@J4YM5 Yes. Yes they are for real. They were, in fact, the first subjects of a multi-billion dollar experiment in time travel that catapulted two Roman-era Britons into the 20th century. It took years to teach them modern English and convince them that the demons living in the video cameras would not steal their souls during their brief moment in the televisual spotlight. On a more somber note, they committed suicide shortly afterward, owing to irreconcilable culture shock. Glad you asked.
'Can't quite decide whether he's a yuppie-type American or he's a Briton' is a good description.
Grossman illustrates the pitfall of trying to fake an accent simply based on listening to it. After 30 years in England he still sounds like some silly tourist off the plane from Boston doing a bad imitation of Prince Charles.
If you move somewhere after you hit puberty your accent essentially stays the same with very few exceptions. He's not one of them.
Stephen Fry doesn't say Fulham. He says fullomy...which means very deep, slow and sort-of lapsidaisical - very much an attribute of countryside accents. Think of a farmer from Somerset or Dorset. If you are interested, Loyd Grossman spent most of his childhood years in the North-West of England, so I believe. Has anyone checked out his new show yet? Step Up To The Plate with Anton Du Beke. LEGEND is our Loyd!
don't think it's fullomy, partly cos i'm not sure that's actually a word. what fry says is most likely fulham-y (ie a place like fulham, where they all sound like giant toffs). fry does a little speech sample to illustrate, and it definitely sounds like something you'd hear out of fulham. somerset accents sound waaaaaaay different.
Yes, it is quite weird. It sounds like he's got a Kennedy caught inside his throat, and can't quite decide whether he's a yuppie-type American or he's a Briton.
Who is here from QI?

There is no such word as fullomy. It is definitely Fulhamy, in other words, its a mixture of east coast american and 1970s Fulham.
