  • I spent weeks getting flashbacks of some cartoon that I remember watching over and over as a kid but it wasn't until 5 minutes ago that the title came to me.

I've just watched it again and I have to say I am not dissapointed, suprisingly it lived up to my childhood memories. Props to the makers, I still love this even after 20 years.

  • i saw this film when i was 3. 15 years later it has stuck in my heart. now i have found it again

  • boycott CGI !!!!!!

  • you can see a huge similarity between this an An American Tail, and not just because theyre mice...

  • oh yea i know another one. over the hedge. its about betrayal. the serious "are you really going to sacrifice others for your own pathetic and selfish purposes?" kind of betrayal.

  • agrees with nemmyladyzombie. this is a fantasy involving animals with their own voice. movies with anthros these days are usually some sort of joke that parallels the mundane parts of life and makes it all cutesy and fun. with nothing truely serious happening. that is not reality. movies should be like nimh and up and (i know one) finding nemo. they've forgotten why we like movies. btw where' pt 2.

  • the book was better :S

  • Holy crap, I can't remember how many times I watched this on VHS when I was little.

  • Today kids movies are all happy and non-threatening at all. Theya re what this generation has midguidedly stereotyped what being a kid is like. Its wrong. Kids are subject to the worst horrors they'll ever had to face their whole lives; the fact that life isn't all candy and ice cream like they heard told in those bullshit bedtime stories. They have to face loss, fear, uncertainty, animocity and betrayal. Things that shape you as a person.

Today;s movies reinforce the lie. Its wrong.

  • @NemmyLadyZombie You sir/m'am deserve a cookie. I whole heartedly agree with you there. I really despise most of the cartoons/movies these days they try to pass off as kids movies. The movies of the 90's, those were the classics, and im glad I grew up in such

  • @Mike190 Watership Down, The Rescuers, Secret of Nimh, those are violent and scary as fuck. But the scary parts only reinforce the good parts later on. Its called inflicting emotions in people. Its a good thing!

  • i used to watch this like everyday as a young kid and i finally saved up 99 cents in pennies and nickles to buy a mouse from the pet store :)

  • This was ny favorite animated movie growing up.

  • Allright, can u tell me which Disney or Pixar or Dreamworks animated film tells about sickness, death and dead husbands? If there is one, plz tell me.

Because comparing with those other movies, like Disney characters, sometimes have voices more humourus and juvenile. From the beginning of this film, the voices are more serious and authentic.

Now I must see the rest of the film.

  • @movienaut

UP and How to train your dragon says says near they end how they killed thousands of dragons

  • @movienaut There is one Pixar which deals which deals with death : Up. The first minutes are quite heartbreaking,

Don Bluth's masterpieces desserved better success nonetheless, Secret of NIMH in particular.

  • If anyone wants to watch this in full, Hulu has it with interspersed commercial breaks. Also, Nimhster has AIDS.

  • nice!

  • Ahhh, my favorite child hood movie :)

  • read the book but iv nvr seemed to get around to movie...

  • Movies like this are for everyone, not just kids. It takes a real master like Don Bluth to make a film like this. One of may favorite childhood films and still one of my all time favorites.

  • This movie terrified me and my brother for YEARS

  • aww fucking Nostalgia Critic brings this movie up and I recall how much I loved it as a kid, still an amazing film, its even better now that I fully understand whats going on rofl - kids today have shit movies imo. This plus Iron Giant were epic animated films that I love.

  • @Khorne676 I agree, we managed to get the age where movie and shows were on top. Now there are moving and shows scraping the bottom being called "hurrhurr amazeng durp"

  • Anybody want to read memorable stories, just respond to me if you have any questions. I'm good at writing historical fiction outlines, but I don't have time to actually write them because of college and homework.

  • love it one of my favorite's, thank so much for sharing it.

  • It has been sooooooo long since I've seen this movie! Thanks for posting it!

  • Oh I remember when I saw this while I visited a friend a LOOONG time ago, but I never understaood anything of what was happening x) But now I can see it again and understand and all xD Thanks so much for uploading =D

  • how can anyone "dislike" this movie?

