  • What is this movie about ?

  • 5 stars! An extraordinary and sensitive chronicle of one woman's long and fluid journey through religious faith. It doesn't take any position on the subject, and panders to no one. Beautifully crafted in every way, this is the best film of 2011 that most people won't see.

  • so do we and God get to see Vera's naked ass....again?

  • Religion is insanity. Period.

  • This movie was wonderfully truthful and certainly reveals how dangerous fanaticism can be.

This was an honest protrayal of modern christianity today.

Christians that merely say what they think is expected of them while closing their eyes to the realities of life.

Real christianity is so much more then spouting scripture left and right like a mindless parrot or a conjurer of spells while not understanding the significance of living it out daily.

Yt is full to overflowing with such parrots.

  • Another confused woman, that thinks she knows what she wants, who she is, and where she is going, only to find out she does not know what she wants. Majority of women are insane, from my experience. 

  • @dinoing07 I'm guessing you're a guy...so do YOU know what you want, who you are, what your purpose is? I do agree (even as a female) that (most) women are mysteries unto themselves; they tend to be defined by their relationships outside of which they appear blank, though exceptions do abound. Women are not insane; I feel they are perpetually distracted, attending to a zillion priorities at once, their energy is scattered, their minds often splintered...is that what strikes you as 'insane'?

  • Women have a halo of purity and virtue that contrast with the dirty and mundane, but there must be some point in corrupting beauty, for better or worse ...

  • Farmiga's work, from all indications, portrays a nuanced story of a compelling spiritual struggle of a single soul - a struggle that will surely make some hesitate to divide the world conveniently into saints and sinners. It's the story of faith found and lost and the scandal of life. It's a gentle reminder that life is too promiscuous, too messy to be captured by the Bible or any other single story or ideology - and that, perhaps, we don't actually 'choose' our beliefs, our beliefs choose us.

  • @KoruWorlds If our beliefs 'choose us", can it also be said that we (mere puppets?) have been hand-picked by our addictions, vices, habits (good/not), neuroses, customs, phobias, rituals, traditions, etc? What role, if any, does 'free will' play in the unfolding of our lives? I will contend that we are more so the products of our CHOICES rather than our environment/upbringing...though much depends on how conscious we are, how capable of independent thought....consider all the 'sheeple'.....

  • Taissa and Vera are SO similar <3

  • Had the impression that this movie was about a serious flood... disappointed.

  • I suspect this movie will only make sense to Americans...

    God bless them.

  • A very good film

  • Great Movie

    FileWarez . Net

  • There seems to be another point running through the film. That is, the patriarchal nature of most religions, Christianity being no exception, presents women who may be strongly influenced by the feminist movement, one more obstacle to attaining the level of faith that they desire. Again, it may stem from a rationalist model that questions the traditional roles of women and is the foundation of the feminist movement. Overall, an excellent film and have got to add, Vera Farmiga is gorgeous.

  • The lead character longs to have the depth and certainty of belief of those around her. But reading and hearing the words of God along with prayer do not have the desired effect. She wants to feel God, see God, hear God, speak the words of God through the speaking in tonguex and tries various untraditional techniques to do so. In the end, it appears that the point of the movie is that it is difficult to be satisfied with a faith based model of belief in a world that celebrates rationalism.

  • Taissa and her mom are so beautiful. i'm infatuated with her mom. what a timeless beauty.

  • @h2soccergod Vera FArmiga is Taissa's Sister XD

  • @h2soccergod LOL theyre sisters!!

  • Love Taissa. Can't seem to find this movie anywhere though.

  • yuck

  • Omg! It's Taissa Farmiga from American Horror Story!!!! -3 :)

  • name of the song played in this trailer?

  • @TheGalaxyStars "How Great Though Art". Even if you dont like country, Carrie Underwood fucking slays the song if your interested haha

  • soooo this is how everyone speaks...

  • If God is the God that he has stated, one of love and mercy and grace..the one who leaves the ninety-nine to go after the one, why are his believer's sitting in the church while his child walks out the door? Why are they more concerned with what she's wearing and saying in church than her struggles with belief? I can so relate to Carolyn Briggs story as it was my own.

  • @lilgrrlfilms mine too. 35 years before I woke up.

  • B-O-R-I-N-G

  • after hearing about this movie on NPR I really want to see this, it looks great.

