When I was a 16 year-old kid in 1974, I bought this album over the strenuous objections of my mom, who thought the cover was obscene. My friends all thought I was nuts listening to it, just like the other stuff I was listening to. I never had a single friend for decades who listened to anything like it. How times have changed.
@myway43 Miles used half a dozen or so guitar players during the Fusion years. Most of the relevant wikipedia articles have full personnel listings so I won't reproduce them here. On this particular track it's John Mclaughlin.
Miles loves kicking Wynton Marsalis' punk ass, even from the grave. Go ahead, Cool Papa Miles, keep on kickin' Wynton Marsalis punk ass! Stomp on it, Cool Papa Miles. MILES!!!!!!!!!!!
@Bravo6Whiskey I love Miles but Wynton Marsalis is also a great trumpeter. I would think Miles would have admired another talented musician. I know & agree with you. There is only one Miles.
One of my favorite tracks of this part of Miles career. Loved the panning on my Advents in the 70's sitting up in my room after school ! Some of the best drumming ever in my book, love JM's use of the wah on his guitar. Great album sound overall. The tape loop stuff later in the tune is simply awesome with them soloing against themselves.
The drum panning is fine but if I listen to this on headphones, the guitar solo gives me a headache. Too much flying around from ear to ear to keep track of it. On a stereo system it sounds uber though
Mclaughlin playing amazing side guitar line, miles' solo is very inspired (superb) and Dejohnette beats simply is 30 years ahead...real big fun...a bit heavy on the use of panning to my taste!
The real FAIL was music critics at the time of the albums release. Unbelievably, this fantastic album was generally dismissed by critics as subpar at the time of release.

@seerskater I agree and especially with great expectations.

I think Teo Marcero is the one who did all the panning shit. How ill is Jack D's drumming though?

I'm a guitar player and love John's playing to death always, but I have to admit it's the drums that really put this tune over the top.

@SurvivedApp The real 'fail' is that artists these days don't have the guts to put out music that pushes the envelope.

@TaipeiDawg right I feel the same way, I would love to see any band just come out with a new sound
