Okay, now i've commented on too many videos on the excellence of jazz drummers, so fuck that now. People need to stop saying there's always something wrong with fucking metal players. Jesus christ in their own music they are the gods?! And yes a dare say it, Buddy Rich and Weckl would stomp them to the ground at jazz/funk. In their music. But metal players like Tomas Haake would screw Weckl in metal. The clean-ness and precision with which he uses in his drumming IS excellence.
this drummer has more MUSIC in him than any other stupid metal drummer like joey jordison or whoever... they only know to kick the bass and hit the snares alot to make noise... THIS IS MUUUUSIC!
Not many people know this, but DW actually takes little catnaps during his solos while he's playing. He learned this technique when he was in the marines.
Why are you all saying its not a solo? from 0:22 to 1:00 is a solo ??? Its just got stabs in it, and the band is still playing. It doesn't have to be drums alone.. Does a guitarist solo alone??
Not that its a big deal, I just don't like people who call other people idiots when really they don't know shit themselves! :P
this drumming is so fucking hard and it is a very respected style. you those who like rock and metal, and are drummers you'll only be a good drummer when you can be a master at both worlds. and trust me when i say being an accomplished metal drummer is not that achieving at all. well maybe to only those drum noobs so double bass and blast beats with all that speed make people drop their jaws when its actually simple stuff sped up
I agree with you on this being very hard, but you're being just as judgemental as the people liking the metal drummers you say aren't achieving anything. I agree that a lot of metal drummers are overrated, but you seem ignorant against the ones that aren't too. Also, sure, blast beats and double bass is "simple stuff sped up", but that doesn't make it any easier than this. I can't play this, but I can play metal stuff. Why? Because that's what I have practiced. It's all about what you work on.
hmmm, but in metal, its all about how good your double bass control and blast beat or your speed. moving around the kit, 16 note rolls and stuff. i am able to do fast double bass and all, blast beats.. but u know what, i couldn't even do simple drum stuff. i had to go back to my basics. i'm saying there are alot of metal drummers who have speed but actually their skill isn't good.
And I agree with you. But that's the style that they know and love. Nothing wrong with that. I agree with you about a lot of metal drummers being like that, but that doesn't mean ALL of them are like that. They have mastered their style, just as Weckl has mastered his. That's all there is to it.
@blight4hire Okay, now i've commented on too many videos on the excellence of jazz drummers, so fuck that now. People need to stop saying there's always something wrong with fucking metal players. Jesus christ in their own music they are the gods?! And yes a dare say it, Buddy Rich and Weckl would stomp them to the ground at jazz/funk. In their music. @Turtlesrossum yes very true! well if you could convince the majority of pple to think that metal drumming isn't noisy and irritating then i'd say that your statement could be really make an impact on the majority but sadly to them constant double bass patterns and all are noisy. we live in a sad close minded world!
@blight4hire I really can't stress how much respect i have for jazz drummers and how much i love them! Weckl is me favourite drummer out of anyone in the world! It just bugs me when people can't take a second to even appreciate the clarity and amazing talent metal drummers have.
@blight4hire and that should be "allowed" as "fine", if thats what they want to play. the general notion in western culture across the board (music, etc) is that you must develop around distinct, proper models to be "authentic" - otherwise youre "faking" something and getting away with a crime. fuck that shit. the artist defines where they take it in an anarchic sense. if they feel they want to take on the "proper" model, so be it, but they should be embraced for what they do, also.
Oh no, you did not offend me, you should be sorry just for your point of view, it reflects clearly that you have still pretty long way from noise to the music.
101rockdrummer (read: cocksucker), if that what you said was said by Max Roach for instance, some 35 years ago and about some primitive noise, often called rock nowadays, then you would be a drummer too, maybe.

What is this?... latin crap... Nobody here in youtube even knows what this music is about. He is just playing along a "cuban"? rythm without not knowing wtf that is.... he is doing stuff with the double pedal, which doesn't even fit with a really simple and quiet latin song, thinking that i am gonna think: Oh look what technical i am!!!
Totally crap what he is doing, and everybody could do it, it's no one's death...
Speak for yourself, mate....If you don't know what this type of music this is then you're not really a drummer or musician, period. You shouldn't be on this page.

