@AStevenson hats off on your comment you are 100% correct they are both Icon's and both deserve a standing ovation for there interpertation. And people all over the world have a choice to enjoy two very talented women in the music industry.
They both did very great singing this song. I was a fan of the song when Whitney Houston sang the song and I didn't know that Dolly Parton was the original singer untill yesterday when they were doing a Whitney Houston special on 20/20 last night. I think that Whitney did a little better sing the song.
Omg maaaan seriously comparing her to Whitney???? Dolly wins cuz with her creativity with writing this song Whitney wouldn't been soo legendary. Yeah Whitney have other hits but nothing of her own EVVEEEEEEEER CAME THIS CLOSE TO I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU!!! People don't even recognize Whitney has been singing a cover song!!! but still Whitney version show vocal Dynamics but regardless it wouldn't exist if Dolly didn't exist!!!!
Jeanhaggard49@yahoo.comI think Dolly is a very BLESSED person with such a great gift from GOD I look up to her, cause she didn't get on the drugs most preformers do. She is the best by far. Beatiful lady, keep on singing Dolly we all love you here in TN, Thank you for building us another Fun place to go in Nashville, can't wait until it's finished. GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS DOLLY.

@thedivaskidd everyone know Dolly wrote and sang the song before Whitney, I'm a huge Dolly fan as well as Whitney fan, I think both Dolly's and Whitney's versions are great, you should have asked what I meant instead of ASSuming you know what I meant..... huge Dolly and Whitney fan here don't get it twisted sweety
@JohnFranklin2020 I understood what you meant then and I understand what you mean now. I'm just saying I don't think Dolly was sitting there wishing Carrie was Whitney. Country is country, honey. No true-blue country star would sit there wishing they were with a popstar (with chords like Whitney's that outshine the song) singing a country song. The whole "ASSuming" thing was a nice and very cute touch, but I believe it was you who got me twisted. ;) You're funny...
@thedivaskidd but I wasn't asking anyone what they thought Dolly was thinking, I posted a comment, you felt the need to respond so I guess you were offended by it, it is what is, I said what I said, I won't be taking it back........like i said before don't get it twisted sweety
@JohnFranklin2020 Oh, dear sweet baby Jesus. You are nuts! I was NOT offended. Were I offended, I would have said so. I just did not agree. I agree that Whitney's version is awesome---I've sang it numerous times. I just appreciated Dolly's version as well and really didn't think Dolly was wishing Carrie was Whitney. You have some serious issues you need to work out with yourself because OBVIOUSLY your simple mind is twisted. I'm done talking with you. I don't waste my time.
@JohnFranklin2020 Unfortunately, for you, I don't consider setting things straight a waste of my time. I must assume you are a child, because adult conversations don't normally include name-calling or countless misunderstandings on ONE end. Whoever you are, I respect your audacity. Dolly has written so many wonderful songs and this is truly one of her best. I don't care who sings it as long as it is sung with heart. With Whitney's passing, it likely will always be associated with her and that's just fine by me and Dolly probably has no problem with that.
Such simplicity in the melody is what makes Dolly's version beautiful. Powerful emotion in her vocals is what makes Whitney's version just as beautiful.
I think Dolly was very gracious and actually sang quite a bit of background to let Carrie take some of the lead. They harmonized well together. Clearly Dolly is very confident with herself. She knows what she has accomplished in her life.
I thank God for Dolly & her ability to write & sing such lovely songs
I hate the fact that so many people thing that Whitney Houston wrote this... I mean Whitney Houston is amazing singing this.. But Dolly Parton doesn't get much credit for it.
Over-vocalized? Ha! I sense jealousy because Dolly "blow-up doll, cilicone" Parton couldn't do it like that. And Carrie COULD NOT kill Whitney's version! You know how many people try that song? No one EVERRRR gets it right. Lmao.
i really respect how carrie just sang along and didnt try to out sing dolly, carrie has the potential to blow this song outta the water, but she didnt she let dolly have her song and just rlly enjoyed singing with her. if carrie were singing this by herself she would kill whitney's version. love both carrie and dolly it was a beautiful duet. and i agree if u think carrie cant sing go listen to her duet with vince gill where they sang how great thou art
@direfranchement Wow, I feel enlightened now. NOT. It's just a word. And for me Whitney's version is the absolute best. I like Dolly's version and I was never quick to claim such until I started reading hater comments.
Actually it is a word that you used carelessly and apparently without an understanding of its meaning. Be responsible for the language that you use and be aware of the meaning of what you write and say. So you prefer Whitney's version---that's fine. How futile to come onto a video of Dolly and Carrie Underwood performing the song and declare "Whitney's version is the ABSOLUTE best"!