  • @joshmeister4449 NO idea....

  • BLUTH FREAKING RULES. This and ADGTH are, in my opinion, his strongest works.

  • when i was little i think i saw the sequel and got so scared i couldn't finish it. i was kinda pathetic back then.

  • @pleeppleep Don't ever see the sequel again. I'll bet it scared you because of how HORRIBLE that movie is.

  • @pleeppleep you weren't pathetic, it scared me too :)

  • Simply a CLASSIC, thank-you for posting this RARE gem : )

  • Thank you for posting!!!

  • Hm, I've never seen this movie before, but the beginning already seems promising!

  • I was told to watch this; there's a website in the works called "The Secret of NIMH Source," and I wanted to know what the movie was about.

I have a vague impression of having seen it when I was a kid; I distinctly remember Mrs Brisby, if not by name. Since it's a Don Bluth movie, it's a wonder I don;t remember more. I grew up on his works.

  • Wow, I haven't watched this movie for over 15 years and just seeing that opening scene, watching those gnarled hands conjure that magical blinding ink, listening to that ancient, somehow terrifying, somehow fatherly voice....I could almost feel the wonder I had as a child. Thank you for uploading. That was a beautiful moment.

  • Where is the second part?

  • i love the book

  • These types of movies are what I'm going to show my kids when I have them and none of the stuff that is shown today that people try to pass off as animated classics.

Films that make you laugh, cry, fill you with fear at certain parts, and then giving you those heart - filled moments.

That's what you call a real animated movie.

  • serious goose bumps. I love the way it is drawn. especially the beginning.. and the low quality blurs it a little which I like... I remember seeing this partly as a kid... sooooo looking forward to it!

  • Does anyone notice the writing on the left side of Nicodemus's book? It starts out by saying Jenner has become cold hearted and then I can't read the rest because his hand is in the way.

  • The voice at the beginning kinda reminds me of the Jigsaw Killer, and that's just really weird. (And yes, I know the puppet's name is Billy.)

  • do you have the dvd ?

  • @metalman109

    I do!

  • I loved this movie, but after awhile I couldnt find it in our movie store :(

  • i wish they still made darkish childrens movies like this

  • @73Sk3tCh37 Yeah like this, Watership Down and is it Black dogs I think it is but anyway yeah. I'm glad I was born when I was I just about fucking scraped the bottom of the barrel of good music films and animation. Know i can tell what is good and not

  • @RedZHunter You mean Plague Dogs? That's good, but SO sad!

  • @SpyroLUVA Yeah that's it. The scene where the dog jumps up on the man and accidently puts it's foot down on the trigger of the mans gun shooting him in the face. Imagine that on tv now

  • @RedZHunter No one would allow it.

  • @73Sk3tCh37 This... And maybe that Black Cauldron movie are probably the darkest....? And you could just tell that during that Golden Age of Disney and such that movies like this were made for the kids AND the parents! LOVE!

  • @smartndumb101 tSoN 's 'not disney. but you're right. the black cauldron is awesome!

I don't know if it's that the ones today don't have nostalgia value or what, but they just don't have the right feel. then again, I only saw the black cauldron for the first time about a year ago, and I liked it.

  • @73Sk3tCh37 agreed.

  • I've never seen this before, so I hope I like this!

  • Like this movie. THought of a broadway version in my head

  • don bluth rocks! i have dragons lair

  • I was lucky enough to work at Don Bluth and painted on this awesome movie, my sister, mom and some close friends are all in the credits...zerography, cel painters,

we got to go to like the premiere showing....it was all very exciting and I can claim the string scene, it kept flipping so gave it to me so all the colors flowed...anyway, I feel HIGHLY BLESSED TO HAVE BEEN A PART OF IT and others the studio did.

  • i have the LP soundtrack to this movie. its really hard to find though... lol i even found a mistake on one of the track where it sounds like some one walked in wile there where performing.

  • this will stay forever nobody can delete

  • this will say forever nobody could get rid of it

  • this will keep on forever and nobody will delete it

  • i love this movie along with the page master and rock a doodle best movies ever!!!

