The video response above seemed to be of a different song.
I don't know for sure that the tune I know is Stevens' original, but it is the tune I've always heard in recordings, at song circles, jams, concerts, etc.
FWIW, James Stevens' original lyric was "a 6-foot-7 waitress," not "a 40-year-old waitress," but nearly everyone sings the latter today. So maybe the tune, like the lyrics, has undergone a good bit of "folk process."
When I checked it, it was the same song. I love the tall waitress idea, it fits in with the song. Maybe I'll sing it that way the next time I do the song in public. Thanks again.
It is the same song. The tune Raymond uses, though similar, is modified quite a bit in places, plus the original tune is in 3/4 time. The common tune is a basic 1-4-5 progression too, while Raymond uses a more complex chord pattern. Raymond's version is more complex. I do like it, a lot.
You can hear the original tune really well here ( and I like the cartoon a lot too):
That song is really neat. My Dad has been telling me about this song for atleast 20 years. I'm 33 now, and he's 63. He was a kid when it came out, and he's been looking for this song ever since. Thank you for sharing this simple masterpiece.
Well, I'm partial to the original tune and timing, but your adaptation sounds pretty good too.

Just curious, how to I find the original tune? I actually thought this was it. Thanks for the encouragement.

Actually, Raymond's version may be closer to "the original". Check it out by clicking on the Video Response above.
