@highlytrainedmonkees : I have no explanation beyond what you just provided, also, the story doesn't provide or hint at the Piper bringing the rats into town. However, the story has many variants and it is possible, though unlikely, that he brought them in as the main reason to make money by driving them out. And at night, who would hear his pipe? It might be subtle...
I remember watching this as a kid in the 90s, cosgrove hall films were amazing, it's so sad they shut. Do you have the reluctant dragon by any chance? I can't find it anywhere!
does any1 in this whole world know where i can watch the pegasus episode or better yet own it? it was my fave! plz i need help...it would mean so much 2 me...
The von Spiegelberg brothers saw to the eradication of pagan dancing rites performed on the heights of the Oberberg (earlier the Coppan) in 1284. Calvary is also named as the destination of the children but to the medieval mind Calvary connoted a place of execution .. Browning obviously interpreted Calvary in a positive sense as the place of the Crucifixion, a point well understood by the producers of this video as a white cross appears where the children are led into the mountain.
Yes, RIP! I'm sad to report that Cosgrove Hall Films ceased operations for good on October of last year. ITV shut it down and the location where the studios once were was sold in 2009 to a housing development company in order to build retirement flats there(!). This is a most tragic end to an animation studio that was the biggest and most reputed in the UK during the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s! I will never forget shows like 'Count Duckula' and especially 'The Wind in the Willows.'
I remember this video. I was captured by its poetry, the artistry of the animation, its overall CREEPY charm, so much like that of "The Sandman", another animation that kept to the original Germanic story.
Thankyou for posting this Video @aaront596. I saw this before on TV. I miss this show so much. The other show I miss is a boy with his dragon. That the dragon fights with King George.
I've been looking for this for years... i used to watch this too, the vhs i had was accompanied by a Cinderella claymation of the same type. Now to go look for that! Thank you for putting this up!
Funny, I don't find this story creepy or scary at all... perhaps he's some sort of angel taking the children away from such horrible town infested with such vile creatures... and I don't mean the rats.
its not the last kid...if you're referring to the kid in the beginning. i think the beginning takes place in modern times and he's just telling the story
Oh, I've been trying to find this for probably 20 years. I could never find it again. I so enjoyed it when I was a kid. It was a wonderful story and the music so beautiful... I surely am grateful you put it here.
I remember seening a CBS Storybrake Virsion Of This story (oh btw i think Malcom Jamal Warner was the host at that time). So If Anyone has that clip, put it on here. or even remembers it too.
I have been looking for this video ever since the advent of the internet! I watched it on TV in the 80's and loved it then, but could never find it since. I was hoping if I waited long enough it would come out on youtube, so thank you for making that possible!
I have this new on dvd. I havent watched it yet but there was just one rare one on amazon I found and purchased it for £51.00. If anyone is interested in buying it? The is another short animated film on the same dvd called the reluctant dragon.
the rats are actually the jews that spread through out western europe, the pied piper was a visionary that could wipe their filth from the face of the earth.
i live at 608 gallowgate glasgow scotland,i drink in a bar just down the road called the "heilin jessie" come down and i will introduce you to the area where we will bury your battered dead body!xxxxxx
I had this on video as a kid (betamax lol) and it's weird watching it now cos I didn't realise at the time that he was bad...I always thought he was saving the kids for some reason and I felt sorry for the little boy that was left out :S Watching it now is frightening!
i've had this on tape since i was 4, i'm now 20. I was amazed last year to find out that this was narrated by Robert Hardy aka 'Cornelius Fudge' his voice sounds very different today
this film scared me horribly when i saw it as a child, i was afraid to go to sleep for years because i was convinced the pied piper lived in my bathroom
Remember it from my childhood. It was as great as it was terrifying. I was really scared of the Piped Piper but I loved the story (and this movie) nontheless. It should be released on dvd.
o my god memory rush of my childhood :)

Has it occurred to someone that it was the Piper who brought the rats into Hamelin in the first place?

Yus! I really agree about the opening! I likes it as I always go to Cathedral service in Ely and heard such a style of music and I sing the hymn!

Some time ago I saw a program on the Discovery
channel about myth's and legends and there is
quite a lot of historians who claim that this
story really did happen in Hamelin in real life,
only there the children was not taken into a mountain but was taken deep into the woods and
killed by the Piper and his followers.
