Obviously Arvan doesn't match Paul, but to say it sounds bad is just ignorant. These days, thousands of amateurs can blast through Scarified with ease. Back then, to play this well was a mean feat, so give Chris Arvan some credit.
Almost correct! That is a Kahler 2300 flatmount. The (newer) 7300 flatmounts can be locked into a fixed bridge. Both still available....awesome bridges.
@Phrygian12 Because you get a different sound from where you pick and what you have the pickup selecter set to. So he should be in the bridge pickup right now, therefore picking in between both pickups for a best sound.. Not over the neck practically..
some of players like the warm sound you get when playing near the neck others like that bright sound near the bridge every ones different just because he isn't playing like Paul Gilbert doesn't mean hes wrong or bad try telling Marty Friedman that.
@wingeddemon5807 .... Everyone develops twists to their picking style. I think no matter what some of these guys (Malmsteen, Gilbert, Vai, Impelletieri, Friedman, etc.) do, it will sound incredible. And I remember when I was taking lessons my teacher tried to get me to change how I pick (coming down on the strings at an angle instead of straight), but sometimes I like the harmonic sound you get by picking that way. It all works. =) (Does Les Claypool play bass in an orthodox way?)
@wingeddemon5807 .... It depends on the style you like. I know a lot of guitar players who prefer blues (I am talking old school like Robert Johnson) or folk guitar to blaring electrics, but then again some folks try to appreciate everything. That is tough. I used to dislike Clapton because of all the hoopla around him (while SRV got no respect, seemingly). In retrospect, I should not have even thought that way because admittedly Clapton is great.
well this Chris Arvan actually can't be compared with Paul...and besides Chris is not "shredding" anymore...in the 90s he met Nirvana and throw all his talent away for making another kind of music.
The editors sucked at putting this video together. They should have shown the appropriate people when they were playing the most impressive parts. Like at 0:55 when they show the drummer. Yeah, he's tossing his sticks, but the bass and guitars are doing this awesome tapping. -Or, at 2:09 when they show the guitarist doing nothing when it should be the other guitarist who's playing.
Scott is an awesome drummer. The Human Metronome was what we called him. Lives in VB and a great guy.. really solid and down to earth. Always love seeing him.. sometime playing with a "small" local band just keeping his chops up.
geez Paul Gilbert is a beast to have composed such a song O_o. It gives the drummer, bassist, 2nd guitarist a not so easy time too. These guys are beast too :D
Yo estube en una audición de Racer-x como baterista. Cojieon a Scott porque él es colega. Por cierto, paul dile a Palop que el sábado tengo que acompañar a mi abuela al podólogo y llegaré tarde al local.
Paul Gilbert is not in this video. The blond guy with the yellow Ibanez is Chris Arvan who was supposed to take his place when he left to do Mr.Big. He only did very fews show with them, one of which was also Paul's farewell show at the CC. But then Racer X decided to go forth as a 4-piece with Jamie Brown on vocals. Jeff Martin formed a new Racer X-type band called Bad Dog with Russ Parrish (pre-Fight) on guitar and Todd DeVito on drums. Todd had played in Black Sheep with Paul Gilbert earlier.
Todd was the drummer for Racer X for a VERY Short time, after Harry left to go back to Austria. He goes by Vito DeVito, if you can believe that...and his dad owns a drum hardware company.
I know, I've seen Vito at NAMM at the Dunmar booth. I think he was also teching for Vinny Appice at one time - maybe he still is. Do you have any Bad Dog live videos? I know they played a few shows around Hollywood, incl. the at Roxy.
yeah i believe this is when paul left racer x to form mr big, scott travis took his spot while chris arvan also joined racer x when declining a record deal.
since then, mr big has come and gone, and now racer x is back together again. although each member of racer x is out doing their own thing. IE paul's get out of my yard solo debute' =]
Also from John Alderete's instructional tape. I think the footage is a little different. Alderete's video obviously shows a little more of the bass playing. Everyone in this band rocks, though.
theese guys have great rythem...also the bassist is just fucking amazing. the guitarist is good but i would not call him virtuosa, but still fucking amazing man. but there rythem...shit! its just too damn good
Paul Gilbert isn't playing in this video. This video is from the Racer X website, and it is Bruce's instructional video. The other guitarist is Chris Arvan.

Very tinny, and very bassy. Like nails on a fingerboard.
Nowadays when Racer X play, Paul uses much better quality gear.
