regardless this was an incredible race. funny to see championship races now. no one wants to lead. lingering paces with essentially a half mile sprint to determine a winner. here they fight over the lead and the pace. real running
Wasn't this the race where, after this event, Gerry Lindgren donned his famous "Stop Pre" T-Shirt emblazoned on a Stop Sgn? They then encircled the track together arm-in-arm.
@ktymrk no the stop pre shirt was at olym trials in 72. pre dismantles the field and runs 13.22.8 5k. george young is about 7sec behind and 3rd place guy is about 19 sec behind. go preeeeeeeee!
Thank you Jin for this, I do believe you and I ran against each other at the 2000 California State meet in the 1600m, I hope all is well for you, Erik Webb
He obviously has far more charisma than any other American distance runner, with our best meet named after him.
In terms of times and national titles, he's a strong candidate. The thing he's lacking is real international success, i.e. of Frank Shorter's marathon gold. Nonwithstanding, I do believe Pre is the standard for American distance runners, until someone takes his place.
Well, someone has to break the dominance sometime... The thing is, to Americans, running is a hobby. To Africans, running is their way of life, i.e. their method of transportation.
@YiftertheShifter1 its beyond charisma. hes probably the dictionary definition. lol! pre in 1973 in a dual meet against WSU ran a 3 mile in 13 05 and beat john nino tough kenyan runner then 1 hour later went and ran 3 56 mile and won both races by big margin. never saves himself just trys to stick u every time. greatest dual meet double in history some say. what a competitor! because of international politics he didnt get race best at a lot meets in 73,74, and 75.
@VirenKickedPresAss Man why are you on like every video that involves Steve Prefontaine?? You just talk about how bad he sucks for not getting a gold medal in Munich. I'd like to see you get out there in the olympics and try running a thirteen minute 5k. :|
@Absolut1566 No, DUMBASS, just the ones that say he is the GREATEST, when there arew OTHERS that have MEDALS. You're living proof why some mothers eat their young. And where did you get" a thirteen minute 5k"?
@VirenKickedPresAss Oh sure; I'm a dumbass, and you're not because you spend hours of your life on youtube arguing with people who you will never meet and who's opinions you most likely will never change. Who cares if people say he's the greatest? He was and still is an inspiration to runners all over America, and it doesn't take an olympic medal to do that.
That viren dude loves pre! He's on every pre video! Haha

Frank Shorter looks like a girl in this race.

what he was really lacking was the future there were no runners that could go under 13 minutes for 5000 meters

whomever was your favorite, you don't need to explain yourself. that's your business.
if you liked Steve for his style on or off the track, or both, that's wonderful. it's a personal thing, that simple.

waaayyy to much commentary by the guy calling the race. not common either for any sporting event in those days. hmm.

mhm. i dont think anyone is going to be taking his place for a long time with the African runners in the dominant state that they are.