@direfranchement No one uses the English language perfectly so you've some job ahead of you. Who doesn't know what absolute means? Are you even serious? I think you are crazy to get so wrapped up about a word. At this point I guess it's all a matter of opinion and for me Whitney's version is the "ABSOLUTE" best if YOU know what that means so there should've been no argument. But again, I only said it because I'm tired of ppl dissing Whitney for simply covering the song. GOODBYE.
Well, since you're from my home state and you're so young, I'll cut you some slack. Nobody loves old school Whitney more than I do, but I don't see the need to pit Whitney's and Dolly's versions against one another because they're so radically different. Both are great---Whitney's is grand and anthemic. Dolly's is intimate and tender. It's like comparing Dionne and Aretha on "I Say a Little Prayer". Two very different yet equally unforgettable versions of a classic song.
@bflandragon90: I know this is the original and I know Dolly wrote the song. But this is not the point. This performance is awful, because neither Dolly nor Carrie hit the notes. That's what I said. They can do it much better ;-)
@ladyfender i dont think you see where im getting at. its to respect dolly because this is how it was meant to be performed, not how whitney does it. yes carrie has the vocal capabilities to sing it like whitney but she didnt out of respect for a country legend.
@AStevenson91 Are you crazy, both can hit the high notes and they did. Carrie has got vocal power to hit the high note and so does Dolly without a problem. I don't know what you are listening and yes, I am being perfectly honest.
i love it carrie so hot dolly sohot great performance dolly does it great but carrie did great job what a performance im cooling down they are both so fine wow
I like both versions but I grew up with Dolly and love her version so much more. Dolly is not only a good singer but she has a awesome personality! She has been doing thing for how many years? And she has not lost it! She is my inspiration as a person and a singer. More person than singer cuz I am not a good singer! lol And Carrie kinda reminds me of a younger version of Dolly. She is gonna go far!
I'm an aspiring country music from a small town in Missouri. If you get the chance head over to my page for some country covers and my original "Country Side of Town." Tweet me @ JohnDavidMeyer and I'll be sure to tweet back! I really appreciate feedback.
Ms. Dolly is so feminine yet her voice can be just as high and strong as any singer who has sung this song. The power of her singing comes from her deep emotion, not from loudness. I can listen to her any time.
@tregibbs If you think Carrie Underwood is an amateur, then you obviously haven't heard her sing "How Great Thou Art" with Vince Gill!! Amazing is the only word to describe it... go listen to it :)
this was beautiful the way they sang together. Dolly had said that Carries voice is just pure talent, and as Carrie says Dolly is country music treasure. if you guys only knew who Dolly wrote this song for and why, it makes it even more special. Carrie is the best female singer hands down!!!
@tregibbs The amateur you're referring to is Carrie Underwood undoubtedly one of the best voices in the music industry. She hasn't been around for 40 years yet but she's well on her way to becoming a legend. Do your research!
@SkyscrapersForgiveMC Yes - I'm aware that's Carrie Underwood. I was being sarcastic. If you think that Carrie Underwood is "undoubtedly one of the best voices in the music industry" then you need to listen to a lot more music. Her voice is weak.
@tregibbs carrie underwoods voice is anything but weak... youre psycho.. shes one of the top country vocalists out there.. she'll go down in history with martina mcbride and faith hill as one of the best
@sukisilas Carrie Underwood is a manufactured product of American Idol. She cannot hold a friggin' candle to the greats - like Dolly, Alison Krauss, Shania Twain, etc. Deal with it.
@tregibbs yea alison krauss???? shania twain??? carrie can outsing them easily. i prefer her over dolly but im not saying shes better than any of them. to me, strong female country singers within the last decade are faith hill and martina mcbride. like i said i think carrie could easily be put in that category. shes a product of american idol like kelly clarkson, jennifer hudson, and katharine mcphee. nothings wrong with that.
they both did great i love both of them but vocal carrie doesnt come close to dolly the only country singer that is at dollys level is reba not trying to compare them because they are all good singers carrie this is on of the best renditions of the song i have herd
Few years ago two parents went out to dinner. A few house later the babysitter was calling to see if she could cover up the clown statue in the kid's room, the father said"Get the kids out of the house, we'll call the police we don't have a clown statue"."the clown statue" was actually a killer that escaped from jail.if you don't post this on 10 videos tonight the clown will be in your bed at 3:00 am with a chainsaw in his hand. sorry don't want this to happen to me
I want to see Jackie Evancho sing this song with Dolly I believe there is no doubt in Jackie's vocals I believe Jackie is the only one that can put as much feeling into this song as Dolly and maybe linda rondstat
the last couple days all they have been talking bout is whitneys i will always love u but weres dollys regconition

