  • Fucking awesome world cup! Too bad I'll have to wait till maybe 2026 for the US to have another shot at hosting the world cup....I'll be 33 by then :( lol that Qatar WC doesn't make sense at all but oh well FIFA and it's crooks must have lots of money invested in that middle eastern oil ;) haha

  • Best World Cup ever... so beautifully layed out

  • I thought it was an excellent world cup. Worst world cup for me was south Africa 2010

  • Worst world cup I have seen. 1986 was the best, loved 1990 as well, just cos of England's performance and Gazza

  • @markgbullen Crap stadiums huh? Rose Bowl - 103,000, Pontiac Silverdome, 73,000, RFK Stadium, Cotton Bowl, Giants Stadium, the largest average attendance of all time in immense NFL / NCAA stadia. Research these before posting another comment like that as you make yourself look a proper twat!

  • @DJgaZman Big =/= good. USA'94 was a well-organised and executed tournament; but it just seemed too...detached from the source material, i.e. what was happening on the field. Not the worst World Cup, but not the best either.

  • Shit world cup, no atmosphere around the matches, crap stadiums, real lack of quality all round, with no real shining stars like the previous world cup. started with a shit penalty, ended with a shit penalty.

  • @markgbullen No shining stars? Roberto Baggio single handedly lit up the finals in the US, and it was somehow ironic he would miss a decisive penalty in the final. Cracking World Cup, far better than 2010's absolute farce, and will also be better than the debacle that will be Qatar.

  • @R3B0RNPR0PH3T Did he light it up? He and Italy played much more exciting football at Italia 90.

  • You realize, this is a decade and a half before people started making their own YouTube credits with Dallas' music and the cast of Doctor Who, Star Trek, or The A-Team. Good on you, BBC.

Oh, and the Americans know what a big deal the World Cup is -- judging by the foul mood after the selection of Qatar for 2022.

  • Timely too, seeing as the Dallas season finale had aired a little over a year earlier. Of course, disapproval over the Qatar selection was more over it not making any sense-how is a country that hot and that small going to host a successful World Cup? Brace yourself, soccer fans; 2022 is going to be the biggest debacle in the history of FIFA sanctioned matches. The organization is going to lose all credibility they have, assuming they have any.

  • jasus jimmy ya have sum chin on yah

  • Cool Intro love it!

  • Excellent!

  • my first world cup, i was only 3 during the 1990 but 1994 i remember almost every game, still is my favourite world cup for some reason

  • amazing opening intro, but the best thing about this clip is how much jimmy hill fucking loves it when des lynham says that he and jr are 'the same thing' he loves it!

  • Nice one! I remember this as the best intro ever to a football match. My dad and I were cracking up!

  • Whoever posted this, you're a legend!

  • What a bassline!

  • lol i remeber seeing this and i said to my mate " ok their gona show an episode of dallas, better than eastender".......the bbc had so much imagination then lololol

  • fucking hell!!! look at hansen!!! looks 'brand new' as marty mcfly would say..

  • Ever thought that Bergkamp looks like Ivan Draco from Rocky IV?

  • Peter Offer is the announcer at the start.

  • What an amazing city Dallas is though.

  • lol dalmatian puppy on crack

  • FUCK,cant believe the state on Alan Hanson ; how has time gone so quick ? Hes an old grey goose now !

  • I can actually remember this - was a sat night game ha

  • yeah, i remember the first half being boring so my brother kept flipping over to ITV in the second half to watch the Saturday night movie. (What was it?) Every time we flipped back, we missed a goal. Except for Branco's winning free-kick though!

  • No idea as my dad had a houseful of mates over for the game. Remember everyone in knots laughing when Bebeto, Romario and Mazinho introduced the world to the rock the baby celebration when Bebeto made it 2-0 :)

    Good times

  • Karate kid!!

  • can you post the World Cup '98 intro from July 12th 1998 please.

  • can you post the end of USA '94 showing the montage of clips of that tournament please.

  • lol des lynam, what a money grabing cock!

  • How?

  • leaving bbc for more money, even though the bbc had more coverage

  • So what if he got more money. same job more money. i wouldnt say no. ur obviously jelous

  • im not jealous i was being sarcastic, did you notice the lol in my comment...

  • If someone offered you the opportunity to do the same job for more money, wouldn't you go?

  • i repeat again, i was being sarcastic, it was a joke, i dont actually have anything agianst des lynam

  • I liked USA 94. The Dianna Ross blooper, Jack Charlton going mental, Maradonna scoring an incredible goal whilst coked up to the eyeballs, Americans not really knowing how big a deal the whole thing was, Roberto Baggio missing the penalty in the final after being arguably the best player in the tournament, it was never dull.

  • Used to love that BBC sport jingle!

  • whats it called?

  • The music? It's "America" from West Side Story

  • Note to BBC: What a contrast between this shite and the amazing, emotional and passionate start to the 1990 world cup programmes!

In four years we go from Pavarotti to a what sounds like a dalmation puppy on crack!

  • LOL

  • Aye, but they were back on form with Pavane for '98.

