This reminds me so much of The Hunger Games. The way Sectors are divided like Districts, the way Shinra rules over everything like the Capitol. Toss in The Quillian Games and there's the book right there.
I always saw Midgar as more like Oceania from 1984. On the bottom under the plate you have the proles, then the Outer Party/Shinra drones on top of the plate, then the Inner Party/Shinra executives up in the ivory tower. Add in the telescreens, black market and cult of personality for Shinra/Rufus, and there you have it.
Except that in the real world there isn't any hard evidence that Bush is really any of those things. Of course in FF7, the gamer is told point blank that Pres. Shinra is.
Specifically, the song that's playing as President Shinra watches is an excerpt from Haydn's The Creation, Part III: 30. Von deiner Güt, o Herr und Gott (By thy goodness, O bounteous Lord). I've seen it called By Thee with Bliss, too.
It's just a small segment toward the final fourth of the song, though. :)
for the people who are interested in what president shinra is listening to while he doing this ruthless mass murder, its joseph haydn with the creation
Very memorable scene. Much more tragic than the death of Aerith/Aeris. You can only imagine what this game will be like if it were re-made on Consoles/PC with the latest graphics engines.
because Shinra Inc. was a ruthless World Government that set AVALANCHE up for the Sector 7 Collapse to accelerate public support and trust for shinra Inc.'s war on anti-shinra terrorism.
One of the scenes that have a lot of dramatic potential - if it was remaked with current technology, I'd recommend displaying the reactions of various citizens in slow-motion with a more dramatic, sad rendition of the FF7-Theme, similar to "On that day, 5 years ago" - especialy Wedge, Biggs and Jesse should be seen in their last moments.
