Namarkoon said not to lube the nipples because they become loose over time, so should i not lube them for my bmx bike since the wheel will be taking a lot of impact?
never thought about tightening until 3 threads are showing. im so stoked to build my BMX wheel when it comes in tomorrow. its the exact same procedure instead its not a fixed gear wheel (which I assume this is) thanks man, everyone elses tutorials was very confusing.
Nice safety glasses! I had a similar pair at General Electric in s 1984! unless I was drilling something I've never worn safety glasses working on a bike. Kudos to you Mr. Safety!
I've trued my own wheels and let me tell you, it's a pain in the ass. I use a spoke wrench and getting it perfectly straight is rather difficult. My rims are pretty stright but has a very slight wiggle. You can't really see it but, I know it's there.
@ArrowCarnage You can use two books and place them between the rim and look for where the abnormality is. Be creative, you are only on the lookout for where the rim shifts
what about the rear rim? im building one, are all 36 spokes in the rear the same? or is 18 on the driveline side smaller and the 18 on the other side a little larger? i brought my bike rim and hub to my local bike shop and they couldnt even order the right size spokes. The hub is a formula DC 22 hub 35 holes and 135 spacing, the rim is an atomlab pimplite 26 inch and im using their torque nipples. can you get back to me, thanks!
i always thought that the bikecenter point not beingaccurate had to do something with the center of the wheel. no i was totally wrong about that,, you helped alot
Dude, mine was perfect just from installing the spokes. What are the chances of that? NO wait I think that my brake rotor is not giving me a true measure on the wheel straightness. Great videos man. I used the other ones to build my 24" DH race wheel set. Thanks
umm... you didn't ever check whether the hub was in the centre of the wheel. Both concentrically and laterally. If you just assume this from equal tightnening you'll end up with an oscilation or a turn left/turn right response. I agree whole heartedly that you don't need a truing stand but you do need to check all 3 dimensions of trueness!!
at around the 1:00 mark, how did you miss the joke opportunity for the "wipe the lube off the rim" comment. I had to go back and watch as I thought maybe I missed the caption. Nice work guys....
ive tried this with a bmx whee(36) i follwed this video exactly and ive got a problem were ihave to spokes touching the inner rim then 2 spkes hover complely above the inner rim, does anyone no how to solve this?
wouldn't recommend doing that for DH bikes and touring bikes that are destined to carry heavy loads. Spokes keep coming loose constantly.
We built loads of wheels for London Ambulance fleet - they carry something like.. I dunno.. probably 30 or more kilos on their racks. Some colleague had lubed nipples on some wheels and, weeeelll, after first couple of weeks spokes on those wheels were totally, totally loose. Had to relace them anew.
We tensioned the spokes (2.0mm) up to about 120 kilograms (Park Tool TM-1 Deflection Reading 25; with some rims - 26 (137 kg)). And believe me - I've built much more than 30 wheels. When I reflect now on the subject I think the case is the weight of those bikes. With all due respect aldo, I don't think you are doing 70+ miles DAILY with the bike that weighs more than 130 pounds.
(someone from London Met Police once weighed fully loaded Ambulance bike - it was 59 kilograms = over 130 pounds). And London streets are horrible: bumps, potholes, cracks, patches etc.
Now that the spokes have sat themselves in place, we have less problems; but still the same issue with newly built fleet bikes.
Anyways - nice having such discussion; exchanging experiences. Take care!
hey i just got done lacing all the spokes went in fine but i have some spokes that are really loose and there at the end of the thread on the spoke please help i dont like going up and down when i ride my bike
Just your average run of the mill bike or chain lube, like tri flow, or white lightning, just something to keep the nipples from freezing up on the spokes and to make it a little easier to turn the nipples when initially truing.
so i got a odyssey v3 hub right, my rim was free from a friend it didnt come after a week so my friend laced my hub to a random rim laying around. i was sure my rim would be hear last friday, nope. but i had already delaced my wheel.
i need to ride to day, and i needed it laced..u saved the day. u made this rely easy
Awesome video and much appreciated. I'm going to start my first wheel set tonight. Any chance you guys are doing one for a rear wheel that will show how to properly dish the wheel?
Yeah the plan is to get a rear wheel build up at some point in the undetermined future. It may be a week or two though since both of us have pretty booked schedules the next couple of weeks. Thanks for watching and good luck with the wheel build!
We tried to make these videos for everyone. The idea is that even people without fancy (expensive) tools, i.e. tensometer, should be able to build wheels and work on their bikes effectively. Thanks for the comment.
They're nice to have, but hardly necessary. A tension meter is a great reference to use if you want an empirical comparison, but the muscles in your hands are pretty good relative gauges as well. YMMV of course.
is it much different if you do a 32 spoke wheel, or even 28 spoke?

If your trailing spokes are hovering after you gave the hub a twist it means your spokes are the wrong length (slightly)

thebiketube 3 years ago
After you finish the build give all the nipples a good spraying down with brake or carby clean to get rid of the oil... no more problem:)
Love the vids, great advice.
skippy1022 3 years ago
I'm wondering... what was the spoke tension in the wheels, when they were new?
I'we builded more than 30 pairs of wheels, with lubricated nipples (with grease) and no problms with them!
I've got road bikes, 2 touring bikes, a dirt jump monster (Solid fame, Marzocchi forks heavy like a stone..)no loose spokes during the past 4 years
But the most important: 2,5 years with a hybrid bike on the roads, as a bike messenger.
NO problem at all! Every day 70 miles+