  • Who cares if there's an agenda? It doesn't matter if you agree with it or not, once it provokes the sort of debate at the core of the movie. Religious sanctioned sexism; challenges of faith; the prejudices of belief.

  • let's watch it before we make assumptions aye?

  • Wow, a lot of people are already giving negative comments without seeing first the film. Amazing..better than thou people.. For me, i'm excited in seeing this film.

  • I can't wait to see this movie! It looks to be "one womans story/journey" that I wouldn't mind seeing. Questions and tests of faith always interest me and I want to see how it turns out for this woman, her family and her community. I'll hold off saying anything till I see...(very excited though looks like a beautiful thought provoking film) :0)

  • I kind of hate this trailer but I can't wait for this movie.

  • religion is retarded

  • Wow... what a gay movie.

  • This movie nicely portrays the faithless, anti-intellectual emotionalism that has pervaded American Christianity since the second great awakening. Even her comment on 01:43 about being unable to "feel" God shows that she is basing her entire salvation on mere feelings. "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?" (Jeremiah 17:9)

I'm certain this movie makes no agendas or anything. However, it only portrays carnal Christianity - not true Christianity.

  • @edwardinkling I couldn't have said it better. GBU

  • @edwardinkling True Christianity is convenient to invoke because it varies in definition depending on who you ask. In logical fact, there need be no intermediary between God and man, because "cursed is he who trusts in man". So the entire construct of religion is worse than useless, it's a hindrance to those who would take responsibility for themselves. Only you are responsible for you, and you are the only one you are responsible for.

  • @d3ejmz How right you are. True Christianity DOES vary in definition based on whom you ask. There is but one credible source on the matter, which is the Bible. The Bible defines true Christianity. Those who have there own definition aren't being very Christian.

I would gladly be responsible for only myself, but a fussy thing called "love" keeps getting in the way. Because of love, I live sacrificially - forsaking any responsibility for myself by taking responsibility for the good of others.

  • @edwardinkling Well spoken, but nonetheless, it is still mocking Christianity and breeds validity to discrimination and persecution against us which is common in society as it is. I feel this is only coal for the fire, those prey of ignorance and faithless.

  • @iamspid3rman I said "this movie makes no agendas." I was lying, sort of. Every story features a struggle of two things and the victory of one. Stories are inherently preachy. This movie has an agenda: perhaps unintentionally, but it still breeds dislike of the "loser" in the struggle.

And I'm fine with that! God and I despise this kind of Christianity. It needs to be exposed and abhorred. But I'd like them to show true Christianity as well, instead of saying "All Christianity is like this."

  • @edwardinkling Christianity needs the emotional appeal, because if people use their heads they'll realize how ridiculous the Christian conceptions of hell, damnation, the Devil and sin are.

  • @HyenaJourno I think you can do better than that. Give arguments, not statements. What fun!

  • @edwardinkling I saw this movie a few weeks back and it doesnt bash on Christianity in no way. Its simply a story about Vera Farmiga, who wants to feel the feeling of a believer and on how she felt like she was drowning with all these made up rules the the 1970's and 80's baptist church had.

  • @BirkishSpyCam Yes, I ought to see it too. I'm madly curious, especially now after your comment. And it's true that a Christian - a true believer - feels a certain way. They are promised joy, peace, and sorrow by the Spirit. However, one neither confirms nor finds Christ in only emotions. Christ finds you. And when He does, then certainly there is an emotional reaction. But regeneration strikes all plains of the being - intellectual, spiritual, even physical - it is not limited to the emotions.

  • @edwardinkling Amen!

  • @edwardinkling Typical reply from a cult member when someone criticizes Christianity: "That may be correct, but these are not TRUE Christians. All the others are in a counterfeit form of Christianity, except for us, the true believers." I know that thought pattern, because it used to be mine. Wake up, my friend. There is no "true Christianity". All organized religion is restrictive and stalls progress.

  • @edwardinkling "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?" (Jeremiah 17:9)

Why did god create the heart to be like that? What kind of sick god would do that?

btw you also base your belief on subconscious feelings, you can wrap up your ideas in intellectual nonsense but... for you it feels good to have a big fella in the sky looking out for you and promising you to live forever... i bet thats a good feeling if your can believe in fairtales.

