I am pretty sure it will never be possible to get "rid" of religion.  It is hardwired in all of us. If you don't worship some deity then you will worship money, sex, nature, your favorite politician, actors, musicians... there are just so many possibilities. Ultimately religion defines us -- even if you think you don't have any. Even the suppression of emotion, ala Star Trek's Vulcans or the movie Equilibrium, would never work because for some killing would just be a logical decision.
