Same here. I put in one game, and it stopped reading disks. Luckily I found a video on You Tube that showed me how to fix it. Just message me and I'll put a video out there.
@rudebois61 when i had GTA SA on PS2 i only had it about a week it broke! froze when going out of safehouses
1 time i replaced it with the GTA VC disk while SA was running and surprisingly GTA SA played for a good 5 mins before the PS2 realised it was Vice City XD

just fixed mine as mine was crunching noises, this is just a suggestion as it fixed mine, take all the screws out of the bottom and carefully take top off, next unscrew the drive cover to reveal the laser, blow some of the dust away and then get a clean cotton bud and rub the laser, also carefully clean the rest of the playstation thats revealed, put drive cover back on screw it (i didnt screw all the way) pop a disk in and see if it loads, it certainetly stopped my crunching and it loads now

Hmm sounds like the kill switch in Apple's not-so-marvelous Iphone, except it seems to have killed every PS2 on the face of the earth. The disc drive tried to slaughter me, it friggin shot open and so I fixed it by messing with the restraints on the drive, then it welded itself shut, damn it!
is yours the slimline ? cause if so same thing happened to fine one of the prong`s in the lid is broken meaning it isnt pushing the sensor down inside the console

my ps1(that i got at goodwill w/ 5 games 2 controllers n 3 mem cards for $1.75) has the same(sounding problem, i think its in the mother board you may need to buy a new 1(but i dont really know so dont buy a new one on my behalf)

it could just be your lazer is abit dusty but it sounds like your Glides/Rods need adjusting. (these are the things the lazer slides back and forth on) dont try this yourself, do some searching around for someone with experience befor you open your PS2.
