@AvalonMorley No. He is now the artistic director of the Berlin Ballet. I saw him Aug 11 teaching a master class at the Long Beach Ballet Academy. He was very humble, humorous, and personable. What an inspiration!
@MissMillyDee Thanks for replying. I figured that must be so, but wasn't sure. Glad he's directing, and gave you a good impression; he's always seemed like a sweet guy.
@AvalonMorley He is still a principal with the Staatsballett Berlin but also the artistic director...he seems to dance less of the big roles...but was the lead in "Peer Gynt" last season...!!!
I saw Pestov Gala in Moscow with Krysanova, Filin, S. Zakharova, Evan McKie, Vassiliev, Osadcenko, Kochetkova, Genia Obratzova, Merkuriev, Yuan Yuan Tan, Ashley Bouder and Vladimir Malakhov !!!
@samthedancingman he is a marvelous dancer and is the only important thingh on a dance forum .his private should be never touched ,but on this channel often happen this kind of umpolite behaviour.saw him very young ,at his debut in italy, was great
His control in those cabrioles is almost unreal. The inner thigh strength and control it takes to do them that slowly and deliberately is just incredible.
Also I love that he does not leave his back leg behind when he's doing his jetes. So many male dancers with a high front leg and their back leg lagging at 45 degrees. His form is perfection.
Malakov has one of the best bodies for male dancers... just look at his pictures when he was young....he was flexible almost like girls....and he's a great artist.....and yes it pisses me off too because here on youtube people think that they know everything and they can say everything.......this is stupid! people show some respect!!!....I'm a ballet dancer and I know how hard this man has to work to became what he is now....so please people stop with stupid coments and enjoy in his art!!!
Guys, if you don't like this guy so much, what POSSESSED you to look him up on YouTube and watch him? Ballet is a VERY difficult artistic endeavor and one must live and breathe it in order to come across looking anywhere close to even just "good." This artist has worked very hard -please don't bash him, he is a great dancer and if he isn't perfect or doesn't have to technique that you find correct, that's you own personal opinion and you may have it but let's not forget, this guy lives for art!
hahahaha wow this cracks me up. i think it is HILARIOUS when people (who have probably never taken a ballet class) criticize one of the leading men of AMERICAN BALLET THEATER. seriously, if you want to criticize him you better be rudolph nuryev ofrmargot fonteyn or kevin mckenzie or someone we have heard of
@TheNat93 ppl only like him because he is "malakhov".... and that's why they use him, because the audience wants to see the celebrity... he looks very insecure on his tours and very weak through the whole thing.... he looks like a student, not a principal
@TheNat93 oh please, he is so stiff in this video... his expression, his legs, everything...... when he was about 20 he was totally amazing with a high jump and such a nice body.... then i guess he got lazy and never took class anymore, since he can hardly do a double tour as we see him here....
Furtehrmore, just watching Malakhov, you can see the great qualiy of his russian training. Even today ( the post-golden era of Russian ballet, the Russians still produce some of the best dancers in THE WORLD!!

i actually really like ethan stiefel,i dont find him effeminate at all, even if the choreography is a bit airy fairy,he still looks like a male dancer.he is not overtly masculine, like acosta perhaps, but he gives male dancers a good rep.with malakov is looks like giselle and giselle on stage sometimes.i used to be a professional dancer both classical and contemporary

