I wish that Tom, or Ted, would be invited to an event like the Singularity Summit. The depth and impact of their message needs to be heard by a larger audience, and I know that is slowly happening but I think the time has come for the Big TOE to be discussed in larger forums.
Ted's mention of OCD depresses me a bit. I don't have OCD as popularly known (i.e. I don't have the "classic" compulsions of repeated hand-washing). A lot of what I struggle with is purely obsessional. After hearing what Ted said around 55:45, I fear I have a glitch and won't be able to turn off the noise of my thoughts.
@michelle0225 If its the reapting of the same thoughts and answers, over and over again, as Ted points to, I have had the same happening a lot during my life, but I am able to turn it off now most of the time. But it took practice, practice in meditation on silence, though also accepting that the noise may still be there, but I would not give it any attention, just let it do what it did in its own space. I think acceptance maybe is key to the problem you may have.
U say u have obsessional tendencies w/o compulsive repetitive behavior?? - Then u might wanna check out (or, look-up) Obsessive Compulisive Personality Disorder or OCPD.. Its slightly different than classic OCD, the main difference being a general lack of repetitive behavior. (If remember correctly?)
I dunno, jst a suggestion. Diagnosis of this wont 'help' you, necessarily.. But may put question 2 rest & ease your mind. - Cuz knowing is half the battle! :)
Ted, my cyber friend! Sooooo good to see you! I'm sending you so much love and light and an energetic hug of appreciation. I hope you are well. Love, Erica :)
The experience is remarkable in that it includes the illusion of separation from the body but space and distance in that spate is not actual even though it appears to be so. As all of you know, even waking experience is modelled by the mind. Furthermore, anything you believe in has the potential to manifest as reality there, so, if you want to see your idea of a "wider reality" than you will. Why? Because it is in your mind. Mr Campbell is very clever in his usage of words + pseudoscience!
Hi! I have been an avid OOBE and lucid dream explorer for years now and I am going to demystify the whole thing for a certain person here who is enamoured with a concocted fantasy by a modern New Age cult who clearly uses peer pressure tactics in order to control the sheep (seriously, check out the TOE site and you will see what I mean). The only thing any of you will discover by trying out OOBE-inducing techniques is that the phenomenon is nothing but a wake-initiated lucid dream (WILD).
p.s. I'm laughing as I realize I never even watched more than a couple of minutes of this Vollers clip. Partly because I found him tough to listen to, but mostly due to this comment silliness! I honestly mean no disrespect to ewoch, or anyone. I just like trying to understand people's motivations, kind of a hobby of mine.
BTW, I do agree with ewoch that TC uses a kind of circular reasoning to justify his beliefs. It's just that, in my book, nobody HAS TO justify their beliefs.
Don't know why I'm even trying, but here goes. (NOT replying directly, as I don't want to give ewoch the satisfaction of a ping in his inbox)
All Campbell is doing (like any other author) is sharing his ideas with others. Those that can take something useful from it do, those that don't don't. If TC is a "madman with a bloated ego," it should be easy to ignore him. Think for a second, why would you waste any time discrediting the views of somebody you've already deemed "mad?"
@stvbrsn Oh my goodness! Ya hardly EVR get to read 'sane' stuff on these comment boards.. Its surprising, & refreshing! Thanks.. You jst helped to give my faith in humanity a nudge in the positive direction! :)
To repeat: if we have or don't have OBEs ourselves doesn't matter. TC's lemma for who is competent to asses his theory is completely ad hoc and out of touch with scientific standards. He provides no non-circular reasons, but he dresses it nicely in his "trust the scientist" rhetorics, so uneducated new agers fall for his doctrines.
I wrote something misleading. I meant Johnson doesn't provide weird conditions, contrary to what TC does. TC doesn't accept criticism. Either you experience OBEs or you don't. Don't reject his theory if you don't, and if you do, join his ranks. We can admit OBEs, but reject his account of it's nature. Why would TC reject the possibility of alternative accounts just because they contradict his?
What if meditation can create OBE's as psychologists have documented? I mean, come on, there is so much that undermines TC's "evidence", and if you follow his procedure and experience something vague which is interpreted as an OBE, then what? You travelled through time and space or your bodymap got confused for a moment? Which one is more probable in the light of everything we take ourselves to know?
