Are you stupid? You're taking away wood which should never happen, you're using a damn file, instead of a radius block, and you're not being careful at all
Amazing this video has gotten peoples panties in such a bunch. Obviously you don't want to do a final level, crown, & polish this way, but that's not what he's suggesting. This is for the first leveling after fret installation. That's why it's part of a sequence called "How to Replace Guitar Frets". I'm guessing most of the geniuses who are commenting have never used a tool in their lives.
the bit that really made me laugh was at the end, it looks like the board isnt even flat! unless that is his was of getting some drop off relief at the body? (or maybe not...)
The way this guy levels the frets is potetionaly dangerous to the guitar. I have built and repaired guitar for 15 years now and my first fret level job was probably better and more consistant than this. Sloppyness is all I see here. Do yourself a favour and look up some alternative videos before you do THIS to your guitar
What this guy in the video is doing is definitely correct. This is the most effective method to handle a worn out fret economically, although it can be risky. In other words, if you don't want to lose money. Of course you can also take it to a guitar repair shop, which will cost you.
Steel rules make perfect straight edges for many tasks. Id love to try out a guitar customized by this guy, see what it sounds like.............itd be scary
@lewabdn steel rules r not milled flat enough to evaluate fret flatness trust me .only purpose made straight edge rules r the correct tool ie stew mac stuff they need to be accurate to 0005 thousanths of an inch per foot...just try putting a cheap rule up against a piece of glass to see why or two rule together and look through into light there will be a gap...
Kind of strange that he says "across all of the frets" and then files only one end of the fingerboard before doing the whole board. I don't think that will produce leveled frets. ;)
holy crap. You could do a top carve with a cheese grater too, but it's not recommended.
How about using a length of aluminum angle with sticky 3M paper on it and level the frets under tension of the strings WHEN THE FRETBOARD IS ACTUALLY GLUED ONTO THE NECK. Just an idea.
actually, it IS possible to level frets with the strings still on, using an aluminium angle with an abrasive strip glued on, but it is far more preferable to do it USING A NECK JIG, with the strings removed.
I would never let this guy touch my guitar..this is embarrassing to watch.

Arent you supposed to mark the tops of the frets with a sharpy then using a flat file file ALL the frets at the same time.
This not correct & should not be taken seriously. That fb will not be very good when its finished.
Its actaully scary to watch.Listen to the file grinding. His filing the frets unevenly & doesnt seem to be very careful at all.

this actually can be done with a file, but its a technique of highly skilled luthier masters. check

On the next series we'll show you how to smooth out finish imperfections with an angle grinder, Next time on Expert village.

W O W .
It's perfectly fine if Expert Village wants to leave this video up.
. . . they'll just need to change the title to something along the lines of:
"HOW TO COMPLETELY FRACK UP YOUR GUITAR IN TWO MINUTES AND THIRTY SIX SECONDS."

DO NOT DO THIS! THIS WILL DESTROY YOUR GUITAR! This video MUST be removed.