  • The BBC tend to only go for a classical/operatic theme for tournaments staged in (western) Europe. The music never seems to be picked because it 'sets the tension', but more to simply reflect the culture of the host country. Note the differences also between 1998/2006 and 2002.

I don't know enough of South African music to know what to expect in 2010, but I doubt it'll be much like Nessun Dorma. Expect a lively samba theme in 2014.

  • Leonard Bernstein from West Side Story

  • back when fottball was just simply lame

  • may have been george gershwin

  • Anyway, "we're off to Dallas".

  • @frank87it Yeah Jerry Jones wanted the 2022 final game real bad

  • 3-2 Brazil if I remember, Branca winner if not mistaken

  • Claudio Ibrahim Vaz Leal 'Branco' you mean..? I was a buff with the ole stats in 1994. Call me 'statto'..or maybe not. :p

  • the bbc always do major events great if only they put together good packages for most of the year

  • worst world cup along with 1990, Brazil were awful and were lucky that the rest were weak.

  • I thought in terms of organisation that 94 was the best world cup but it wasn't a great tourenment. It was one of the worst Brazil sides in their glorious history, so defensive, so negative. I remember the BBC Dallas opening, it's very well done. It's strange though, football or soccer will never take off in the States, I can't remember there being much interest in the competion inside the country and that was during the biggest event on earth but I was only 11 at the time so maybe I am wrong.

  • At the time no but now football is played by more american kids than any sport. The problem is when they get to college age the US colleges encourge them to take up other sports. I was 10 at time(11 in nov 94)and stayed up late to watch the matches.

  • I was 10 at the time too, 11 in dec 94. I remember my parents getting pissed off with Italy's last min goals.

  • Without doubt the worst World Cup EVER!!! Who decided that staging the tournament in a country that wanted the games split into quaters so they could have more adverts was a good idea must need their heads read. Italy 90 for me all the way. This is not because England aren't there as I am Welsh.

  • You gotta like the Dallas twist though. Well, at least those that remember watching the TV show from back in the 80s should. Also, didn't know Hansen was in the studio back then too! And Rijkaard still playing...how could I forget! Ultimately, what the Yanks lacked in terms of footie, they added with confetti :-P

  • hey swcoast. Neveer meant any offence. the dallas twist was good. Loving the Euros at the mo. Torres, Villa comon Spain. begood.

  • Nah, no offence taken. I'm from the UK actually, just iked their perspective though. Spain are playing as we speak. I reckon they deserve to beat the Italians on display alone, but seeing that all runners-up have made it to the semi-finals...who knows! Euro 2008 has had sooo many late goals: awesome!

  • You kidding me? 90 was without a doubt the dullest World Cup of all time.

  • different folks different strokes. For me it was magic. Ireland and England were fantasic. Gasgonie(sorry about the spelling) tears. Lineker, Waddle, Walker, Shilton, Pearce. Germany semi-final.

Cameron lite up the tournament. I was fourteen. I would run home from school to watch every game. Have food then get ready for the next game. And then of course there Pavoritto. For me the best world cup ever. If only England could takes pens. And I am welsh.x

  • Don't you mean the World Cup in 1990?

This is 1994. England didn't qualify and Cameroon were shite!

  • i know this is 94. i also know england didn't qualify. my stateement is there because someone commented that they thought italia 90 was shite. I thought i was brill. Also Cameron made the 1/4 finals.. Shite. How old were you then??? they were fantastic. They also beat the world champions in the opening game. check your history.

  • I was talking about 1994 as that's what I thought you were talking about.

Cameroon were shite in '94, they were robbed in 1990.

  • Yeah Italia 90 was a bit special in terms in drama. Gazz and Lineker! England had more hunger imo, a few misfortunes aside cd have gone all the way..the same for Cameroon, who lost a game they should have wrapped up vs England. thought we were out and cdn't bear to watch Makanaky and Milla mauling our defenders with their superior skill.

  • Just have very special memories of 90. England seemed to really care back then. I'm a welshman but loved that england team. Cheers boss. Begood.x

  • dullest mate, this still has the highest Attendance to any world cup since or before with over 3,587,538 (68,991 per match) watching that matches

nearly 3.6 million people watching matches in America alone

Anyway "We're off to Dallas Now"

  • des "the racist" lynam!

  • Explain?

  • Oops sorry there mate I forgot it was Ron Atkinson who's a racist.

My apologies to the Great Des.

  • To be honest, I didn't know either way. I didn't beleive you meant Des Lynam, but even Ron Atkinson, seriously? What did he say? He always seemed ok.

  • Search for it on google, Im sure something will come up.

He basically was doing commentary on a chelsea game, and after the match he accidentally left his microphone on, and was heard on-air calling Marcel Desially a "lazy n****r".

    Search it up.

  • Woah, seriously, that's not good! Thanks for getting back to me btw.

  • No probs mate.

  • This is what got me into football in the first place, great stuff. Great World Cup too!

  • Nobody captures the essence of sport quite like the BBC. Always superb coverage.

  • good video

  • Best WC ever. Superb video.

  • Defo.

  • fucking great!