  • i swear this is the first movie i'm gonna show my kids

  • I'm an adult who still loves this movie

  • This was a very enchanted cartoon when I was young and still today. You probably can find this movie on dvd in a Walmart great movie for the next generation!

  • It's my childhood all over again~

  • @ZomBethable So True a childhood classic!

  • Thanks for uploading this, I might make use this as material for a Mr Plinkett size review of the crappy sequel

  • Superb animation, dark atmosphere, and beautiful music... It's foolish of Rotten Tomatoes not to add NIMH to their list of best animated films.

  • The first movie I ever saw. I loved it.

  • my fav movie when i was a child :X i still love it

  • I lol-ed so hard when she she said God bless you he said God bless your self!! In the book (Mrs. Frisby an the rays of NIMH) he way nicer

  • one of my all time favorite films, thanks so much for uploading!

  • Nicodemus is like a super-old, rodent version of Dumbledore or Gandalf. I LOVE this movie!

  • I used to see this movie as a kid! The music and the visuals were SO COOL! This is still a treat to look at even today!

  • growing up this was my favorite movie oh how i missed it, i love this so much! THANK YOU

  • My brother and I found a rat skeleton in our backyard once.

  • are u and ur bro ok and by ok i meen not on drugz?

  • @Treemeadow good job

  • @Treemeadow O.o wtf?

  • @yiotos

eh, you know how kids are.

  • This movie is going to be shown on Cartoon Network.

  • lol i read this book call The Secret of NIMH and on 6th chapter i was like omg i wana see the movie

  • i remember when i was in school in english we read the book of this movie

  • meh to its was called "Mrs.Frisby and the Rats of NIMH"

  • It's such a darn shame Don Bluth went out of business. They were way ahead in terms of quality. The movement and the backgrounds are gorgeous. They didn't cut corners.

  • Technically, Bluth had to reuse a lot of his animation in his films, so that could count as a strike right there.

  • Not really. Most animation studios reuse frames and animations. 3D studios often reuse squeletons. If the result is polished and elegant, it's not a discredit.

  • Dear god! I remember absolutely NOTHING about this movie except for the fact I was in love with it as a kid. *glee* Thanks for posting!

  • Omg I love this movie so much! i havn't seen it since I was like 5!

  • my teacher not ot see it until were done with the book i dont really care.

    lol

  • I simply love the animation of this, the movement and anatomy of how the main protagonist moves. Just like my recent beloved film Ratatouille, I adore how they keep that cartoon face of mouses and rats with the eyes higher to the the forehead as well with focusing on their walking habits. Excellent film!

  • i heard this was don bluths best movie, you guys don't really care i just wanted a to express my appreciation for the post.

  • Yes, like everyone else I have heard about the remake.

  • man the 1980's were good years for these kinds of movies

  • O.o did they ever remake this movie on dvd. cuz i still have the VHS version but it dont look brand new.

  • Good book and movie.

  • I love this movie. I was kinda scared of it as a child but it holds a lot of memories for me. Thanks for posting!

  • Thanks so much for sharing this, it's a trip down memory lane for me 'cus back then I was working with Animation and I recall we got a visit from Don Bluth himself ;)

  • i absolutely adored the story and the movie.. I can't speak for anyone else.. But i wore the vhs out ... very dark but with alot of heart ..

  • I read the book long before I saw the movie and I didn't like it. Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIHM was so much better than this thing you call: "The Secret of NIHM." Nothing like the book, too weird.

  • MY favite part of these kind of animation that most of to day is lacking is the motion and body lengage. I mean when the talk they dont stand still or move just a bit of the head or arm. The whole bloody body move to express the mood. Watch with out sound and you can still get how they feel and practicle leep read.

  • hi.........pls upload if you can find and the greek version..........that movie is the best of all..//the music is the best o the best,...of cource jerry goldsmith is composed it!!!

