What this means is that the NBA is getting paid every time the games, commercials, etc play on TV (including re-runs) because the nba owns their likeness. The players are just asking for their fair share of that. NBA gets hefty fees from the commercials that run during the game. It's only fair that they get paid. Still, they offered to give between 5-7% back, hundreds of millions of dollars. Stern wanted more.

The owners invest millions sometimes billions into the team and they deserve to make money. What do the player invest? Nothing but time they get millions to sit down on some bench.
