@thekeifernet One CAN actually see, @ 0:45 and 2:51, that it is in fact Ray Weston on drums. Even with your eyes closed! lol. He has a very distinctive sound. I was lucky enough to have worked on this tour, and the one b4 it...or after it...i can't quite recall! And Martin's fluffed note @2:04? He did that most nights! This band and line-up was my first ever work as on-stage monitor engineer in my younger days, and i will always love them! Cosmic! (Jazz!) haha
@thetmanfitness dude! it's just occurred to me that we must have met! if u went to Japan, then u would have been on the dates leading up to it? and u were also setting up Ray's kit too, as well as guitar tech? yeah, i was doing the on-stage mix. john was years b4 me. i remember feeling strange whilst setting up at The Marquee, and then we realised that the smoke machine (on stand-by) was puffing out with a mix of amyl from a rave the night b4! ahh, happy days!
There are better vids/versions of this song posted and IMHO I do think that despite not "seeing him" behind the kit it is indeed Steve Upton on the drums at this point in time.
clips a bit grainy ( but great) looks like the original line up to me; Strange affair album was the last album of 3 that the original line up did when they reformed around 88 ish; Nouvea Calls ( the no speak album) Here to Hear ( which is terrific) and then this, They split again during this tour I think, which is a shame; I saw this done in Tameside Manchester, fantastic., and saw the here to hear tour also; Briliant band, one of the best; thanks for loading this; class!!
@Isleofskye ;Hi; just had to watch it again to check! You could be right, I can barely see the drummer on the vid . Its Andy/Ted and Martin in fine form for sure and I think that Steve may well have split again by the time of the Strange Affair tour, after they all did Here to Hear/Nouveau etc; Great track, shame its a bit obscure to the masses. Ive had some great nights watching these since the 1st album in 1970, and catch Andy,s band whenever I can still. ( Martin 's rarely on around here)
That's Ray Weston on drums, and this was '90 or '91. I wasn't on this gig because one sound guy (me!) and one lighting guy had to be dropped from the tour for the Japanese gigs due to funds. Did two years on-stage monitor mix for them and my boss did f.o.h. Enjoyed every minute of it!
Stage sound guy around this time was John from Devon, that you? I remember at this show some guys from takamine came along and just gave Andy a brand new electro acoustic!
He worked for Steve Norris about a year or so before me! (John was tall, long blonde hair?! lol) Well remembered. Nope. Not John, but i know of him. Correct about Devon!
Yeah, i love this particular performance here, although the vid quality is naff. Chose to post a comment on this one because, for me, it captures the excitement of 'the opening song' as it was for my few yrs. I think the encore would be 'Blowin' Free'. AH! This wld have been my 1st ever tour! No wonder i ❤ it!
@WeAmLove nice one. this was my last tour as guitar tec having worked for them from when the original line up went back on the road in about 88. steve norris was with us in japan, good tour but short. john dixon(?), top guy, set his head on fire once doing a unicycling fire breathing act! what was the name of the other sound guy who worked for steve? did you know tony the lighting guy they often used?

Thought I knew most Ash stuff but this was new for me. Liked it too... Hey Terry & Dave from Donny in the 70's - are you still into twin lead guitars?

Wishbone Ash is one of, if not the most, favorite of my favorite bands. Great guitars, drums, singing, lyrics, everything. These cats rock!

Hi M8! There is no way that drummer is Steve Upton, the original drummer and one of the greatest drummers in Rock History.:)