  • @babyturtlefilms

because god wants us to choose not force us

  • @faisalmemanghomo "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?" (Jeremiah 17:9)

So god made our hearts deceitful and wicked so we can choose him... you make god sound like a high school girl chasing the bad boy.

    Weird god you guys have.

  • @babyturtlefilms

you seem to know all about the verse and chapter in the bible,:))

makes us wonder why,yet even god through jeremiah said those things, he still want us to decide what were gonna do in our lives not forcing or make us submit

  • @faisalmemanghomo typical unrelated response... what does god creating us with dark wicked evil hearts (as it says in the bible) have to do with leting us make choices??

Infact creating our souls evil, MAKES us make bad choices. religious people make no sense.

  • @babyturtlefilms

god created wicked evil hearts? it says human not god, what we tryin to say is you can choose and decide what you want and not blamin god for every bad things that human do,Thus God created the soul with the ability to do evil or do good. God ordained or predestined that our souls must make choices to do evil or do good, he created the soul to have freedom, our soul are evenly balanced in creating good and evil

  • @babyturtlefilms

The Bible never states that God created evil souls,Souls which speak uniquely to humans were created for a perfect relationship with God, but they were also created with the ability to chose,Evil is not of God nor was it created by God, evil was and is allowed by God because he gave humanity free will. Evil was brought into the world by man's choice not by an act of God.

  • @faisalmemanghomo if you believe in the bible then god created evil.

according to your good book.. before god there was nothing, how can evil come from nothing?

god created lucifer, and because god knows everything before it happens he knew before he created lucifer that he would become the devil. therefore god created evil. simple logic.

Im really curious how you rationalize why god created evil.

  • @babyturtlefilms

God does not do or approve of evil, god indicates that people should not complain in view of their sins, evil is not really a created thing.skeptic like to claim that God created evil and cite the Bible to "prove" their point,God decrees times of good things and times of judgment,

God is not the author of evil.God brings disaster on those who continue in hard-hearted rebellion against Him.thats what isaiah tried to say

  • @faisalmemanghomo A read god would not be concerned with bringing "disaster" on his creations. That's not love. That's man-made judgement because men like to feel that other people are going to be punished for hurting them. A real life is lived, where you do good for no other reason than that its the right thing to do....not because you're afraid of your "father" burning you in hell. God is not jealous, angry, vengeful. God is all of us.

  • @dontcindyme

    okay,thanks?

  • @babyturtlefilms G-d create ALL spirits, including Lucifer. Lucifer rebelled and BECAME the son of perdition, AFTER his creation. Before, he was an angel of light, very powerful in his own right. He as cast out from Heaven. He works with legions of spirits (1/3 of the hosts of heaven) who are responsible for influencing evil including all the killings of both animal and human life and all the anti-G-d stuff you see in the world. That has occurred for generations. He's the god of THIS world.

  • @armchairjudge ok. so you will spell out Lucifer, but you only spell God with a G-d, which actually stands for Goddamn.

  • @edwardinkling Oh you mean the TRUE Christianity that raged through Norway slaughtering people, committing genocide to strip their Nordic culture away, (among many other atrocities committed in the name of "The Church")?

You all believe in a ghost story. Have fun with that.

  • @edwardinkling If you by "true Christianity" are referring to the most bloody religion in world history. A religion that is directly responsible for more than 13 million deaths - Something which continues to this day in many regions of the world!

There is nothing true or kind about such a hypocritical religion and that otherwise intelligent people actually succumb to a fictional character based on a book written by random humans, is just mindblowing! Good luck with that!

  • @edwardinkling "True Christianity"? That's an interesting concept..

  • @edwardinkling If you could reason with religious people, there would be no religious people. - Albert Einstein

  • @edwardinkling You obviously sound very convinced about your beliefs - no fault with that. But not everyone occupies your space. Better yet, no one 'has' to. The movie is not just another caricature of Christianity designed to draw attention away from what you suppose is the 'true' one. The movie is about the messiness of being human, the sacredness of doubt, the paradox of a faith that claims to save us by imprisoning the 'other', and the foolishness of either/or, true/false divisions.

  • Norbert Leo Butz in a movie. I'm a happy human.

  • jeez its a movie you haters on religons chill

  • i actually saw this and it shows a completely unbiased account of religion and spirituality. all three people in my party(3 different religious backgrounds and beliefs) commented on how nice it was that it didn't appear to have an agenda. terrific and very powerful.