@Ewochable USP # 4,151,431 ....USP # 4,877,983...and USP # 5,402,021.........Now since you said that there is no documentation....eat your fucking words. Man up and admit that you are a troll.....senseless blabber
@kylextown24 I didn't mean that he didn't patent a mechanism, I am saying that it violates no rules. He uses an old theoretical invention, the possibility of which is backed by what we know of magnetism. How come you're all so hostile? If one criticises logical positivism, structuralism or the like, people defend the position or point towards your mistakes. Oh, I forgot, TC formulated his "be sceptical, come try it out", which he stole from L.R.Hubbard, and is a proven effective defense for cult
@Ewochable I gave you just enough rope to hang yourself..You said "I am saying that it violates no rules. He uses an old theoretical invention, the possibility of which is backed by what we know of magnetism" Actually, there is nothing theoritical about a magnetic motor. It exist..and you said that this invention does not violate any rules of physics.WRONG.....It violates the "Law of Conservation of Energy"......I don't expect you to respond....u have been obviously proven wrong AGAIN!!!
@kylextown24 No, it dosen't necessarily violate any rules. And even if it does, so what? I wouldn't have a problem accepting it. So stop using red herrings. It is hardly analogous to Campbells claims. And the evidence for the magnetic machine is public, and easy to perform controlled studies on. And the author doesn't provide ad hoc conditions for what kind of criticism he accepts (he accepts none!). Go publish a paper on OBEs and get it in a peer review mag.
@Ewochable Yes....it does violate a rule of physics "The Law of Conservation of Energy"....so quit saying that it doesn't....you just make yourself look stupid by saying that it doesn't when it obviously does.....
@Ewochable So science is final now? Has it finally understood all the mysteries? Tell me where the energy in vacuum comes from? What made the big bang start? How is gravity described in Quantum Physics? Can anything move faster than light? You seem to know about science, so answer me those simple questions
@kylextown24 Get a troll to admit he's a troll? LOL. Just scroll down the history of this thread. That's what I did, and this kid has got a bug up his ass. I think it's hilarious he is accusing a person whose whole message is about self-empowerment of being a cult leader. Accusing a professional physicist who is offering an interesting paradigm (which in my reading falls outside the aegis of "science") of pseudoscience. BTW he's scandinavian, so he should have his "troll" technique down pat ;D
Wow, this ewochable character is persistent. I especially like where he illogically equates TC's idea of openminded skepticism to TC's desire to sell books. I guess he's not aware that all three books are available for free on google. There is nothing to prove or disprove. If you do not agree with the theory, then reject it and move on.
@stvbrsn No, I can't just "move on" when pseudoscientists are polluting public opinion. TC is a selfcentered new age-horsefuck. His "scepticism" is a sweeping counterargument against criticism. He disqualifies everything but subjective experience, and negative subjective evidense means you didn't try. That means his methods rely on primitve confirmation - a tell tale sign of pseudoscience. It is intellectually dirty tricks.
@Ewochable Yes, actually you can move on, but there is apparently something stopping you. I'm not going to insult you by trying to guess what it is. Nor do I care. But, I think your "polluting public opinion" remark is rather telling. And rather hilarious. Are you the one who is going to singlehandedly set the record straight? Just with TC, or with everybody whose ideas you don't share? Self-appointed arbiter of TRUTH?
@Ewochable FWIW, I only just came across Campbell's lectures recently. However, I had pretty much concluded much of the same from my 43 years of experience on this planet. Long before I ever heard of him, I knew intuitively that the only interaction we have with "reality" is through the filter of the human nervous system. And that extra dimensions (beyond 3 or 4) had to exist, they consist of probabilities and these intangible dimensions are what GENERATE our "reality"
@Ewochable ewochable just wants us to give him the attention that his mother never gave him.........such a sad sad little boy. I think what he really wants is a big 'ol warm hug. Just know that we all love you Ewoch, as you are a part of the ultimate consciousness system, even though you don't know it yet. I believe that you will eventually find the truth in time, we have already planted the seed, maybe someone else will water it and you will realize your original greatness. Until then......
@kylextown24 Well, I would love to hear an account of consciousness that allows for TC's move. First, everything points towards physicalism or some kind of supervenience account of consciousness. The contester is certain to block TC-style conscious universes, since it attacks physicalism on the grounds of consciousness' alleged unity. TC is just a madman with a bloated ego.
