its ok but you changed the rhythm and they style of the song i understand making it it your own BUT never at the expense of the music..... try again listen to lauryn Hill first to get a good idea of the music ....
@choose2sing Well thank you for your honesty but I'm gonna be honest too! I love Lauryn Hill's version with all of my heart so singing it like her wouldn't do it justice, because she owns that version. Out of respect I sung my version to her, this was sung five years ago so going back to listen to it and giving it another go is not something I'm interested in doing at this moment. Like I said, I LOVE Lauryn Hill, I know her version by heart. Have a great day! :)
@Zirks well i didn't mean to hurt your feelings! but if you were not all on defense you would have red my comment with an open mind, look im not telling you to sing it like lauryn hill because that would be way to much to ask of you and your right you wouldn't do it justice im just saying you should never change a song so much that it hardly sounds like the original i study opera and jazz @ WSU and one thing that always stays true is that you should always stay true to the style of the music
I think you guys sound great. I was inspired to try and learn the song myself but I had problems finding a good guitar tab online. It sounds like John is playing the roots of the chords along with the other filler material. I was wondering where he found that tab, or if he just figured it out himself and if so what exactly is he doing.
This is a fantastic version. One of my favourite songs, and this is just wonderful. You sound like you are enjoying singing the song... this really is a wonderful interpretation... original is an ode to God, yours sounds like an ole to a loved person... maybe something to play at my wedding!
I think she did a great job. It's not abt sounding like Lauryn (who is amazing) it's abt making it yours which she did. Greatly interpreted and her voice complimented the acoustic guitar so well. She made the song really sweet and tender, almost innocent. I loved it. My props to the guitarrist. awesome!
Personally, no one can do this song better than Lauryn. Maybe Patti LaBelle, but she's just insanly raw. There's no soul in your voice, I'm sorry. It's not a cultural thing, but it doesn't sound right. Plus, the drum adds a lot to the song.
agreed that no one can sing this better than Lauryn Hill! I wouldn't even begin to think that. As for no soul...comments like that are not nice and should be kept to oneself! :)
Its funny this person seems to think that Lauryn makes this song what it is and then brings up the importance of the "drums" which, in a sense add an important quality to the song, but at the same time provide one of the most simple accompaniments to an already very simple song. Lauryn makes the song because of her talent and the level of intimacy she brings to the song. You do exactly the same. It's important to experience criticism but not groundless criticism.
:) I know he used a clamp to make the sounds higher, he did look up tabs, however I think he just improvised when we starting singing together. He has an amazing ear. You can ask him, go through myspace and type in wailingdog...I think that should work. If not you can go through mine, zdeliciosa and find him :)
You DO have soul. I hear it in your voice. You don't have to sing like you're in "the church" to have "soul", it's universal -- do your thang. Lauryn would smile at this I'm sure. :-) peace and love