  • I was in this!

  • I read this: "Higher Ground a new film that "depicts the landscape of a tight-knit spiritual community thrown off-kilter when one of their own begins to question her faith."

  • Q: Is it the sweet actor from "Me and you and everyone you know"?? :)

  • next religious sh*()

  • @CargoWinch you don't have to watch it, you know ;) btw I'm an atheist but films are just films.

  • @evamarimo The film is actually critical of religion from what I understand. How this religion treats women as second class.

  • Logic is human nature, our instinct, and science is observation based on logic. Faith, on the other hand, has no place in science; it's not about observation. Faith is about choosing to put your trust in something emotionally.

I'm not taking sides with this. I merely wish to share my belief. Whether there is, or isn't, a higher power, whatever form it be in, I do not, and will not, claim to know. After all, who can?

Hopefully, Higher Ground sheds respectable light on this touchy subject matter.

  • This actually looks really quite interesting, indie movie with a budget!

Definitely give this a go if it comes out at a cinema near me.

  • @dobba92 Atheist tend to think hell is a life spent in fear and superstition, so I think it would be more accurate to say we want to lead you into earthly salvation.

  • @11sinthia LOLOLO!

  • @dobba92 yeeeeeeeiiiiii the hell is so fun right now :D! you know with all that drunk people like Winehouse and cobain singing :D!!!

  • @dobba92 because is abotu something that don't exist

  • does anyone know if boyd holbrook sings in this movie?

  • This movie goes waaaaaaaaay deep, I hope the world is ready for it. If it is, I suspect this movie will receive top honors. Another movie comes to mind when dealing with the rigid and skewed ideas of "religious" people . . . The Apostle. Duvall was robbed.

  • A fine film, yes!

  • Check out the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, most critics love it. The IMDB rating is skewed because they weight the negative scores. If you click on the number of users who have rated it, you can see the demographic breakdown which makes it clear that most folks love it. This film handles the delicate topic of faith and doubt very well, but such subject matter is bound to rub a few people the wrong way. Those are the naysayers.

  • @dobba92 make that 21 dislikes

  • AWESOME Love this movie

    Watch it

  • Faith is what connect a person to the Higher Power.

Doubt is the engine that propel us to explore scientific endeavors and the shield that protects us from evil disguised as good.

  • @MannyHMo science isn't evil, but the theories that lead us away from the truth. God is the greatest scientist of them all.

  • NORBERT LEO BUTZ!!!!!!

  • It seems good, but really confusing....

  • this looks very enticing for my pleasure! sundance always has cool films.

  • luv Vera Farmiga

  • Vera looks like Kristin Whig

  • I love Vera, so I'll watch it!

  • This film is so good. I saw in LA. at a film fest. Very sincere. Probably would do some good for Christians to watch a movie that looks at faith (without dismissing it) in a way other than blind acceptance.

This is the reality-based CHRISTIAN community's response to The Passion of The Christ. This film is for the "good" Christians, the ones able to handle a world full of shades of gray. Pat Robertson types should see it too but they probably won't cuz they're scared of any doubt.

  • Looks preachy and boring.

  • name of the music?

  • 28217, I don't feel comfortable spoiling the film. What I would say is that this film doesn't try to provide answers. It poses the questions that all god seekers have. It respects the audience and encourages us to take away from it what we will, based on our own experiences.

  • @candyhotzoo Just ANSWER the question: ARE YOU OR HAVE YOU EVER BEEN A COMMUNIST??

  • @dkthg Lmao wtf?

  • @watermelonygoodness Sorry, i thought this was the McCarthy trials of the early 50s. I'll shut up now.

  • I had the pleasure of seeing this movie at Sundance. It is a beautiful film. The actors are all wonderfully nuanced, it impressively spans three decades, and it is very respectful to the believers it portrays. While the film uses the lens of Christianity, it discusses universal feelings of faith and doubt, the desire for intimate relationships with friends & family, and the need to self-actualize. This film should be embraced by both Christians and Non-Christians. Start the conversation!

  • @candyhotzoo Does it end with her keeping her faith or giving it up? Please message me the answer

  • Vera Farmiga is the most attractive woman in Hollywood ;) (which makes this a automatic viewing from me)