  • I loved the movies that were made by these group of animators. Its so fluid and nice to watch. All dogs go to heaven is one of my favorites and it's dark like most of these. Back when it was ok to mention God and common phrases such as "bless you" Even Pegans use that. I hate how they've changed everything to please everyone. Cartoons are lacking so much these days. No passion anymore. Just dumb, obvious typical stories.

  • @ShadowVeranda *Pagans. And yes, I agree with your statement. Now people get offended if we say Merry Christmas, and some get upset if we say Happy Holidays. Why can't people just be tolerant!

  • @ShadowVeranda i totally agree, also, cartoons back then really had some nuance that made you feel the water as a character like a little mouse was trying to hide for the storm, and the tastes and feelings of objects were depicted so greatly. Yeah sure HD or 3-D movies to experience the movies, but those cartoons are my number one

  • @ShadowVeranda Amen. Everything these days is CGI and comedies. They're all comedies!!! Pisses me off! At some point in history, people have decided that the only emotion kids should experience is laughter. No more good stories, dark stories, memorable stories. Nope, just Steve Carrell, Chris Rock and Hannah Montana voiceover bullshit and zero story and sexual induendos purposely made to go over the kids' heads and hit the adults. Shameless. Fuck Shrek.

  • @SandBarAndYou Well seeing as you said CGI I don't know if you will agree with me or not but Pixar steal makes emotional and dark movies that have meaningful theme to them with a great story Its seem to bo the only animation company that cares about other things then just comedy but your opinion may vary.Other then Pixar I aggre that everything eles is stupid these day.

  • @ShadowVeranda yer right! m=cartoons arn't the same as they used to be

  • @ShadowVeranda That was well said bro. It seems as if everything that was made back in the old days is just better. Especially with the religion part. I personally think it is a disgrace to our Founding Fathers that we are not a religious people anymore. And we can all see the consequences. A bunch of lazy, inconsiderate, unpassionate bunch of people. In Hollyood at least

  • @JacksMagicBean *ahem* The founding fathers never based America on christianity. From what I've heard, most of them weren't even christian. They were Deists.

  • @BecauseICan34 well said

  • @BecauseICan34 I never said our founding fathers based this country on christianity. They based it off of religion period. IDC if you're a Muslim, or a Buddhist, or a Jew if we all have a religion and are all a religious people with moral values then we will overall be better/good people.

They all believed in God yes. Whether they were all christian I don't know but they did believe in religion and religious principles

  • @JacksMagicBean our country WAS founded on christianity. plain and simple. all of our laws are from the moral precepts of christianity and the 10 commandements. the others need to do some research anjd quit watching mtv and playing video games

  • @ShadowVeranda i agree. this was my favorite movie when i was like five. it still is :D

  • @ShadowVeranda of course why don't we add the racism that they used as well, because we clearly don't evolve in animation.

  • @dgat213 Can't take the sweet with the sour?

  • @benjidrake it's racism we're talking about. So no.

  • @dgat213 Oh give me a fucking break. No one is trying to make this a race thing and that never even crossed my mind. I personally don't remember ANYTHING racist in any of the movies I mentioned in my post. Get the over it. No one was even talking about it.

  • @ShadowVeranda Eat a dick sir.

  • @dgat213 When are you available? ;)

  • @ShadowVeranda whenever you are, babe.

  • @dgat213 Last night was wonderful. Sorry for laughing when you pulled your pants down. Did you get the money I left for you? I hope a full $20 works. I couldn't make change for $15 so maybe the extra $5 can buy you some creme for that rash on your balls. Call me!

  • @ShadowVeranda

It's not a rash, it's herpes, and you just caught that shit, bitch.

  • @dgat213 Oh Snap! O_o lol

  • @ShadowVeranda i know right! it really sucks.

  • @ShadowVeranda With the exception of Pixar, I completely agree with you. I remember when animation was both an adult's and child's medium for entertainment...now it's been repressed so much because of parents and the like that it's so childish, I've lost my interest...not to mention that I'm TIRED of deformed looking 3D animation...I missed the old fun 2D.

  • I just read the book now im going to watch the movie

  • What I love about films like this one is they're not afraid to be dark and scary at times. Kids love to be scared! this was one of my favourite childhood films even though it gave me nightmares for days!

