Do you know if the sound problem was fixed in the Athearn G68620 version? I recently purchased a used SD70ACe UP#8334 unknown date of manufacture. I am trying to decide if it needs the speaker modifications or if it is the version that ATH has released after the issues were identified?
So far I have purchsed 2 faulty SD70 series loco's. The problem with both was bad trucks, they would not stay on the rails at all. I travel for a living and visit the hobby shops and they all report the same problem, will not stay on the tracks. Out of 3 purchased, only one was good so there's a big problem in China!
That's interesting. I will inform my Uncle of this since he also purchased the same model. The funny thing is when he purchased his he had the clerk test the model. The model malfunctioned and died unexpectedly. So the clerk found another Ace and that one worked fine. The only problem my Uncle had was that one of the front number boards fell off. I believe Athearn was not really ready to release the product, there an issue with quality.
I used a 1/4" x1" strip of thin sheet styrene and Aleene's Tacky glue to close the hole.
Aleene's was again used to seal the two halves of the speaker enclosure, and to make the speaker "gasket",
Athearn has announced that the next run production run will be fixed, and for those locos allready sold, they will be sending out free repair gasket kits, or you can send loco in for repairs.
Yes its too bad that these discrepancies were not found by Horizon Hobby's QA department, I also feel that Athearn didn't realize how much pressure they'd be in to release these models and maybe rushed the release?!?!
Anyway, as modelers - It was only a matter of time before we got in to these and started tweaking them and modifying them, agreed?
BTW, how did you seal the speaker housing, there is a big time difference in the sound once you did... Good job A+

this wouldn't be a problem if the stuff was made in the US. Horizon Hobby needs to step it up here, at least there is a fix to the probelm.

aeeeeee, that's a huge difference in sound. shame Athearn did not get it right. Glad you did it.

@flanker23 I believe Athearn described how to do what he did.
