I got ticket month ago. I decide fill out complain and request a interpreter for court. On court day there no interpreter and they decide released me and no ticket heh! Interpreter cost more than ticket, so they might feel not worth get interp!

I'm really totally agreed with this lady on video. I've thru almost the same thing but I wanted to fight for this lousy interpeter services related to court cases. My last interpeter for the traffic court was very lousy and not even a cerfiated why???? How did this person get into the interpeter agency??

Your moms friend should have been advocating for a certified interpreter to show up immediately or recommend they completely cancel the charges based on the fact that the interpreter didnt show up, and the amount of trouble and embarrassment your mom faced from the cops ignorance. If anything like that happens to anyone reading this... complain to the ITP!-they have an obligation to take some kind of action.

Hi, so I know this comment is probably a bit late to benefit anyone directly involved, but wanted to make a suggestion. Did you consider complaining to the cop's interpreting program? I am in an ITP, and I see many clear violations of RID/NAD's code of professional conduct on the part of the friend cop. As you mentioned, conflicting roles, and I can think of some other violations too. My program takes disciplinary action against students who take on these kinds of interpreting situations.

The court system is real bad. Needs to be fixed ASAP ! ! I am deaf meself since birth. I have pulled over for speeding. Yes, I got some tickets and warnings. The troopers or Sheriffs or city cops always asked me if I can read their lips. I always shook my head slowly. They they would write. I notice the highway patrol troopers are very good to work out with deaf drivers. WRITE THE STORY IN YOUR NEWSPAPER, I BET YOU THAT THE CITY WILL WAKE UP ! ! !

when i went to washington state court over 2 years ago.. i requested for interpreter and they never got one but i showed up court 2 times.. i'm like that's bull.. i showed up for 2 time and i talked to my lawyer and he told me that i dont have to be there because it's dropped so i got stuck there without interpreter..

Hello there. I am deaf female that wears cochlear implant and am trying out to become an police officer as well. All state law is different what your mother did wrong was speeding. $300 fine for 4 mph more than speed limit is silly to be honest with u that way to much for that amount of speeding limit. In new mexico law police officer who knows ASL is not allowed to intptpered for any deaf or hard of heaing in court they can get in trouble for that. I dont know about your state.

Someone above mentioned this, but it's really important to insist that only certified interpreters may interpret for you in situations where one is required.

Try to use alternate methods, but if the situation requires an interpreter, make sure they're certified (which, by default, means they're neutral).

It seems like they decided to be like mafia to make quick money. Cops, judges and other are sometimes like that at Chicago. Maybe they pick ppl whom they think are stupid? I had a lawyer lying through teeth to our judge to save her face. I tried to tell the judge, but my interpreter violate his own rule by refusing to interpret those particular words. After leaving court, I observed them seems like they were close friends. Who knows!

lol what a strong blog! nice... BUT... the cop blatantly refused to write back and forth with your mother?? I doubt... I have never had problems with hearing people when it comes to writing back and forth... I guess it has a lot to do with attitude. If you approach a situation, already subconsciously deciding that hearing people won't communicate w us, it most likely will happen.

On the other hand- because your mother was very strong and argumentative- she did get the fee greatly reduced.

I feel bad for your mom. I would do the same as what your mom did. I would call the court to make sure they provide the interpreter ahead of time. The justice system is so powerful and sometimes unfair.  If it is only a few hundred dollars, I would better off to get over with it and make sure I file the complaint against the poor service at the court and the unprofessional behavior cop.

In my state, we have interpreter licensure. It is against the law for someone to interpret without a license. The licensure board is 1/2 deaf and 1/2 hearing (interpreters) and is responsible for licensing interpreters and has a grievance process. Licensure has made a big difference in the state. For example, the 'cop/interpreter' in your situation would be breaking the law. --Maybe look at requiring interpreter licensure in NV...?
