  • AA is the only place in the world where you can walk in and tell strangers the most fucked up shit you've done and they don't judge you....they give you their phone numbers... :) strange world we live in.

  • I must say from my recent experiacnes with all of this Alcholism that everyone has a view point and a perspective on it. I am not saying anyones wrong, but thats my opinion and im staying with it, reguardless.

  • Alcoholism IS a disease.

It is chronic, progressive and can kill you if not controlled.

    There is no cure.

However, realizing you have this progressive disease and not taking steps to control it is a copout.

    I am an alcoholic.

I am fighting the addiction because the disease will kill me if it isn't controlled.

  • most definitely NOT A DISEASE.

  • BAHAHHAHA!!!! you said it girl!!! people hate when you tell them its not a disease because you are LITERALLY telling them... "HEY... ITS YOUR CHOICE... AND... YOUR FAULT!!!" Its not like theres some virus inside him that FORCES him to walk to the fucking store and buy alcohol ROFL!!!!

  • You're an idiot...Try knowing something on the topic before discussing it..

  • Overall the whole thing sux ass, I have an alcoholic dad who doesn't really wanna drink but at the same time HAVE 2 do it. I'm not suffering from the same problems so I can't really say anything about the subject at hand other than that it's not in the genes (not in my case anyway)

  • Sweetie, you just don't know what you are talking about.... do you think that people want to be an alcoholic?? Everyone loses everything!!!! Once you are addicted..... you are addicited.

  • I don´t mind people saying that alcoholism is not a disease. Not at all!

WHO has defined alcoholism as a disease ladies and gentlemen..... Who are you to tell otherwise?

As one told me once at a AA meeting: Alcoholism is the only disease that tells you that you are not ill :D

I am an alcoholic and has been sober more than 6 years now, and belive me when i say that alcohol is only a symptom of the disease...

  • Smart girl! Do bankrobbers or padoefiles have a disease? No, they are fucked and need to get a life not a higher power. If recovery is a series of good choices wouldn't it be fair to say addiction is a series of bad choices? *Disease' is a cop out!

  • Alcoholism is not a disease in anyway.

The disease concept has never been proven. Proponents of the disease concept have failed to meet the burden of proof for their claim of a disease.

When called on it they will splinter and add a hyphen making it "Dis-Ease". Just a slippery way of keeping the disease ideals.

By calling it a disease they get to duck responsibility for it.

Think of it in habitual j-walking terms and it makes more sense.

  • A disease is something that comes from with IN the body. the whole MYTH of disease is a relatively new one, proplegated, as usual by the christian church that needs everyone to trade their drug addiction for Jesus. Alchoholim is what assholes who have no impulse control and are very immature become. Don't let people tell you you are wrong. Is IS THEIR responsibliity but crybaby drunk assholes need to play VICTIM. You are the victim by being in their presence. YOU GO GIRL

  • alcholism is definately a mental disease. its an addiction and an addiction is a mental disease. its very very very hard to overcome alcholism by yourself. you need serious help to overcome it. anything that corrupts the mind is autimatically a disease.

  • indoctorated 12 step zombie lol. you lot bore me... leave me alone

  • "Lot?" Wow. Theres a real "Mature" thing to say huh? If something was to bore you, why start it up in the first place? You should really think your comments over before you post them.

  • I dont have to enlighten people on Alcoholism. There are plenty of dr's that can explain the full impact of the consequences of Alcohol. I have attended over 1000 AA meetings.

You know nothing about Alcoholism except what you have seen. Im sorry for you that your being forced to experiance it. but your not the only one. grow up. research, learn and understand. last year in the UK there was a 50% increase in liver disease in under 20 year old men.this is Alcholism

  • You think you know everything about alcoholism because youve been to 1000 AA meeting? Talk about me needing to grow up? Yeah, ok.

  • look i understand your hatred of alcohol. Why dont you spend some time learning about Alcoholism? you have the internet. please try to understand and learn about what is happening to people all over the world. its crazy. look up alcoholism on youtube

  • By the way, I do have a understandign of alcoholism because ive done a little research but not a whole lot. Some people are more strong on opinons then others.

If you have done everything you said youve done, then you would know there are two sides of the story. There are doctors who believe it is not a disease and others who do.

oh and by the way, the whole immature thing. Move on from it. Its making you seem the one immature.

    Dereneylolz:

    When statuseight says to you:

"your too young.. too immature and unwise to the problem of Alcoholism. you know nothing about it so dont open your mouth until you understande the full impact of the disease."