urranuss: You judging these dancers' sexuality and their "masculinity" tells me you have issues re/ your own sexuality, or maybe... a closet gay boy?? As for your claim that you "were" a professional dancer is a bunch of shit. Professonal dancers have respect for others in the business, not like assholes like you who judge a dancer by making assenine comments! You are mockling Malakov?? who the fuck are you to mock him? He is a world class dancer in demand, .. and you.. where are you??
I absoloutly agree with you, im 16 years old and am aplying for ballet school next year. IT really really pisses me off when people critisise male dancers for there sexuality, male ballet dansuers are some of the fittist, strongist and most respected people on the planet! And you are absoloutly right bodypoetry when saying that anyone in the ballet world is highly respected as to become a ballet dancer you need indcreadable skill and strength.
urranuss.. your name says it all, "your anus" , is where all your idiotic comments belong. What the fuck is it to you whether malakov is gay or not, I dont give a fuck about his sexuality other than the fact that he has more talent than you will ever hope to have. As for you dancing these parts, you wish!! true artists NEVER citicize or belittle other dancers- only dickheads like you w/ inferiority complex do !
To be fair his technique is not average it is outstanding, Carlos is definately virtuostic and has an incredible jump but hasn't got the cleanest of techniques, but then again you can not compare just any two ballet dancers and commit to such a bold statement as one is crap and the other amazing.
I would like to point out aswell that this is a classical variation and is no all about the height of his double tours, merely the musicality and projection of his character throughout. Also appreciate that this is at the end of a three act ballet, people who go to prix do nowhere near as much before doing a solo like this.
@willsimmons12 you see technically better 15 year olds at the prix de lausanne
carlos has one of the cleanest techniques out there,he may be past his prime but when he was in his prime,no one could match his placing, classical line, control, artistry, port de bras, stage presence.i have seen A LOT of dancers in my life,he is the most rounded male dancer i have seen, kinda like the roger federer of ballet.malakhov is very very over rated,i think roberto bolle is a far superior and beautiful dancer
@willsimmons12 i have seen him live..i think he was a better dancer when he danced for the vienna state opera.this solo is pretty poor, especially considering that it isnt that difficult in comparison to corsaire, don q or acteon
you dont know anything, you cant say cabriole, his toujetes were awesome and malakhov is awesome. when you can dance better than that thats when you can talk
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
very bad capriolle... barely a single... and his tour jete were not good either.. he was aiming to much up (look at his arm) and no finish at end just girly step....
BUT, that doesn't mean the total opposite dancer doesn't learn how to do them.......Different dancers have different strengths and with Malakhov being as long as he is, he plays on his beautiful technique and extension. He uses his body more, in a way a female ballet dancer would..but..when it comes down to it, he's built almost the same way..so, why compare him to Misha of all people?
Different training, different bodies produce different results.
because he was so amazing and he pushed the standards up for the male dancer, but not every male dancer is built like Misha and more than half of the shit he used to do "trick wise" is hard as FUCK.
I think that people are forgetting that ballet is still DANCE and that simplicity is best. Being clean, being percise. Misha was a blessing and a curse to AMERICAN BALLET,
OMG, the guy is all legs. How does he control those things! Seriously though, people get too much into comparing dancers. Every dancer is as different as a fingerprint. Misha's body makes him what he is as much as his technique. You cannot compare, you just appreciate each one as he or she is... that being said, Misha's better. haha.
Malakhov and Misha are two totally different dancers. Malakhov is more lyrical Misha is just a virtuoso powerhouse and had such a Masculine presence. In my opinion, Malakhov should have been a girl. He dances way too pretty at times. This is in no way a put down its just he moves way different than Misha...
I like him, he is flexible and has great techinique. i don't know how anyone can say that he is better than either Rudolf or Mikhail though. ALthough he does have a very nobly and royal way about him, I also thought he looked rather effeminatem in particular his hand movements. He is just not a virtuoso. HIs tour en lair were not very clear either.
The technique is teached has been improved and now best dancers have more a concience of monk, more complete, but the mental and phisic level of self-control teached in the vaganova school in times of nureyev was anyways monstrous. there malakhov seems to me a little scared and undecided, he was young, also a little imbalance after a tour en l´air and he dont join legs in first jumps. In adittion too Nureyev had a better feeling.
He is extremely good, his lines and style, but i must agree that he lacks of a lot of testosterone, i'd likehim even better if he was stronger and powerful, i diagree about Corella his a lousy dancer. But you have to watch, simkin, Carlos Acosta, and of course the best... Rudolf, never seen a better Desiree
How long ago did you see Rudolf dance Prince Desiré? I have recently bought a DVD of his Sleeping Beauty and it was a great surprise! Compared to him, not only Malakhov but almost ANY professional male dancer today dances better than Rudolf. He was the very best in his time, then he became a myth. Under today's parameters his technique is poor. He deserves our respect and admiration for his life-time work, but ballet has improved immensely since Rudolf's time. Let's admit it!