  • i watched this movie when i was a kid and i didnt understand anything i am so happy that i can watch it now and understand thx for the upload :D

  • This movies always stuck with me, but that's because it was confusing.

  • I love this movie.

It's so sad, but I still adore it.

  • This music is composed by Jerry Goldsmith. I've heard some other works of his and some of this is pretty bright for him.

  • One of Goldsmith's best scores.

  • im reading this in school and we r on chapter 26

  • Then let me tell you something about the book and the movie: The story's been changed for the film version, science being replaced by freakin' magic! :(

  • omg i have the book

  • thanks for putting this up :) im not sure how long it can stay here on youtube but im glad to be able to show friends how great this movie is ^_^

  • Shh... Don't jinx it.

  • opps...sorry :( though in my past experience ive learned that praising somethihgs staying power will jinx it but being pesamistic about it wont.

  • omg.... this movie freaked me out when I was little! I had nightmares for a month! I still love this animation.

  • SQUEAL! omg i loved this movie SOSO much when i was a little fella.

  • i remeber watching this movie when i was a kid....and i couldnt understand half of wtf was going on XD *now i dont remember anything about it....so im geting 'refreshed' in it*

  • NIMH?????????/

  • National Institute of Mental Health

  • U mean this cartoon is about the mice of NIMH ?

WOW, this sounds really interesting, but also very easy to fuck up with unnecessary special effects

  • Actually, it was the story that got screwed up here. Don't get me wrong, this movie's got first-class animation and good acting, but I just resent that they replaced all the science with frickin' magic!

  • You are my hero lol

  • To be honest, I've never really been a fan of Don Bluth's movies, except for this movie and An American Tail. I respect him as an animator, but most of the stories of his works never really grabbed me.

This has to be my favorite of his, mostly because it isn't your typical, cutesy cartoon. And, I really liked Bluth's animation when he was still working for Disney.

  • His stories really grabbed my attention when I was a child, why? Because they were fun XD

But I can see your point, his first films as a director were so fantastic and wonderful with gorgeous animation, but then years go by and he falls for the cutesy things.

I hope he does a comeback but with excellent story telling, no cutesy things, well, not too cutesy to make one sick.

  • Yeah, Bluth pretty much blew it in the 90's. Though I remember kinda liking Rock-A-Doodle as a kid. His other movies were just awful compared to what he did in the 80's.

I recently saw the short he worked on in the 70's: Banjo the Woodpile Cat. It was one of the most cute and charming things he's ever done. It felt like a throwback to classic cartoons, but in Bluth's own way.

  • This is my childhood favorite thnx 4 bringning it back :)

  • I just tried to watch watership down, also by don bluth, And...call me a wimp, but I couldn't Finish it. I mean....Goddamn.

  • watership down had nothing to do with don bluth although i can see how you would think that.

    WATERSHIP DOWN RULES!!!!

  • Watership down was made by Nepenthe films. They also adapted another book of a similar tone, called the Plague Hounds.

  • Guess I was wrong then about Brutus...its been awhile since I had to read it....it's pretty sweet knowing they still have it on the read list for English classes though. I better read it again eh? Still...Brutus is my fav.

  • i just finished reading the book and its nothing really like this:(

  • OMG i love this movie. it's one of my childhood favorites^^

    i always loved Jeremy.

  • i remember watching this when i was ltitle, but i dont remember the end

  • I was always scared of Brutus the Guard Rat

  • really? i always thought he was cute when i was little.

  • In the book Brutus never spoke but was known to be one of the more dependable rats. He's there in the end...Justin throws a rope to him as he stands up on the swinging cider block. He was no coward and was all buisness. :)

  • Brutus did speak in the book. we had to read it for english.

  • i know he speaks in the book

  • God, I remember watching this when i was younger, it scared me, haha, especially the hands un the beginning, but, now, rewatching it, I am adoring the animation on Necudemus's hands, thos were beautifally animated, god, *sends chills down my spine*

Don Bluth films were amazing, I wish they were still around...

  • me too