God bless!

Ms. Dolly is so feminine yet her voice can be just as high and strong as any singer who has sung this song. The power of her singing comes from her deep emotion, not from loudness. I can listen to her any time.
jeijeich 2 months ago 3
Dolly's version will always beat out Whitney's.

@tregibbs If you think Carrie Underwood is an amateur, then you obviously haven't heard her sing "How Great Thou Art" with Vince Gill!! Amazing is the only word to describe it... go listen to it :)

Two truly classy and beautiful ladies, inside and out!!
tconst17 2 months ago 3
this was beautiful the way they sang together. Dolly had said that Carries voice is just pure talent, and as Carrie says Dolly is country music treasure. if you guys only knew who Dolly wrote this song for and why, it makes it even more special. Carrie is the best female singer hands down!!!
julierichful 2 months ago
WTF is Dolly Parton doing with that amateur???? WEAK !!!!
tregibbs 2 months ago
@tregibbs The amateur you're referring to is Carrie Underwood undoubtedly one of the best voices in the music industry. She hasn't been around for 40 years yet but she's well on her way to becoming a legend. Do your research!
SkyscrapersForgiveMC 2 months ago
@SkyscrapersForgiveMC Yes - I'm aware that's Carrie Underwood. I was being sarcastic. If you think that Carrie Underwood is "undoubtedly one of the best voices in the music industry" then you need to listen to a lot more music. Her voice is weak.
tregibbs 2 months ago
@tregibbs carrie underwoods voice is anything but weak... youre psycho.. shes one of the top country vocalists out there.. she'll go down in history with martina mcbride and faith hill as one of the best
sukisilas 2 weeks ago 2
@sukisilas Carrie Underwood is a manufactured product of American Idol. She cannot hold a friggin' candle to the greats - like Dolly, Alison Krauss, Shania Twain, etc. Deal with it.
tregibbs 2 weeks ago
@tregibbs Carrie has held her own just fine. She`s no Dolly but I would say she in one of todays best.
lovessteventyler 2 weeks ago
@tregibbs Shania Twain? Greats? You're out of your mind. You have to do more than talk through songs to be considered a great singer.
holyfuckjustsignmeup 1 week ago
@tregibbs yea alison krauss???? shania twain??? carrie can outsing them easily. i prefer her over dolly but im not saying shes better than any of them. to me, strong female country singers within the last decade are faith hill and martina mcbride. like i said i think carrie could easily be put in that category. shes a product of american idol like kelly clarkson, jennifer hudson, and katharine mcphee. nothings wrong with that.
sukisilas 1 week ago
@sukisilas stfu!!! you think her better then alison krauss?????? hell to the no!!

That is soo beautiful those to sing like angels when they are together
JESUSlover12682 3 months ago
As usual, Dolly underplays it -- because she could blow away anyone else.
It's nice to have a superstar so firmly rooted in reality. Dolly can make anyone look good -- (even if they are good already, like Carrie).