i've seen many videos of him. I know his technic has been surpassed by many or most dancers. But the elevation of his cabrioles, the doble assemble just before the series of double tours, then the menage of cassioles and the speed i havent yet see anyone match him in the important and scenic aspects of it. Not even legris whom perform the same variation and was trained directly by him, all new ones have a lot of destacable quality aspects, but i still like rudik better, unless in sleeping
i wasn't comparing malakhov to soloviev i was comparing nureyev to soloviev. i realize that malakhov and soloviev are far too different to ever be compared.
his dancing is always a bit fussy, as if he doesn't want to sweat or something....it's just not particularly masculine....and is probably a bit the opposite...if you know what i mean....
Malakhov doesn't dance always the same way. He plays a role even when the dance is simply a variation. Remember this is a royal wedding. How does a member of the royal family, a prince behave in such a ceremony? Is he supposed to jump happily or run towards his guests? No, class and nobility means here walk and move at a slow pace, showing elegance, conviction, a certain arrogance. That's exactly the way he dances this variation. He is a mature artist!
I like seeing some control and precision. Some authority. yes there were some minuses of the pyrotechnics but his feet positions coming out of the tours en l'air were amazing,
and it's nice to see the control so at the bginning of the tourn you don;t ahve the :wonder woman" tourn presentation attitude in the arms that can sem excessive in simkin, etc.
malakhov is a very very rare bread...his body is very mobile a he can still execute everything just aswell and elagant then any other dancer out there jumping just as high and turning also with the correct technique, guess what? his career is still booming at age 40, guys like corella and jose manuel wont last, they are finshed now,and at what? age 30? lol, plz
Zelensky rocked byadere. It looks like he floats in the air with those poofy pants. Great extension. Anyways i still think power is the most important part of ballet. Even for girls, u need a lot of power to perform all those steps. Yeah, you still need a amazing pointe, extension, turn out, etc., but you still need power to pull off all of your solos. It's what seperates the principals from the rest. Malakhov is still amazing dancer, I'm just saying he's not the best in the world.
And nobody can say who the best dancer in the world is. I mean, there are so many styles. So, don't be babbling on who the best person in the world is. You can se one of the best in the world(dandielion), but dont say best ever. Anyway, check out the newest star in the world of ballet. Daniil Simkin. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xqTrWHs6iY&search=simkin
You know, do we all have to be directors to critizise a movie? Do we have to be actors to critizise them? Do we have to be dancers to critisize one? I am sorry, but this argument is nonsense. We are the public and the public has the right to critizise...
cloud is right. where is the power in his movement. He needs so much more energy. His technique is amazing, I think he's great. But I just dont enjoy watching someone that doesnt give more to it. He looks like he could have put so much more emotion and energy into that preformance
malakhov is flexible and all, but he lacks power. Ballet is all about power. Maybe he's just old now, but still...even though he does less pirouettes, they're not even that nice. Watch jose manuel carreno do his pirouettes. !!! Even Malakhov says "He has the best pirouette in the world!"
I don't think, "ballet is all about power." Ballet is neither sport nor acrobatics. I could enjoy a good pirouette or high jump, and they are important part of ballet, but if you see only them, you would eventually get bored. Ballet is more than that kind of technique. It is basically about beauty and expressive power based on solid technique and a beautiful body. In terms of that, Malakhov is definitely one of the best dancers in the world.
I think you are all funny. This arguement is amuzing. I don't really agree with any of you. I think Vladamir Malakhov is amazing. He is definetely worthy of the acclaim he has gotten. But I don't think hes the best. My Favorite at this moment is Ivan Putrov, Principal, Royal Ballet. You should all find the 2000 recording of the Royal Ballets Nutcracker. He dances the Nutcracker and is flipping amazing. And he wasn't even a principle then. Well thats all from me. TTYL.
I have seen them all, my dear. All male dancers with a name, at least. I travel a lot and have been everywhere: Bolshoi, Mariinski, ABT, New York City Ballet, Japan, POB and others. And no! Never seen any male dancer better than Malakhov. He is definitely the best.
So the Mariinsky and the Bolshoi don't understand anything about ballet. He danced at the 1st and 2nd Mariinsky festival, was scheduled for the 3rd and is a Mariinsky guest dancer. This Sleeping Beauty was a glorious evening at the Bolshoi, like they hadn't seen again since the times of Vladimir Vasiliev. They regret having lost him for the west! Nope! They don't know nothing. Perhaps they should hire two top rated experienced world famous ballet masters: griffindance and eelskinwallet. LOL
Nuh, Malakhov the lazy ponce!! If he was wearing point shoes you couldn't tell the difference between him and the girls! No double cabrioles, not even CLEAN tour en l'air, nothing interesting to seperate this 'performance' from a mark through in the studio. Find a better danseur noble to fawn over PLEASE.
Malakhov is a lyrical danseur, as well as an exquisite partner. Not all of male dancing is about power - it's just what the ballet world presents as the norm. He's got a solid technique, beautiful line, very smooth, I like him a great deal.
Not interesting dancing ….boring.

