Anyone having anything to do with ANY of the VV8 models: stunnuts@aol is THE known authority on building, upgrading or repairing them. Search ebay or msg me.
These are hard to put together. They look simple, but they take a lot of time. It is for adult supervision as most kids will lose interest after a while. You have to follow the instructions and not take short cuts. Only the older models have the electric motor and the spark plugs. The new ones went cheap and have a hand crank. I still have two in the box from 1970. I am going to put them together, some day, The crank shaft pully will fall off and the cam shaft will skip a tooth now and then.
Thats almost exactly like the one I had with a crank on it, no electric motor or lights. Its been like 17 years since I got it. Can't ever remember what happened to it though.
Yeah, I had one just like this when I was a kid. I could never get the glue to dry fast enough, things just kept falling apart. It was an ugly, ugly mess. I'm glad to see someone got this to work!

Did you set up the electric drive and plugs
or is this an old kit? I bought one last month
with hand crank only.