You're a grabastic piece of amphibian shit. Your opinion has been rendered moot, simply by the fact that your understanding of Latin music is far less than nil. Latin drumming is often quite complex and busy; This music is not even quiet. Latin drummers technically supposed to be imitating the very large Latin bands of way back in the day, meaning that one drummer is supposed to play the role of say, a drummer and three to five percussionists.
Yes you could be this good. Its all about how much time you want to put into it. Weckl put in A LOT of time practicing. I'm not just talking about a couple hours a day either.
Morgan Agren plays nutty experimental jazz but is amazing at metal heh(sol niger within). check him out! I say dave about 8 years ago at a clinic at he's pretty nutty himself too. super nice guy
WOW. Ladies and gentlemen... David Weckl. What an inspiration to all of us. Seriosuly though he is tighter then a ducks arsehole. And thats watertight.
Show me one of those clowns that can play this well and this clean......oh wait non of them can.....and other than cannibal corpse, no I've not heard any of the others, ya know why?................oh yeah. I LISTEN TO REAL MUSIC. Not a bunch of douche bags that just got out of prison.
if ure not a drummer yourself, u have no say in what he or she can do or not do because u simple have no frame of reference to what's well played and difficult and what's not...there are many drummers who can't tell either...!
don't drive yourselvs crazy. the trick is not to think too much. if you try too hard, you blow it! Of course, you must already have the basic skills, right?! Yea...duh.
...........yeah and deathmetal takes two weeks to learn. LMAO! And what's the point with Weckl and Gadd? I don't know, they are only two of many of the greatest drummers in the world and not to many others are better than them.
2 weeks to learn deathmetal?? you have obviously never heard of gojira, meshuggah, decapitated, necrophagist fuck even cannible corpse, and it takes more than 2 weeks to get as fast as george kollias or any of the afore mentioned bands so blow me metal isnt easy
u mean it's more complex to play death metal?......you are just wanting to get some angry replies but nobody cares that you're dumb enough to say that
If people have no arguments they come up with such things as to criticise the english style from others--i know that my english style is very bad--i had only 4 years english lessons and my last is about 40 years ago--but i do understand a lot more of music than you--and when you think that your drummer is as good as Weckl you`re just an idiot!!! No more to say--You`re live in your own little world!!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!You really believe yourself what you`re saying??? There`s no help for you!!! A silly stupid boy always will stay a silly stupid---there helps no medicine!!!
can anyone tell me how i get to the video of the piece called "cultural concurrence" ? I know it must somewhere on internet as i remember seeing it one time oneline.

I would love to see anyone who says this guy isn't that great play a drum set like that. It may not be one of those "hard core crazy screamo solo breakdowns", but when a drum set has over 10 instruments it's hard to play them all perfectly.
mofonzio you have absolutely no idea about drumming do you... Dave Weckl is arguably the best or one of the best drums of all time. How could you compare this to chip rittler...hes not even in this mans league in terms of drumming. Drum tricks are a gimmick...

plus most metaal drummers could not handle the kind of timing and rhythms drummers like dave weckl use. I could even go out on a limb here and say...even Mike Portnoy couldnt handle these beats.
i dont know about the jazz vs metal drummer thing. i think jazz drumming involves far more musicianship whereas metal drumming is more about speed and being impressive.
there is always a bit of conflict between metal and jazz drummers...because evry metal drummer knows that jazz drummers are the best, and to become a good drummer u need jazz. but i understand with pple prefering metal..and i listen to more metal/hardcore stuff then jazz but wen i hear things like that it still blows me away how flawless the technique and just evrything about it.which is wat i love bout drumming
This is a Very good drummer... but I prefer Metal Drummers... Extreme metal drummers, like Hellhammer (Mayhem), Derek Roddy (Nile, Hate Eternal), Joey Jordison (it's a good drummer...), Flou Mounier (Cryptopsy), Igor Cavalera (Sepultura).
Jazz drummers are good, but I really prefer Metal Drummers
It is nice to see all the positive comments here about this Video. I have never seen anything like this and I would challange any living drummer to play this well and with such great technique and taste. No wonder why he is the number one drum call.
Part 2: Forget all the other issues about your personal taste. If you look at what they can do on the kit and how they emote while they play and fit the music and you were fortunate enough to see and hear them play live you will know what I am talking about. Also I had the good fortune to know Gene Krupa and some other greats and they would have had nothing but positive kudos for Mr Weckl I am sure.
Part 1: I think Dave Weckl has taken the next step in drumming after Buddy Rich. Many people like to Dave down also because of his brilliant technical development but as I used to hear about Buddy all the time meaning he was simply a technician. Anyone who has been fortunate enough to hear these two drummers play live will attest to the fact that their performances are inspired and unique.

The truth is that the drummers who rule are those who play both metal and jazz.

there is always a bit of conflict between metal and jazz drummers...because evry metal drummer knows that jazz drummers are the best, and to become a good drummer u need jazz. but i understand with pple prefering metal..and i listen to more metal/hardcore stuff then jazz but wen i hear things like that it still blows me away how flawless the technique and just evrything about it.which is wat i love bout drumming

Doesn't most metal spawn from a blues/jazz background? I've heard that before, but I'll agree. Metal drummers rule all-around.