Not a fan, watch his wrists, he always moves like a ballerina, a bit too feminine for my taste.

Phyre702 4 years ago 5
because he was so amazing and he pushed the standards up for the male dancer, but not every male dancer is built like Misha and more than half of the shit he used to do "trick wise" is hard as FUCK.
Phyre702 4 years ago
Not every dancer is FLASHY!!!!!
I think that people are forgetting that ballet is still DANCE and that simplicity is best. Being clean, being percise. Misha was a blessing and a curse to AMERICAN BALLET,
Phyre702 4 years ago
Malakov a good dancer but not more
jenknermario 4 years ago
OMG, the guy is all legs. How does he control those things! Seriously though, people get too much into comparing dancers. Every dancer is as different as a fingerprint. Misha's body makes him what he is as much as his technique. You cannot compare, you just appreciate each one as he or she is... that being said, Misha's better. haha.
UnklRudi 4 years ago
Malakhov and Misha are two totally different dancers. Malakhov is more lyrical Misha is just a virtuoso powerhouse and had such a Masculine presence. In my opinion, Malakhov should have been a girl. He dances way too pretty at times. This is in no way a put down its just he moves way different than Misha...

I agree, there's something phony about him. He is in love with himself, not ballet.

Technique is good, but he is SO phony!
bobibo2007 4 years ago
I like him, he is flexible and has great techinique. i don't know how anyone can say that he is better than either Rudolf or Mikhail though. ALthough he does have a very nobly and royal way about him, I also thought he looked rather effeminatem in particular his hand movements. He is just not a virtuoso. HIs tour en lair were not very clear either.
Vaninwe 4 years ago
The technique is teached has been improved and now best dancers have more a concience of monk, more complete, but the mental and phisic level of self-control teached in the vaganova school in times of nureyev was anyways monstrous. there malakhov seems to me a little scared and undecided, he was young, also a little imbalance after a tour en l´air and he dont join legs in first jumps. In adittion too Nureyev had a better feeling.
moussedechocolatus 4 years ago
He is extremely good, his lines and style, but i must agree that he lacks of a lot of testosterone, i'd likehim even better if he was stronger and powerful, i diagree about Corella his a lousy dancer. But you have to watch, simkin, Carlos Acosta, and of course the best... Rudolf, never seen a better Desiree
raulishnikov 5 years ago

Not even legris whom perform the same variation and was trained directly by him, all new ones have a lot of destacable quality aspects, but i still like rudik better, unless in sleeping
raulishnikov 5 years ago
watch soloviev. he graduated the same year as rudi and he owns his ass!
konktothextreme 3 years ago
Rudik himself always admired Soloviev..
raulishnikov 3 years ago
thats because he's far superior to nureyev. and he knew it.
konktothextreme 3 years ago
Malakhov is an elegant dancer, but it's not fair to compare him to the supernatural Soloviev, who was in a class by himself.
jkircher314 3 years ago
i wasn't comparing malakhov to soloviev i was comparing nureyev to soloviev. i realize that malakhov and soloviev are far too different to ever be compared.

his dancing is always a bit fussy, as if he doesn't want to sweat or something....it's just not particularly masculine....and is probably a bit the opposite...if you know what i mean....
tcarboneau 5 years ago
Malakhov doesn't dance always the same way. He plays a role even when the dance is simply a variation. Remember this is a royal wedding. How does a member of the royal family, a prince behave in such a ceremony? Is he supposed to jump happily or run towards his guests? No, class and nobility means here walk and move at a slow pace, showing elegance, conviction, a certain arrogance. That's exactly the way he dances this variation. He is a mature artist!
tatiana10 5 years ago 3
I like seeing some control and precision. Some authority. yes there were some minuses of the pyrotechnics but his feet positions coming out of the tours en l'air were amazing,
and it's nice to see the control so at the bginning of the tourn you don;t ahve the :wonder woman" tourn presentation attitude in the arms that can sem excessive in simkin, etc.
Amarventris 5 years ago
malakhov is a very very rare bread...his body is very mobile a he can still execute everything just aswell and elagant then any other dancer out there jumping just as high and turning also with the correct technique, guess what? his career is still booming at age 40, guys like corella and jose manuel wont last, they are finshed now,and at what? age 30?

