@landog14 Arthur Fiedler died on July 10, 1979. This was many years after that. Fiedler never retired. According to wikipedia, he suffered a heart seizure of some kind on May 5, 1979, and died 2 months later.

its the boston pops orch, so that would be arthur fielder conducting....the piano player cant remember his name, toured with the smothers brothers for many years...
@leemohn It's John Williams on the podium (this is from some time in the 80s--Fiedler had retired, I think). If I remember the spelling correctly, the pianist is Michael Preddy.
i cant beleive i finally found this clip. bless who posted it. i first saw this when i was a kid on PBS and it has stuck with me all these years. tommy pushing dick out of harms way for the insueing battle is priceless. these guys didnt have to go "over the top" or be vulgar to make you laugh. their suldity was their strength. long live the smother brothers.
Tom and Dick just retired from performing. I'm kicking myself for not making a better effort to see them. Their act is easily one of the best I've ever seen. I'm hoping that some day they will put together a final tour. Their last show was in Las Vegas. I don't understand why they couldn't perform there regularly and make it work. Apparentley, their age and the travel ended the touring. These guys stood up to the establishment (CBS and the US government) when it wasn't popular. They are icons!!!
Oh man, brilliant stuff and of course it doesn't hurt that Pirates is one of my all time favorite musicals. And is that John Williams conducting the orchestra? O.o so much brilliance in one room.
Pure comedic genius! .... and they're gentlemen too ... God I miss this kind of humour .....intelligent, warm, kind and loving. Thanks for the wonderful moments Smothers Brothers!
As a kid, I never remembered Dicks voice being so clear and beautiful. We mostly focused on the comedy. Now I can appreciate their voices and their comedy. I don't think there is anything like them on TV now. Everything is so "COOL" and if it's "UNCOOL" forget it. Well, I guess these two were cool for their time. But they had class, no "cool" has class now. Even the MUPPETS had class in those days. Good humor but educational. Nothing like it these days.
I definatly love the Smothers Brothers, and I agree there is nothing like it on TV now. But I would recommend checking out the HBO Series Tenacious D and also the HBO series The Flight of the Concords.
Tenacious D is definatly on the crude side but you have a comedy/guitar duo who play off each other pretty well and are very good musicians (well Kyle is and Jack is just average).
The Flight of the Concords is hip yet "family friendly", they keep it clean (which I like).
No, being 18 is great! (I'm 54. Just think of all the great stuff you'll be enjoying when I'm dead and gone.) But if you're sad about missing the SB Comedy Hour when it first aired in the 60s, now you can enjoy their shows on DVD, as they just released a DVD set of their 3rd season. (They're starting with Season 3 because it was the most controversial.) You can order a 5-disc version from the SB official website, or a 4-disc version from Amazon. I've already ordered my set. Can't wait to get it!
I watched them as a kid, but never appreciated them as I do now. I never realized how funny and what good musicians they are! Especially Dick! What a beautiful voice he had! How old are they now??
I just saw the Smothers Brothers in performance this past weekend and they are still just as funny and entertaining as they were when I was a kid in the 60's.
They really were talented musicians as well as comedians. I looked forward to their show more than any of the others at the time: Glen Campbell, Ed Sullivan, Andy Williams, etc. They had a unique combination of humor, music, comedy and political satire.
I had such a lousy day at work...came home and checked these guys out for the first time on You Tube...turned my whole hight around...I laughed my ass off...these guys bring back such wonderful memories and I think I laughed even harder now...thank you for a great post of pure, innocent humor and entertainment...God Bless!
What a blast from the past! Super blend of music and comedy. I have this on VHS and it never fails to make me feel good. They were so good on this show (see Quando Caliente El Sol and the Yo Yo Man excerpts too). Thanks!
this sends chills thru my body, i grew up watchig these guys and had a huge crush on tommy (and paul mccartney).. i see i haven't lost that crush! they were so talented.. thx so much.. adding this with others to my blog post.
HA! I had a crush on Dick (and John Lennon). Wonder what that says about us? Dick Smothers, and also Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul & Mary). There's something about that gentle folkie tenor vibrato thing that just makes me melt. Yes, The Smothers Brothers were (and still are) very talented musicians as well as wonderful comedians. It's so great to be able to watch their performances again on YouTube! Thanks for posting this!
Smothers Brothers= Class A comedians. A LOT better than the ones you see mostly. "Comedians" that go around and expect people to laugh by saying "So. I walkeda round a half hour. scratched my balls and napped". WHAT is so funny about that? Smothers Brothers get my vote as top comedians of the 20th century.
GILBERT...SULLIVAN...TOM...DICKY...MY WORLDS HAVE BECOME ONE!!!!!! BEST THING EVER!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm looking for a song by them where Tom thinks he is The Whistler, then the greenhornet, then Captain Marvel
Does anybody know what that's called?

Well, checking IMDb, Tommy is currently 71, and Dick will be 69 in Nov. ( Today is 9/22/08. )
