they do that would seem rather ironic.

considering Alan did some engineering work on 2 PInk Floyd albums (Atom Heart Mother and Dark Side Of The Moon), then this would be Alan's tip of the hat to them.

@kronik191 Eric sounds a little like Rick and Dave singing. He definately sing better than Roger.I used to think Eric sang the part on the song Time that Rick sang.Because Alan engineered DSOTM