Cloud74 5 years ago
And nobody can say who the best dancer in the world is. I mean, there are so many styles. So, don't be babbling on who the best person in the world is. You can se one of the best in the world(dandielion), but dont say best ever. Anyway, check out the newest star in the world of ballet. Daniil Simkin. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xqTrWHs6iY&search=simkin

As for me, i love Igor Zelensky and Farukh Ruzimatov more than other dancers.

You know, do we all have to be directors to critizise a movie? Do we have to be actors to critizise them? Do we have to be dancers to critisize one? I am sorry, but this argument is nonsense. We are the public and the public has the right to critizise...
gondoliere 5 years ago
well please only critisize something when you know what u are talking about!

cloud is right. where is the power in his movement. He needs so much more energy. His technique is amazing, I think he's great. But I just dont enjoy watching someone that doesnt give more to it. He looks like he could have put so much more emotion and energy into that preformance
LAWESTBY 5 years ago
malakhov is flexible and all, but he lacks power. Ballet is all about power. Maybe he's just old now, but still...even though he does less pirouettes, they're not even that nice. Watch jose manuel carreno do his pirouettes. !!! Even Malakhov says "He has the best pirouette in the world!"
Cloud74 5 years ago
I don't think, "ballet is all about power." Ballet is neither sport nor acrobatics. I could enjoy a good pirouette or high jump, and they are important part of ballet, but if you see only them, you would eventually get bored. Ballet is more than that kind of technique. It is basically about beauty and expressive power based on solid technique and a beautiful body. In terms of that, Malakhov is definitely one of the best dancers in the world.

I like Malakhov, but for me, no one is better than Angel Corella :P

I think you are all funny. This arguement is amuzing. I don't really agree with any of you. I think Vladamir Malakhov is amazing. He is definetely worthy of the acclaim he has gotten. But I don't think hes the best. My Favorite at this moment is Ivan Putrov, Principal, Royal Ballet. You should all find the 2000 recording of the Royal Ballets Nutcracker. He dances the Nutcracker and is flipping amazing. And he wasn't even a principle then. Well thats all from me. TTYL.
KYleBallerino 6 years ago
yes. you, tatiana10, should see way more other dancers to claim that a dancer like malakhov to be "the greatest of male dancers," phhht.
eelskinwallet 6 years ago
I have seen them all, my dear. All male dancers with a name, at least. I travel a lot and have been everywhere: Bolshoi, Mariinski, ABT, New York City Ballet, Japan, POB and others. And no! Never seen any male dancer better than Malakhov. He is definitely the best.
tatiana10 6 years ago
hahaha. finally someone (griffindance) knows what they're talking about!
eelskinwallet 6 years ago
So the Mariinsky and the Bolshoi don't understand anything about ballet. He danced at the 1st and 2nd Mariinsky festival, was scheduled for the 3rd and is a Mariinsky guest dancer. This Sleeping Beauty was a glorious evening at the Bolshoi, like they hadn't seen again since the times of Vladimir Vasiliev. They regret having lost him for the west! Nope! They don't know nothing. Perhaps they should hire two top rated experienced world famous ballet masters: griffindance and eelskinwallet. LOL
tatiana10 6 years ago
Nuh, Malakhov the lazy ponce!! If he was wearing point shoes you couldn't tell the difference between him and the girls! No double cabrioles, not even CLEAN tour en l'air, nothing interesting to seperate this 'performance' from a mark through in the studio. Find a better danseur noble to fawn over PLEASE.
griffindance 6 years ago
Malakhov is a lyrical danseur, as well as an exquisite partner. Not all of male dancing is about power - it's just what the ballet world presents as the norm. He's got a solid technique, beautiful line, very smooth, I like him a great deal.
Sempion 5 years ago 2
This video is awesome! Vladimir Malakhov is the greatest of all male dancers!
