Breathtaking. I don't think the embellishments are too much. This song has been done many times and I love how she's made it her own! Beautiful tone and amazing control. Inspirational.

This is my absolutely favourite version of this song. Every time i hear it again, i´m so touched - wonderful voice, great charisma, very individual interpretation.
Beautiful cover of this song. this is exactly the way i think it should be sang. Somebody said that you sounded too theatrical for this song which, since this song was written for a musical, lol I'd take as more of a unintentional compliment then anything else. Again, PERFECT cover of this song.
One of my favorite songs very well done. I really enjoyed it. Nice style on both voice and piano. Before I saw this Linda Rondstat's was my favorite version.
she has a very theatrical voice ('08 BFA Musical THEATRE duh :P), and it's a really good performance, but i've never liked the emphasized vibrato as much as a straight-forward pure and clear sound that lasts much longer than the vibrato itself heh
As a musical theatre director, allow me to make a few observations...your voice is lovely but don't "trick up" the song with verbal or vocal embellishments...internalize it and let Gershwin do his part...simply sing the song and it'll be great. I suggest listening to Jean Louisa Kelly's version from "Mr. Holland's Opus"...she underplays it but with laser-like focus...
Appreciate the advice. The "embellishments" heard are my emotions choking up my voice - so some may (and have) found that distracting...wish I could redo this now (2 years later). But part of me is also content w/ this rendition in the sense that it came spntaneously out of what I was feeling as not a "musical theatre" singer but just as a passionate, imperfect person. Some listeners don't agree with my unusual choices, but one thing I can promise you - it came from nothing but the heart...
@LiaMenks Oh gurl, please! The clarity in your voice surprised me. I like freaked when I heard your voice and had to lower my volume (good thing). You have a GORGEOUS voice; very expressive. I'm writing this comment while listening to it and I can hear the emotions AND see your facial expressions without watching the screen. You're incredible! :) Much luck in your career!
Clearly a hearfelt performance, making it one of the better renditions on YouTube.
Personally I like Jean Louisa Kelley's the most. But in my book your emotionally authentic performance beat out most others, including even a couple of really Big Name singers.
I remember reading about a famous painter who tried to touch up his painting, but the museum guard stopped him.
It's fine as is. If you want to give it another go, record it and post it alongside the old one.
Well done and somewhat unique. Stronger of character and heart and less delicate and wistful than one would expect given the lyrics but in it's own way ... true to the spirit of the song.
very good but just slightly too harsh with the pitch. be a bit more laid back girl. let the words slurr out rather then punch them out. good voice though. ty
I've loved this song for more than 50 years and I've heard more versions of it than I can ever hope to count, but this is one of the very best...this is what the song SHOULD sound like. I expect I'll be hearing the name Lia Menaker very often in the future.
THIS GIRL DID HER HOMEWORK! such beautiful emotion, such beautiful vibrato, such beautiful facial expressions exhibiting her connection with the lyrics. just plain gorgeous. if you close your eyes and still feel every sway in her voice that seems appropriate to the character she's protraying - SHES DOING SOMETHING RIGHT.
Why r u singing something you can't feel??? Really nice voice... but where are the feelings?!!??!

@LiaMenks I actually thought the embellishments were endearing. Reminded me of Jane Monheit. And I don't think she's too theatrical for this song.