...take it as a compliment. Read between the lines. Anyone that describes alcoholism as "a very real disease" and cites their attendance at "1000 AA meetings" as their "expertise", is an indoctrinated 12 step zombie.

  • [2]

You on the other hand are questioning the dominant paradigm.

You do not accept the "taken for granted" as a given.

For example, your assertion that the disease model of alcoholism is a transparent means by which the alcoholic is excused for their morally inept behaviour is right on the money girl!

Keep thinking - and especially keep thinking outside the box.

We NEED more young people like you...

    :-)

  • my mum died 1 month ago 2 hours after an al-anon meeting. your too young.. too immature and unwise to the problem of Alcoholism. you know nothing about it so dont open your mouth until you understande the full impact of the disease.

  • why dont you spend $6 dollas on abig big book.? take some time to learn about alcoholism without being so nieve?

  • Yeah and why dont you have your mom dying a hospital from it and be a 16 yr old girl?

    Hmm?

Then go read your $6 BIG BIG book. I dont think you can read well with a wall of tears.

  • ffs Alcoholism is a very real disease. its a medicaly recognised disease. its not a lack of self will or weakness. its a progressive fatal illnes and its killing millions. Wake up!

  • And I suppose you know everything else too?

Why dont you enlighten everyone on how you know this so well?

Dont tell somebody to wake up because quite frankly, everyone is different.

You have no idea how my interpitation of it is, other then this video. Everyone is entitled to their opinon and if you dont want a rude remark like this, then learn how to express it nicely.

Or dont express it at all.

  • I am sorry you have been hurt by s person who is obsessed with alcohol, AA can work if the person is willing. God gave us brains, but we do not always know how to cope with life. Alcohol can seem easier than God.

  • i agree alcoholism is NOT disease that is just a excuse they use my dads a alcoholic and everytime he whines about it being a disease or a illness witch just pisses me off but i think it shouldent be classed as a disease its just a pathetic addiction no more noless

just coz it kills dose NOT make it a disease

its nothing like Cancer or AIDS them you cannot help getting but u can help alcoholism

if u got the willpower u can be rid of it by (helping ur self) u cannot to that with REAL diseases

  • "i think it shouldent be classed as a disease"

If you don't think that it's a disease then perhaps you shouldn't keep referring to "alcoholism" as an "ism" - which suggests disease. That is, your vocabulary only serves to support the notion that "alcoholism" is a disease. A better term would be "heavy drinking".

In other words, if "alcoholism" is not a disease, then the PATHOLOGICAL CONDITION called "alcoholism" as a does not exist. However, the BEHAVIOUR called "heavy drinking" DOES exist.

  • Yes, your pretty right on that.

I dont think I went into as much research as I shouldve because i felt so strongly on it.

    Thanks for the tip though.

  • Go to ALA-TEEN.

Alcoholism is a very real disease, It kills millions worlwide, its up there with Cancer and AIDS, you dont understand it because (God willing) your not an Alcoholic. I feel sorry for you.

  • Sorry, but I dont need ALA-Teen, thanks but no thanks.

You do NOT have to be something in order to understand it. So I may not be a alchoholic but I have spent a LOT of time with it and I got my own understanding.

Hell Im young, someday maybe later on I could understand it better but right now I have a strong understanding of it and theres no way to me that that can be a disease. Sorry but not to me. I need some hard evidence of it and then I will believe it.

  • You have a strong understanding, but not the experiance of what it's like to be physicaly dependant on Alcohol. Your basing Alcoholism on a lack of self-control or self-will on our part. Alcoholics lose control of their drinking because its a progressive fatal disease. Once we drink we have a compulsion to drink more. it's a reaction we cant help. Thats why there is treatment and AA groups to help keep us sober. its a worlwide illness that is killing millions, the evidence is all around you.

  • Yeah because I have also known people who are able to control their drinking, while others cant. So what about them? Did they just not get the "Disease" or what?

As far as I know, there is no treatment but their probably is for far richer people then my mother. She has tried AA thousands of times and gotten nowhere. No offense. I mean I love her and all but its not worth it if nothing is going to come from it. I understand the compulsion and all that and thats why I can see where it could be.

  • Yes, I've experienced alcoholism in my family when I was younger. I hope your mom triumphs over her problem. You are such a wonderful girl for looking after her.

  • Thank you very much.

  • I agree, drinking alcohol is an addiction fueled by choice. In so many situations people want to avoid the truth which normally leads to more bad than good.
